The latest from Arlington, VA's experimental "black metal 'cause there's nowhere else to put it" troupe Wrnlrd (once more via Flingco Sound System), the "Death Drive" EP was largely formed using outtakes from last year's "Myrmidon" album. That being said, like all other Wrnlrd outings to date, there's evident shape-shifting growth and progression here, and [...]

Wrnlrd - Grave Dowser Wrnlrd's new bit of what the fuck is coming out soon on FSS. Black? Sure. Metal? Mostly. Scratchy drone, static soul, and whatever else the dude wants to throw in? Obviously. It's less than 20 minutes long but Death Drive is a twisted beast that defies logic & explanation aka pure gold. It opens innocently enough with a few tracks of buzzing black guitars, blasting & chugging drums, and inhuman [...]
Myrmidon ( Flingco Sound , 2009) is haunted: not just by phantasmic EVP recordings of gurgled voices, and melodies that twist and float like bilious ectoplasm, but by grief and aggrievement. The song titles are largely associated with life's origins ("Genital," "Girl"), but the album name and much of the music connote destruction. Thrash riffs and throbbing bass give way to moans and stretches of cold quiet. Myrmidon regrows, and is cut down again. - - - What I don't like about a lot of "weirdo" or arty black metal is [...]
Time for some inscrutable black metal from the impossible-to-pronounce Wrnlrd. If you're wondering why you should give a toss about some lo-fi noise rock from a one mand band you've never heard of (and are frankly unlikely to ever heard of again) it's simply this: it's fascinating. Take a chance and listen to Marauder . It's only 82 seconds long, but it somehow manages to evoke a dark folk music, with a melody of extraordinary sadness buried beneath the roar of distorted guitars. Startlingly good stuff. It's taken from Wrnlrd's 2007 album Cperadt [...]
"Myrmidon" is the latest full-length effort from prolific, one-of-a-kind black metal outfit Wrnlrd (once more released by the ever-curious Flingco Sound System), and within seconds it becomes clear that the band's production values are continuing to improve, as this may well be the first time I've ever been able to ...

Pentagon , by one-man band Wrnlrd , is one of the most intriguing packages I've encountered in a while. The translucent papers and gray/silver tones of the CD jewel case suggest IDM. A single eye peers out from behind the back traycard. Lifting the tray reveals the number "21" written twice, as well as the the number "51090942171709440000," which is 21 factorial; the CD has 21 tracks. (Wrnlrd's website has a similar obsession with numbers.) Sun Wheel: Eye of Horns May Day: Dance of Vines [...]

You know when your sink is clogged and you reach down through the bilge water to dig out the obstruction? Cperadt ( Small Sacrifice , 2007) is like that. Its production is absolutely filthy, but in a good way, retaining low end even while its midrange sprouts hairy palms and female moustaches. This is probably the most disgusting description I've ever written about a record. Blood Circle of Soot But the album is enjoyable not in spite of, but because of its dirt. Details [...]
