I should like the artsy indie folk rock of Dirty Projectors right? Clever instrumentation, quirky syncopation, amazing female harmonies, six NICE people on stage who compliment Vancouver's Stanley Park for being so awesome? Yeah, I do. For the most part. "Swing Lo Magellan" is totally Ron Sexsmith, "Made to Love Her" is solid indie rock, "No Intention" is all fine. David Longstreth, you're a good man. AND THAT BIT IN "Beautiful Mother" when Amber, Haley and Olga let rip and go all shrieky operatic and sort of blow everyone's hair back? Yeah, that was awesome. Yet sometimes [...]
A stellar Saturday ahead: ► Dirty Projectors headline the Wiltern behind their new album "Swing Lo Magellan," with Wye Oak opening. ► Nick Waterhouse brings his vintage R&B stylings to the Getty for an installment of the Saturdays Off the 405 series. ► Gladys Knight and Natalie Cole team up for a night of soul at the Greek Theatre. ► Good trio of local indie rockers — A House For Lions , Soft Swells and Warships [...]

I don't know about you, but to me there's something about bedtime during the summer that fills me with divine peace. Maybe it has to do with the fresh air, the light blankets, airy clothing and and overall breezy environment. Does it get any better than that? It can! I've compiled a relaxing and peaceful summer lullaby playlist for you to drift off to. So lay back and relax in whatever way you prefer and allow the music to do the rest. Shhhhhh. 1. [...]

photo by Morgen Schuler From the very first moment they were mentioned in the blogosphere, there has always been plenty of talk about the complexity, technicality, and thematically-singular vision of the music of Dirty Projectors . Critics and journalists ( myself included ) have written thousands of words breaking down bandleader Dave Longstreth's meticulously crafted, nearly-unclassifiable songs, but comparatively little has been said about Dirty Projectors' live show. That should change soon though, as the Dirty Projectors are a stronger live act than ever, presenting Longstreth's songs in a more visceral setting while allowing the [...]

photos by Dave Christensen The Dirty Projectors got an impassioned welcome at The Crystal Ballroom on Wednesday night. As the band readied their instruments with the lights faded down, the Portland crowd would roar in anticipation of their opening notes each time the house music died away, only to start up again. This same roar could be heard later at the beginning of each song when Dave Longstreth and his five band mates finally launched into their hour-long, two encore set. It was the roar of recognition. The roar of rock concert ritual. [...]

photo by Christopher Nelson We hope you've got a little bit of energy left from the Block Party weekend to enjoy some great shows this week. On Monday, there's a highly anticipated show at the Showbox with two amazing bands: Dirty Projectors and Wye Oak . On Wednesday, Big K.R.I.T., Casey Veggies, Big Sant, and Tito Lopez shake things up at Neumos, and Seattle favorites The xx play at Showbox at the Market with Jacques Greene . On Thursday, Pierced Arrows are at Comet Tavern, and Shannon Stephens and [...]

photo by Lauren Slusher Some bands are well known for their improvisation-heavy live performances, but it's unlikely that Dirty Projectors will ever be one of those bands. Bandleader Dave Longstreth has made a name for himself as a notoriously rigid band leader, but while his records are expertly and meticulously crafted, his focus truly pays off during the band's live performances. Not only do they execute pitch-perfect replications of the recorded versions of Longstreth's complex songs, the intensity of their precision results in [...]

♫ "Freedom Hangs Like Heaven" - Iron & Wine "you know I'll do anything you want me to..." ♫ "Troubleman" - Electric Guest "she's got it bad for me..." ♫ "Spiral" - Wye Oak "this is what you wanted..." ♫ "Sweet Life" - Frank Ocean "keepin' it surreal..." ♫ "Cannons" - Youth Lagoon "i have more dreams than you have posters of [...]

The summer months have been alive with exceptional new releases and announcements of big albums dropping in the fall. The hustle and bustle is hard to keep up with, and many artists and their works go unrecognized in the process. To alleviate the invetable blind eye that many of us face, The Friday Four will track albums/songs lost in the melee of busy days of work and play. The prologue begins with Baltimore indie folk duo Wye Oak, while British crew alt-J bats cleanup with a unique but amazingly addictive track that will get your weekend kickin'.

Brooklyn's a weird place. Case in point, prior to Purity Ring's sunny seven p.m. set at New York's Prospect Park last night, those who arrived early were treated to free blankets and ice cream - yeah, exactly. Still, that only bolstered what was essentially a mini festival of a bill: Purity Ring, Wye Oak , and Dirty Projectors . Sure, the three bands might not draw too many parallels musically, but you've got to love those rare times when the ticket price is actually over-justified . Also, what a fucking Tuesday night, right? Montreal's Purity Ring turned some [...]

Swing Lo Magellan is out now on Domino. Thanks to @BQNguyen for holding down the good real estate last night. Wye Oak
