Brooklyn singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten 's 2010 album, Epic , was just that: a critically-lauded affair of earnest folk rock. On February 7th, 2012, Jagjaguwar will release her follow-up, Tramp , which itself is going to be fairly epic thanks to its all-star lineup of indie rock collaborators. Spanning 12 tracks, the album features contributions from Beirut's Zach Condon, Julianna Barwick, Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner, The Walkmen's Matt Barrick, and Doveman's Thomas Bartlett. What's more, The National's Aaron Dresner offered [...]

REMHQ You can't really call it a long goodbye - the announcement last month about the dissolution of R.E.M. was about as abrupt as they come, with no farewell tour or even a final show attached - but shortly thereafter they did announce a final release in the form of the Part Lies Part Heart Part Truth Part Garbage 1982-2011 compilation which is set to come out November 15. And amongst its 40-song, career-spanning tracklist are the final three songs that R.E.M. will release, recorded after the [...]

Earlier this year Wye Oak took part in The A.V. Club's A.V. Undercover series. The live sessions take place in The A.V. Club's studio and it is obligatory that you perform covers chosen from the site's predetermined list. For their part Wye Oak covered The Kinks' "Strangers," for which Jen and Andy drafted in Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg for assistance. This was so well received that they were invited back again another time, and they decided to cover Danzig's "Mother." Both sessions were extremely well liked and well viewed; in fact the last time I saw Wye Oak in London someone [...]

I chased Wye Oak around at SxSW only to be thwarted by flu fatigue and a late cancellation at a day party, but to get to see them play at The Parish more than makes up for it. Add to that, it was my birthday. Add to that, I get to bring my camera to share pics with you. So off to the Parish we went, the Hall in a good mood, but a little tired from the week's shows. Erika Wennerstrom opened with a set of stripped down Heartless Bastards [...]
I caught Wye Oak last night at the Parish in Austin. The band's 2011 release, Civilian remains one of my favorites of the year. Thanks to a request the band returned for a encore to perform their cover of Danzig's "Mother," which first appeared here . Grantland (my new favorite website) premiered the new video from Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks . My Old Kentucky Blog shares a great new video from EMA [...]

Date Friday, October 14th Location The Parish Doors 800p Tickets $12 from Frontgate With the slew of shows piling up in Austin this month, this is one that you definitely don't want to miss out on. Friday, Baltimore duo Wye Oak make their way into town, hoping to reignite the passion for their [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Although established in 2006, Future Islands seem to be a band that haven't really been able to get their footing—be it in what kind of sound they are going for, or in the number of full length albums they have put out. Regardless, after a listen or two, On the Water is the album that changes things for this band; it's a solid synth-pop album with some jams that will have you either bobbing your head to [...]

Frank Yang I'm sure they didn't intend to be away for so long - it wasn't their fault that the 2009 edition of the Toronto Islands show for which they were the undercard was cancelled - but as of Friday night's long-awaited show at the Sound Academy., it had been over four years since Explosions In The Sky last played Toronto and you could round up closer to five if you're talking headlining shows. A long time for any active, touring band but an eternity for an act whose fanbase grew [...]

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Chicago back in 2008. I was at my first Lollapalooza and was faced with the choice between Explosions In The Sky on one end of the park and Brand New on the other end. Being the festival amateur that I was at the time, I decided to just stick with my friends and see Brand New even though I knew nothing about them. Long story short, the Brand New frontman stormed off the stage 20 minutes into the set and I later heard from multiple people how mind-blowing [...]
The irregularly touring Explosions in the Sky are certainly enough reason to head to Monday's sold-out First Avenue show, but the Baltimore duo Wye Oak are great reason to show up early. Jenn W
Last week's contest asked you to name your favorite book. This week, I am asking about your favorite album of the year. Over the year my favorite album of 2011 has fluctuated between tUnE-yArDs' w h o k i l l , St. Vincent's Strange Mercy , and Wye Oak's Civilian , but lately it is the Wye Oak disc that has been in rotation the most. To enter this week's contest, leave a comment with the name of the best [...]
Click image to download full album Song: Phantogram - Don't Move "Phantogram - Don't Move" What's so good? Phantogram's latest single "Don't Move" starts out abruptly, much like this review. A bit more than a year ago, the band carved out a strong niche for themselves as rising trip-hop stars (check out our review of Eyelid Movies ). However, with "Don't Move" they appear to be straying into a new territory - something [...]

TONIGHT'S BEST BET: Explosions in the Sky w/ Wye Oak The Tabernacle - 152 Luckie Street in Atlanta 30303 Doors at 8pm / Admission $25 / Purchase Tickets I've never been a huge fan of Explosions in the the Sky's recorded output, so it may seem disingenuous for me to say that tonight's show at the Tabernacle is a must-see-hear event. After all, so many bands before and since EITS got their start have done their "thing" before, exploring the [...]
