Wynonie Harris : Keep on Churnin' ('Til the Butter Comes) [ purchase ] Wynonie Harris recorded what many consider to be the first rock and roll record, "Good Rockin' Tonight." But his true calling card was a string of raunchy, but highly successful post-World War II "race records." Accusing Harris of engaging in double entendre may be generous -- often, that second entendre was barely there. "Keep on Churning ('Til the Butter Comes)," a hit from 1952, is par for the course: "Take the sheep, leave them be, bring the finest brown [...]
I'm feeling like a little rockin blues tonight. Remember Wynonie Harris?

Wynonie Harris born in Omaha, Nebraska, was an American blues shouter and rhythm and blues singer of upbeat songs featuring humorous, with often ribald lyrics. With fifteen Top 10 hits between 1946 and 1952, Harris is generally considered one of rock and roll's forerunners, influencing Elvis Presley among others. OK that's the official line - his voice and the style of records are just as relevant today I think.

Things were fine 'til they took you down, opened you up and passed you around. When the talk turns to drinking songs, Wynonie Harris is a name that can't go unmentioned. Harris was a blues "shouter" who recorded in the 1940s and 1950s. His upbeat jump blues style (which didn't shy away from sex and booze) was an important precurssor to rock and roll. My eyes were opened up to Wynonie through coverage on Big Rock Candy Mountain (a great blog). Here are some of my favorites: Wynonie [...]

By far my favorite show on WRVU is Pete Wilson's Nashville Jumps. It's been a staple of my morning drives for ten years now, and when he took this past summer off, my Friday commute was sorely lacking. The very first time I stumbled onto his show in the fall of 1998, I heard the studio version this song, and I've been hooked ever since (this live take is twice as long, and twice as funny). Louis Prima [...]

In the 1930s, at the height of the big band era, there were (especially black) bands that featured blues singers. This meeting of blues and swing was called "rhythm and blues", and billboard's first R&B charts were for this music. Later this style became known as "jump blues". During and after World War II, two things happened that changed the sound of the blues: one, there was a mass migration of workers to the industrialized northern states, which resulted in acoustic blues players from the south plugging in and creating electric blues; and two, wartime shortages made it [...]
Ike Turner, who died last week, is best remembered as a first class villain. But to paraphrase Shakespeare, I've come to bury Ike, not to praise him. Ike's evil will live long after him, the good interred with his bones. He had an important part in the history of Rock and American popular music he should be remembered for. Before I delve into Ike, first, to better understand his role, here's a quickie history of the development of Rock in popular music. Early forms of Rock have roots in late 19th century with black Gospel artists. The excellent [...]

Wynonie Harris -- All She Wants to Do Is Rock Wynonie Harris arguably invented rock'n'roll by adding a backbeat to rhythm-and-blues (see How Rock Really Began ), but he never really went wild and started rockin' out like Roy Brown, Wild Bill Moore, Big Joe Turner, Bull Moose Jackson, Jimmy Liggins, Big Jay McNeely, Jimmy Preston, Fats Domino, Johnny Otis and the other rock'n'roll pioneers who followed in his wake. What he did do was turn out a series of great jump blues hits while staying in character as Mr. Blues [...]
