I'd like to argue that basement black metal gets a bad rap, but, really, it doesn't. Though the "genre" - mostly consisting of one-man bands of wildly varying musical ability recording almost painfully lo-fi, Burzum-inspired black metal - has its share of visionaries too brilliant/socially retarded to work with others, it is, as you would [...]

I thought finding out you could play Farkle on the Internet sounded the death knell for my ability to accomplish anything. Then today I found a free Java-based website where you can play Settlers of Catan online against people around the world. Needless to say, that revelation - coupled with a hangover from massive drinking exhibiion last night - has left me utterly incapable of focusing on a task any larger than my laptop's monitor. I'm not normally one to find myself in a comatose state following a night of partying. Usually I'm awake and good to go, [...]
Last year, I got way too busy with this thing called life and ignored this other thing called metal. As a result, I missed out on a lot of quality music as was evidenced by my paltry contribution to the year-end MetalSucks Best Of 2009 lists. I am here to rectify the error of my ways, [...]

I just got back from playing with the cutest little black lab puppy I've seen since the day my mom brought home our black lab. This event has jump started my, uh, biological clock - if a dude can even have a biological clock. But instead of an annoying child in my life, I suddenly feel the urge to bring a dog into my world. I would name him either Gangu, like the little pup in Audition , or Xasthur, because well...that would rule. I guess if I wound up with a girl dog I'd name it something like [...]

Hydra Head seems to have plans to release a lot of early recordings and demos next year. First up was a release from Harvey Milk , and now they have announced plans to take Xasthur 's first two demo songs for a February 23rd release called 2005 Demo . The track were previously lost, but now they have been remastered, so get prepared for some lo-fi black metal in the new year. Check out the humorously short track list after the jump. 2005 Demo [...]

… How shall I begin to tell of the deeds wrought by these nefarious men! Alas, the images, which ought to have been adored, were trodden under foot! Alas, the relics of the holy martyrs were thrown into unclean places! Then was seen what one shudders to hear, namely, the divine body and blood of Christ was spilled upon the ground or thrown about. They snatched the precious reliquaries, thrust into their bosoms the ornaments which these contained, and used the broken remnants for pans and drinking cups,-precursors of Anti-Christ, authors and heralds of his nefarious deeds which [...]

The first thing that comes to mind when I hear this black, burbling, gurgling, humming, thrumming, chaotic cloud of barren-wasteland drone is this: Why did so few talk up Pentemple , the live collaboration between Stephen O'Malley/Greg Anderson of Sunn O))) , one-man death army Sin Nanna (Striborg), Oren Ambarchi and Attila Csihar of Mayhem ? For my part I stumbled upon Pentemple like a blundering character in a movie, lots of "whoah"s and "what'sits?" and "awwwww"-ing, but once I found it [...]
christ this is a bit of a creepy record. so in recognition this wordspew is dedicated to the crazed bastard(s) (can there really be more than one of you sick enough to want these jpegs?) searching for hazel blears upskirt pictures… righty. new album , or rather a cd reissue, from scott conners' one man (well [...]
So as I was perusing a downtown HMV last week, I rolled to the end of the aisle labeled "metal" with my nose held high in complete conviction of my superior taste over all this mainstream piss. While asking a bored wage-jockey for an impossible request ("Oh you don't have any Ecstatic Flagocephalation? Figures, this [...]
Above you will find some video of SLAYER in the studio recording their new, not-yet-titled album. Remember that time we interviewed Tom Araya. CHIMAIRA are going all Web 2.0 with their latest video, "Destroy and Dominate" giving fans access to the raw files and holding a video remix contest. All you budding music video directors can [...]

Underground ambient US black metal entity Xasthur has finished putting together the All Reflections Drained LP that has been recorded throughout 2007 and 2008 (with M.H. as guest vocalist), and Hydrahead is now prepared to release the album on May 26th in 2xLP, 2xCD, and even as a cassette tape. As with all Hydrahead releases, the packaging is looking very impressive for the vinyl with cover art from Tim Lehi and photography by Faith Coloccia - the 2xCD is encased in a DVD style digipack and features a second disc of bonus material, [...]
We here at Crustcake love vinyl, and we know you do too. We also love Sludge and Black Metal, and again, we know you sure don't mind 'em either. So when Hydra Head says that Harvey Milk's Life... The Best Game In Town and one-man Black Metal act Xasthur's All Reflections Drained are going to be released as double LPs and you can pre-order them now, naturally we figured you'd like to know (

Before I launch into a giddy hoopla about black metal made in the basement of an exceptionally tall, alienated Californian solo dude who hates blogs, Myspace, organised religion, publicity, humanity, Animal Collective and Christmas, I would like to say...Merriweather Post Pavillion...oh my fucking God...blog soon. I dunno if Xasthur (AKA Malefic) reads blogs, but God help me if he reads this, 'cos he would already hate me. I've mentioned him (publicity), God (twice), Black Metal (Indie fuckwit tries to understand our sacred scene etc), Christmas (Baby Jesus is shit blah de blah), and his physical massiveness (he's a [...]

Alt-country superstar Ryan Adams revealed his love of metal in a recent NY Times piece published this past weekend, in which he shared with writer Winter Miller what's been making the rounds on his playlist lately. "Metal gets a bad rap, that it's just satanic or screaming, but sometimes it's really just pop songs [...]

3 Inches of Blood Some new writing up - at Metal Injection, I have reviews of film buffs/metalcore-rs Killwhitneydead and Relapse retro thrashers Dekapitator . At Stylus, I have a look back at Fugazi's most underrated record, Steady Diet of Nothing , as well as reviews of the Speed Kills...Again compilation on Heavy Artillery, metal-obsessed rapper Necro , falsetto-fueled 3 Inches of Blood , Ministry 's final album (that cover [...]
