O.J. San Felipe of Brooklyn's Golden Triangle , also a former Bay Area guy, is touring for the release of his newest LP with his latest ensemble Xray Eyeballs . Not Nothing is out now on Kanine , and the first single "Egyptian Magician" was premiered by MOKB . It's a much dreamier, New Wave-type sound than the harder garage pop San Felipe does with Golden Triangle. Xray Eyeballs: "Crystal" - Prefix Premiere by prefixmag [...]

San Franciscan-cum-Brooklynite O.J. San Felipe has two bands: Golden Triangle and Xray Eyeballs . Both share a fondness for West coast surf vibes and shoe-scuffing dance parties. But while the former tilts the throttle fully forward, Xray Eyeballs drifts hazily towards a darker party thrown deeper in the back of the garage. Take the new clip for their track “Egyptian Magician” - both song and video recall a smoked-out basement or college dorm. Dim, irregular lighting accents the careless nature of sporadic dancing, and unpretentious good-times abound. The video, directed by Amanda Finn, feels and [...]

Documentaries: Record Store Day 2011 - In this original documentary, created by the Cluster 1 production team, we explore what makes Record Store Day so great, and why people continue to buy vinyl after all these years. High Fidelity 's Rob Gordon would be proud! Premieres: X-Ray Eyeballs – “Egyptian Magician” - Their brand of psychedelic-surf rock complements the visuals perfectly of numerous images of the same thing superimposed over one another. It’s a lot to take in. STRFKR [...]

As seen on My Old Kentucky Blog , here is side one track one off the new Grooms LP, Prom . The album is set to be released via Kanine Records on July 12. Known as purveyors of the LOUDquietLOUD aesthetic, Grooms are mixing glitchy electronic, ambient, and classic pop sounds into the mix here. Listen. Downloadable: Tiger Trees (mp3) You can preorder Prom @ insound.com . Upcoming Show: June 17th @ Knitting Factory ( [...]

Bands don't come from New York now, it has to be Brooklyn. Xray Eyeballs channel girl groups, Link Wray, beach parties, Mo Tucker and the Reid brothers into a soupy, poppy, garage rock melange. Top that off with an excess of mascara, buckets of reverb, Cramps-y horror schlock visuals, a sprinkle of glam rock glitter and you have the constituents for their latest fab waxing, Not Nothing (out now on Kanine Records). A few months back we brought you news of Xray Eyeballs , a project featuring OJ from Golden Triangle , but now there's a new track out there, thanks to MOKB , just before the band's release of their record Not Nothing , which will hit stores net week via Kanine Records . Listening to this track, I definitely am digging the way it trudges along, slowly building towards the eventual musical release. It's a less immediate track than [...]

I read that Xray Eyeballs frontman O.J. San Felipe includes lullabies as some of the inspiration for his music. Sounds kinda weird, but when you sit down and really absorb the themes of "Rock-a-Bye Baby" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider" you realize that whoever wrote those was-if I may be so direct-a little fucked in the head. Xray Eyeballs are a little fucked in the head. Which is why I like them. Not to mention there's something to be said about a band that was noticed for a T-shirt before their music. And they look [...]
It's human nature to recognize patterns and organize like objects into larger, related groups. In music, this behavior leads us (Both critics and fans) to force acts into genres and micro-genres, for not only do we love to organize, we love to forget the past. How else does one explain the need for dub-step when we already had trip-hop? For the Nashville rock duo, JEFF the Brotherhood , any number of genres could do - Rock, punk, garage, psych - but, with a track like "Shredder," one which combines the low-end riffage of Queens of The Stone Age with [...]

You can download any or all of the tracks at your leisure or you can stream all the songs in this mix using the Yahoo media player at the bottom left of the page. Mmmhhmmm, this is one of those reliably excellent rock-your-face-off shows. JTB is supposed to be the "secret guest," but the cat is all the way out of the bag at this point. JEFF has been playing places like Bowery and MHOW lately, so this show is going to be packed, sweaty, and an absurd amount of fun. All of the openers are excellent, as well. If you haven't listened to JEFF's new album, We Are The Champions , you're sorely missing out. It's excellent drum/guitar duo punk rock, but they do it better than anyone else out there right now.
