Here's another old college radio show I uploaded to MixCloud. From February 1989, this is the earliest surviving tape that I have. Unfortunately, I lost lost a lot of tapes when my car got broken into outside the old 9:30 Club in D.C. many years ago. This show features The Stump Wizards, Buzzcocks, Camper Van Beethoven, Half Japanese, The Chills, XTC, Elvis Costello, Iggy and the Stooges, The Divine Horsemen, Giant Sand, Chris McGregor, Tom Waits and others. Today, for those of you not so acutely tuned into the "aging folker-turned-rocker-turned-wh o-knows-what" scene, happens to be Bob Dylan's 72nd birthday. And, while Hibbing, Minnesota's favorite son is sure to receive plenty of well-deserved accolades over the course of this very special day, it's worth remembering the dark undercurrent to Dylan's songwriting legacy. His impressive catalog has, unfortunately, inspired some of the worst covers in musical history. Hey, they can't all be Hendrix, right? Here, then, is a taste of the hell that Bob hath wrought on us all: XTC - [...]

It’s really good to make use of your time and to put all emphasis and I guess that’s passion, all your focus, on right now." Based in London, THE VEILS have been around since 2001. Filed under: News , Exclusive Brassneck PR Andy Partridge's career has to be one of the more circuitous and often ill fated in the history of pop music. At the height of his former band XTC 's commercial powers in the early '80s, the singer-songwriter suffered debilitating stage fright, forcing the band to stop touring altogether. The British trio almost missed its chance at a huge step forward in the college radio/alternative markets here [...]
Mmmm... sacrilicious. The post 10 Sacriliciously Blasphemous Songs appeared first on Treble: Music news, reviews, interviews and more .
Producer Billy Sherwood is substantially finished with the star-flecked Prog Collective 2, which will include some of the final recordings of Peter Banks, the original Yes guitarist who passed earlier this month. The track "Tomorrow Becomes Today" features Banks, keyboardist Larry Fast (Foreigner, Peter Gabriel) and vocalist Sonja Kristina (Curved Air), with Sherwood on bass, rhythm guitar, drums and synthesizers, [...]

Here's your opportunity to appreciate a good cover song and do a good deed at the same time. Sally Crewe And The Sudden Moves recently covered the XTC tune Making Plans For Nigel . The song contains the lyric, "Nigel just needs a helping hand." Why is the name Nigel important? Well, he was a stray kitten rescued by Sally in 2007, and then last year poor Nigel had some rough luck after surviving a couple of accidents. For $1 (or more if you wish), you can download the track. All proceeds will go [...]
The final piece of the jigsaw for Boys Noize's 100th release has now been unveiled: the electric Chemical Brothers remix. There's obviously no need for introductions, only to say the Chems create a remix that is on heavy on the gritty world of old-school rave culture. It's a 7-minute black hole of twisting hooks, glassy drums and relentless energy - there's clearly no sign of the Chems mellowing in their later years, good on them. When I hear Spray Paint sing the refrain to Yawn Factory: "She drives a heavy load in the dark part of the country." This image pops into my head of Large Marge in her big rig describing to Pee Wee the "the worst accident I ever seen". Spray Paint are not the worst accident I ever seen, they are more like a traffic jam. Their spare twin guitar and drum attack pierce you're conscious and create anxiety, stress and general disquiet. Spray Paint can grate on you and grow on you all at once. [...]
To celebrate the 100th release of his Boys Noize Records Imprint, the German techtro maestro Alex Ridha, aka Boys Noize, has lined-up a stellar remixes package with the bosses of the crosses Justice and The Chemical Brothers both remixing 'Ich R U' and 'XTC'. Check out the previews below. Expected release is March 18.

If there's one theme that I can't get enough of in the movies, it's the awkwardness of high school. It's hard enough figuring out who you are without having to deal with the pressures of being sixteen, and this is something that still resonates with me today. Enter Charlie (Played by Logan Lerman) in the 2012 film The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Based on the book of the same name, and written and directed by Stephen Chbosky, The Perks Of Being a Wallflower follows the coming-of-age tale of Charlie. Charlie is a shy [...]

Listen to the console referencing 'XTC' by LIZ , which is released today through Mad Decent imprint Jeffree's. Whilst plenty of artists are currently mining the early 90s for their R&B nuggets, 'XTC' sounds like an unearthed gem. The single is backed with 'Underdogs', which happens to feature RiFF RAFF. Listen to both of them below, or download here .

Alfredo Arias Horas When Amor de Días released their first album Street Of The Love Of Days in Spring of 2011, they weren't presenting themselves as successors to either The Clientele or Pipas , but given that neither of those outfits have released anything new since Alasdair MacLean and Lupe Núñez-Fern&aacut e;ndez turned their attentions to it, it's not unreasonable to expect that the new project provide at least some of the elegant pop fix that fans of either outfit would have demanded from them otherwise. [...]

I have no idea when I became aware that new albums and cassettes didn't simply sprout randomly in the bins and racks of record stores but, rather, arrived on a (theoretically) predetermined date - the street date. As I became a music consumer in the early '80s, this information wasn't at your fingertips and was as much rumor and speculation as actionable intel. At the time, I was frequenting record stores like mall staples like Camelot and Record Bar, cooler chains like Peaches , and a few smaller independent stores like Globe . All [...]
I'm speaking to the Justice League of America. The U S of A, Hey you, Yes you in particular! When it comes to the judgement day and you're standing at the gates with your weaponry, You dead go down on one knee, Clasp your hands in prayer and start quoting me, 'Cos we say... Our father we've managed to contain the epidemic in one place, now, Let's hope they shoot themselves instead of others, Help to civilize the race now. We've trapped the cause of the plague, In the land of the free and the home of the brave. If [...]

When he said it, she put her middle finger in the inner corner of her right eye to soothe that sting that occurs there when you’ve meant to correct but in turn been corrected, when you feel shamed: that needle-thin stab right where your eyeball rounds off and leaves a tiny pink triangle exposed without skin. Other than the navel, it is the most sacred place on the human body. (The most profane being not the genitalia as some Christians and Muslims and Texans would have you believe, but the elbow, that angular bone designed to abet sloth, indecency at [...]

Happy post-Txgiving. Hopefully, you're sated, not-quite stuffed, and well caught up with family and friends whom you want to enjoy good cheer with. Seems like a good enough moment to offer up a tale of adulterous desire in nautical surroundings. I've always loved the image of seagulls taunting the song's poor hesitant sap. This one may be a minor Andy Partridge winner, but it shows just how a level his craft is working on. XTC - Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her, Kiss Her
