Today Timedoor celebrates its one year anniversary. Thanks to all of our readers. It's been a lot of fun. Chaka and I look forward to bringing you another year of mp3's, concert reviews and pics, opinions, trivia, ephemera, flotsam, jetsam, and junk.

it was my second trip to saudi arabia in less than a year. the flight from nyc stopped in jeddah for an hour or so for security reasons, i was told, before making a skip to riyadh. so instead of the vast arabian desert, i got a glimpse of the ethereal blue of the red sea coastline from 39,000 ft up. i've been running hard lately. this trip was hastily planned because my host didn't confirm a date until the very last minute. i was flying in early morning again, and we begun our descent while it [...]

Rockism is dead. Long live rawkism . Sure, it dwells in pockets here and there, like Japanese army holdouts in the Philippine jungle, but when the more hardcore elements among the performing set speak of "authenticity" there's the distinct tang of sour grapes in the air. Someone once said that inside every revolutionary beats the heart of a frustrated civil servant. Given access to a high tech studio and a massive production budget, even the most committed brick tossing rockist ideologue will start making heretical inquiries about overdubs, session musicians, and canned orchestral effects. Even The Clash, [...]

I've still got problems with FileXoom, my file hosting service, this is the 5th day they are down, they estimated 3 days! To add to this, since Saturday I'm having great problems in staying connected for more than five minutes and my connection speed has dropped to a ridiculous 14kbits/s, is this a record Tiscalli or am I being given special treatment? So to say I'm pissed of would be the polite way to express my feelings. So no wonderful text today as I no longer have the energy to battle with my computer, Just a handful of songs from [...]

Enik here, kickin' it in the Pylon this cold cold morning. I'm not the only one. Here's some info from an Associated Press piece I just read: "From Minnesota to New York, some schoolchildren are getting an extra long weekend because of the bitter chill that has spread over the eastern half of the country."

I have about 5500 songs and 50 videos / TV shows/ movies on my 30 GB 5th-generation iPod, which is just about at its gigabyte limit. I've got two options at this point, (1) buy one of the 5.5 generation 80 GB iPods - which would hold more music than my computer hard drive could handle, or (2) start weeding out my collection. Weeding is the cheaper and probably more useful option, especially since I haven't cleaned out my iTunes collection at all in the 3 years since I first purchased an iPod (has it only been that [...]
Welcome to Throwback Thursday v.2 - 1989. Last week I debuted this new weekly feature with music from the year 1975 which I thought was a pretty stellar musical year. 1989 was itself a pretty amazing year. It had its share of great debuts (De La Soul, Neneh Cherry, Lenny Kravitz, Nine Inch Nails, Warrant and Skid Row!, The Stone Roses). 1989 brought us the Daisy Age of Hip-Hop with De La, Queen Latifah and The Jungle Brothers all putting out ground breaking records. Other highlights of 1989: Prince busted out the [...]

XTC, in my opinion, are one of the most undervalued and yet influential bands in British pop history. Why undervalued, you say? Because, well, they're not underrated, and its not as if their influence isnt recognised. It's more the fact that despite their huge influence on the recent post-punk revival, despite their huge run of amazing albums and singles, and despite being (sorry for assuming that most of my audience are British here) ours, they still haven't been rediscovered by younger people in the same way as say, Gang Of Four or their ilk. Maybe it's because they're not as [...]

Well, December is here. Time to drag the Christmas songs down from the attic. Well, I stole the photo, so I guess I should post the damn link... Hooray! It's the first of December! The advent of Advent! The moratorium on things Christmassy has been lifted! Cue engorgement on atrocities like egg nog and fruitcake! Bring on fevered, last-minute shopping for novelty stocking stuffers! Roll out and repeat ad nauseam syrupy-stringed muzak versions of "Winter Wonderland"! Better get me a bucket... Heck, old Snow Miser even dumped a ton of snow on us here in Vancouver to jam it down our throats. [...]

There's no making sense of XTC's recent output, so don't even try. After going on strike against their label for seven years following 1992's Nonsuch , they released two albums in Apple Venus and Wasp Star , albums of demos for those two albums ( Homespun and Homegrown ) and then a box set collecting those four records plus a couple new songs ( Apple Box ). Also released over the past seven years was a career-spanning box set ( Coat Of Many Cupboards ) as well as a series [...]

Andy Partridge released a box set of his Fuzzy Warbles albums in the US last week. All eight of the Fuzzy Warbles discs are included in the Fuzzy Warbles Collector's Album , as is a special bonus disc, Hinges, of outtakes available only with the box set. For someone like me, who has a handful of the import versions of these discs, this collection is a great way to pick up the rest of the collection by one of my favorite songwriters. The winner will receive this marvelously packaged box set, which contains: [...]

It seems a little dumb posting some trumpet inflected pop tunes in the midst of Steve posting Miles Davis but I love a bit of trumpet I do. The trumpet can be a little one-dimensional, all brash and blaring but it can do a lot to lift a song and can be used in lots of ways in pop even if it lacks the subtlety of a Miles or Chet Baker. The June Brides typify the way trumpet is used in a
Zurück aus dem Urlaub. Bevor ich unzählige, neue mp3 durchhöre, gibt es hier ein Lied von XTC , das mir seit meiner Rückreise nicht mehr aus dem Kopf will.
