XYX, the junkyard noise-punk, drum-n-bass duo from Monterrey, Mexico, can be heard live this weekend at Todd P's MtyMx Festival, which is being held in XYX's hometown. The duo consists of Mou, 27,... There's something about a two-person band that forces the members to play fiercer, louder and harder; each member has to work harder to throw in everything possible to fill up the sound. For Mou Ortiz and Anhelo Escalante of XYX, their drums and bass combo, piled on with reverb and delay, has a manic exhilaration that is downright intoxicating. The duo, from Monterrey, Mexico, began playing together two years ago and has a 7-inch, 'Sistema de Terminación Sexual,' available from S-S and Nene Records, which Ortiz and Escalante also help run. Before heading across the border to Austin for [...]

I'm often bewildered that when mention of Monterrey's burgeoning music scene is made, Los Llamaradas seem to nab all the attention but little glory is ever bestowed upon XYX. Perhaps that's soon to change. XYX – Momento Acido Contemporaneo 7" Sharing a love for noise with their oft praised brethren, XYX instead roll this chaotic squeal into a high strung ball of elastic energy. The title track bounces with an underlying reverence to post-punk but threatens to derail any sultry [...]
Maybe it was L'Keg finally turning on the air conditioning, but for me the best part of night was the last band XYX. Hailing from Mexico, the furious bass and drum duo absolutely killed—or they would have killed had it not just been me and maybe 15 people who were watching them. The diminutive drummer Mou worked his set like a pro, playing dynamic beats with incredible fills while singer/bassist Anhelo looped her rapid-fire vocals through a pedal. Her distorted bass lines gave the limited band a surprisingly full sound, which at times was as jazzy as it was punk. [...]

Oh yeah. There's some stunning avant-punk coming out of Mexico at the moment. I'd forgotten this until I had the good luck to hear Microvibraciones by Monterrey-based outfit XYX. It's taken from their Sistema de Terminacion Sexual EP. What you get is some fuzz, some wailing and some COMPLETELY FUCKING EPIC growling synths. It's tripped out beyond all belief. This one is absolutely essential. XYX - Microvibraciones (alternate download)

//photo by jason fisher Monterrey, Mexico has been kicking out some interesting noise-rock these last few years. From the Sonic Youth inspired Los Llamarada to the weird-punk of Ratas del Vaticano , this city and its surrounding area are breeding a hot new crop of bands you should watch for. Bass guitar and drum duo XYX are no exception, in fact after their stunner sets at SXSW (some of my favorite of the whole festival) you might even find them the cream of that crop. XYX [...]
Below you will find a list of some of our suggestions for bands you should check out at this year's South by Southwest music festival in Austin. There's one listed for each letter of the alphabet, along with an MP3 sample and a show listing for when and where to catch each band. (Note: we've listed solo artists under the letter of their FIRST name and bands with "the" in their title as if there were no "the" simply because it looks better this way.) Please leave your own suggestions for bands to see in Austin [...]

S-S continue to bring the best of the Mexican Underground to the U.S. with this 7" from XYX XYX - Sistema de Terminacion Sexual 7" Coming out of the same Monterrey scene as the excellent Los Llamarada, XYX tap the twitchy post-punk with a ferocity that is unmatched by many of their peers in the States and UK. It seems like so much of the bitter edge from post-punk was worn away over the years, its nice [...]
