It wouldn't be Vriday without some vrideos! First up is a video for the opening track of Novosti 's excellent new record Love & Lashes , which will see its release tomorrow night at the Doug Fir, when the band opens for Just People and Violet Isle as part of the Soul'd Out Music Festival. You can read a little bit more about Novosti in this week's paper, but this clip for "Drown" was assembled from 8mm footage that family friends of Jov Novosti compiled over several years. [...]

Hollow Wood, one of the many great Idaho bands at Treefort all photos by Morgen Schuler Boise isn't one of those places where you hop out of bed and say "I think we should go to Boise this weekend!" Actually, I don't think it would have ever been a destination on my list, but then low and behold Treefort Music Festival was born. So many people talked up this fledgling festival last year, I decided it would be worth a shot to check it out for myself. Despite the rave reviews, I wasn't sure [...]

Hey Marseilles celebrate their album release at Easy Street & Showbox this week photo by Christopher Nelson It's the Spring Fundraising Drive on KEXP all this week. What a great way to be a part of the celebration of amazing listener powered music and make a donation to power the music that you love. ( Make a donation at: 206-903-5397 ) Right after you do that, there are plenty of good shows to pick from this week as we finish a short February and move on to March. We start with some hip-hop on [...]

Oh February is the latest by Portland multi-lingual folk band Y La Bamba; it's a six-song EP filled with harmonic female-fronted, male-backed vocals. Intricate as usual, Oh February has high influence from front-woman Luz Elena Mendoza's Latin heritage paired with she and her bandmates' indie-folk background. Opener and title track "Oh February" sets the tone for the EP, but the true standout is "Death on the Road". This song not only maintains a strong, danceable shuffle-beat, it packs in both the proper levels of emotion and catchiness. Here her [...]

I broke the rules this week on my very unoriginally titled radio show on KSVR Mount Vernon. The Indie Music Show featured a few tracks that are, quite distinctly, not even close to being indie. And one of them kicked off the show. It's the new track by David Bowie called "Where Are We Now?" Shortly thereafter, I crossed the ocean for a set from France, where I played a track by famed singer and Masculin Féminin actress Chantal Goya and another by Serge Gainsbourg. Still, there [...]

Before I took over, per the norm, host Chef Stuarto brought me on air to discuss the coming show. He asked if there was a highlight track I wanted to talk about. The discussion centered around the first track I would play that evening - Jacco Gardner's "The Ballad of Little Jane", which I likened to a modern rendition of The Beattles' later-era. You can read more about my thoughts by clicking the link below. But really, one of the most notable, poignant tracks of the playlist is the [...]

Following both their 2010 soul-stirring debut LP Lupon and last year’s critically adored, Steve Berlin produced Court The Storm LP, Portland Oregon’s Y La Bamba now offers up the breathtaking EP Oh February just in time for…well, February. Produced by The Decemberist’s Chris Funk, this six song record feels as rich and loaded as a full-length with its compellingly warped, old-timey radio crackle and pop. Lead singer-songwriter Luzelena Mendoza’s whispery warble verbally [...]

As with last week, this week's lot of new albums offers an impressive collection of fresh releases to keep any music lover busy for the next few days. After more than three years, the popular indie band Local Natives finally dropped the follow-up to their 2009 widely-acclaimed debut record. The new album's lead track, "Breakers," [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

2013 continues to bolt out of the gate with another solid week of new releases. With the long awaited followup to their well-received 2009 debut, Local Natives top our list of must-buys. Hummingbird finds the Silver Lake, Los Angeles, group pushing into new territories of song structure, challenging listeners while still enticing them the same rich harmonies that made them an initial success. Another anticipated followup out this week is the seventh studio album by Canadian twins Tegan & Sara , whose Heartthrob is an well-produced, achingly romantic collection of indie pop. [...]

Portland's Y La Bamba have a new EP, presciently-titled Oh February , which is out today via Tender Loving Empire. The record was produced by The Decemberists' Chis Funk you can stream the whole thing below. If that's not enough new music for you, YLB also just recorded a Daytrotter session . The band, whose most recent visit to NYC was last summer , are currently on tour with popular folkies The Lumineers including their two NYC shows at Terminal 5 this weekend (2/1, 2/1). Those shows are [...]

The last couple of weeks have been been the two best consecutive weeks of new releases (when taken as a group) that I can remember in a long ass time. Well done this week and last week! That is if you don't take into account Justin Bieber acoustic. I prefer by Bieber in all it's electric glory! And finally early favorite for album of the year 2013 Hummingbird from Local Natives. Plus way way more below... Adam Green and Binki Shapiro: Adam Green and Binki Shapiro Amor [...]
New Portland music for a Monday! Let's jump right in. Y La Bamba 's Oh February comes out digitally tomorrow via Tender Loving Empire. Here's the title track from the new EP, which reunites them with producer Chris Funk, who worked with the band on their album Lupon . Y La Bamba is hitting the road for a quick East Coast tour with the Lumineers. LISTEN: Y La Bamba - "Oh February" Tracks from Lost Lander, STRFKR, [...]
Y La Bamba sing about the month that's only a few days away. Y La Bamba have released the song, "Oh February" , from the EP of the same name. Produced by Chris Funk, of the Decemberists , the EP releases on Tuesday, January 29th via Tender [...]

Last year, Portlanders Y La Bamba released Court the Storm . It's combination of Mexican heritage and modern folk led to much success, and they're already back at it again. January 29th will see the release of the group's new Oh February EP , and we've got the newest single available for you guys. I'm attached to the sound of the guitar in this song, but the vocal harmonies and late-entry of the drums don't hurt the song either. If you're into what you hear, [...]

Tender Loving Empire's Y La Bamba is probably one of my favorite bands. It's like wrapping a warm aural blanket around the dusty cobwebs of your tired mind when stumbling out on the porch of a brisk, sunny morning. The Portland band is basically the sound of winter thawing, when life opens its eyes for the first time after a long hibernation. This is a premiere of their new video for "Michoacan" off of their most recent album, Court the Storm . Even better, they just finished recording a new EP called [...]
Portland's Y La Bamba , who released the Steve Berlin-produced Court the Storm (one of our Best Albums of 2012 ), have announced a set of dates supporting the Lumineers in 2013. Also, the band has announced a new digital EP being produced by Chris Funk of [...]

It's day three of my top 50 countdown, meaning we're in the middle and doing #30 down to #21. Par with how the previous two have gone, we begin with a pair of honorary mentions. * * * * * Honorary Mention: Pet The Ghost (73 Single) by Darlings I loved Darlings' self-titled LP from 2009 and their follow up EP, Warma in 2010 was pretty phenomenal as well. My first highly anticipated album of 2013 came when the band gave us [...]
