Idaho may be known more for its spud production than indie music, but that probably won't last for long, thanks to Finn Riggins, the Gem State's latest and greatest export. Y La Bamba are another band to emerge from Portland, OR's thriving scene, with more promise than most. Centred around frontwoman Luezelena Mendoza's incredible soaring and soulful vocals, Y La Bamba make Latin-influenced folk music with a heart. 'Squawk' is a stand-out track from their record 'Court The Storm', and features infectious acoustic guitar and Mendoza's Florence Welch-esque vocals. If you like your folk dramatic and a little unusual, then check out 'Court The Storm', available on Tender Loving Empire . Y La Bamba - Squawk Download audio [...]
Folk newcomers The Lumineers are selling out shows and rocking on stage like they've been around for decades.
Filed under: Monthly Mixtape Flickr March is over. The trees are budding early, the flowers are blooming into a bounty of spring colors, Valdimir Putin is the president of Russia again, Rush Limbaugh called a respectable human being a "slut" and the earth ticks ever closer to the end of times. So what better way to await the arrival of the alien drone destroyers than this kick-ass mixtape. After you buy extra water and batteries, unplug [...]

Portland Oregon's Y La Bamba is currently on tour with Lumineers to support their just released, second full-length LP Court The Storm via Tender Loving Empire . Gorgeously produced by Grammy-winner and Los Lobos member Steve Berlin, Y La Bamba's frontwoman and lyricist Luz Elena Mendoza sounds more beautifully ethereal yet razor-sharp than ever. Reminiscent of a modern-day, Latina-flavored Kate Bush, Mendoza's sound blends the Mexican folk music of her childhood with the dreamy indie-pop [...]

Singer-songwriter Morgan Nagler got her project Whispertown off the ground oh-so-many years ago by rubbing elbows with a couple of other former child actors, Blake Sennett and Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley. And Friday night — on the occasion of her birthday as well as the release of Whispertown's new EP "Parallel" — the bonds that tied Nagler to Rilo Kiley's extended musical family felt like festive ribbons. ||| Photos by Jeff Koga Whispertown's show at the Hotel Cafe [...]

SXSW is pretty intimidating to those that want to trek across the musical Disney Land that is this crazy festival. To an audience member it's like a Cheese Cake Factory menu and your decision could end up being a serious mistake. Plus add long lines to shows you probably won't get into (The Roots, Fiona Apple, Grimes, Miike Snow, The Shins, etc) and the walking (OH THE WALKING!) from venue to venue can be daunting. Well we here at Kata Rokkar are going to make it easier for you to check out bands you might like. If you don't like [...]
