"Okay, we've got red, orange, and purple," Gin said. "Now we just need yellow, green, and blue." "Don't forget indigo," Sandy said as she scanned the row of lipstick tubes. "What are you talking about?" "Indigo," Sandy repeated as if that explained everything. "You know. ROY G. BIV. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet." [...]

You remember the time when you and your mates talked about starting a band? They were great dreams, weren't they? But in the end, you couldn't. It wasn't your fault. You couldn't get your hands on any musical instruments, so you just sat around one drunken evening drumming on old tins and playing kazoos. It was a great evening, but nothing ever came of it. After all, who would want to listen to that sort of racket? Well, plenty of people, actually. Your problem wasn't that you couldn't get real instruments. [...]

A few years ago, who'd have thought that scrappy, oddball No Wave would have its own little Modern Library? It's a testament to its decidedly hard to define, thorny nature that each of the following books is indispensable in its own way, offering up fresh takes on a scene that never stuck around long enough to wear out its welcome. ( No Wave Post-Punk Underground 1976-1980 will be covered in more depth on Sunday.) • NY Noise [Soul Jazz] The companion book to the excellent Soul [...]
The overwhelming, suffocating, massive glut of bandwidth has forced me into the bleakest of landscapes. I am adding to it - a speck of ash [ x ] and a single blade of yellowed, trampled grass [ x ]. My favourite song from many years ago: Something - Call And Response A future fit for me: L'Enfant Assassin des Mouches - Jean-Claude Vanier Proof beyond proof of the main conflicting forces in my life: As a concept becomes [...]

So, what is No Wave? The name came about as reaction to the term New Wave. At the tail end of the 70's the record industry was trying to rebrand punk & labeled the poppier bands that came in the aftermath of Punk as New Wave. The No Wave bands wanted to reject this poppier side but they also felt no affinity to Punk. At the time, Lydia Lunch (the queen of No Wave?) bemoaned how Punk was just sped up Chuck Berry riffs & it is true that if you listen to most (but not all!) punk [...]

Named after the Essential Logic song, this new exhibit at Music Is A Better Noise , currently on exhibit at PS1 in Queens, “brings together musicians who make art and artists who make music.†The first section focuses on the fertile mid-1970s to early 1980s period (see also: NYU’s recent Downtown Show ), and includes contributions from Barbara Ess, whose pinhole camera photographs have graced the cover of Blind Spot and who has played in the Static, Y Pants, and Ultra Vulva, Alan Vega (Suicide) and legendarily eccentric hip-hop iconoclast Rammellzee. The second section rounds up [...]

...except that I like it. I also like you, blog reading public. I will now bring my likes together, like so. Love is All - "Kiss Kiss Kiss" (Yoko Ono cover) Love is All's kick ass Nine Times That Same Song album is clearly one of the finest that 2006 has coughed up. Its early year release date, and the fact that Pitchfork somehow bent time and space to put it on their 2005 Best of, [...]
