An accomplished set of instrumental tunes from a six-string whiz. Yair Yona's 2009 album Remember contained numerous sweet instrumental guitar pieces, heavy on the acoustic side of things, with skillful fingerpicking and a variety of moods. It was, however, an austere set built around solo instrumental playing, sans vocals. Acoustic solo guitar can be a tricky thing. It [...]

Coconut and The Duke (plus The Duchess) are working on their new Single (due out next Tuesday). When I get overwhelmed by life, I like to listen to instrumental music. Specifically, acoustic guitar stuff. Yair Yona is a new picker I was emailed about. His album came out last year but has been re-released in the [...]

Sean Smith is an excellent guitarist and a visionary composer, in the field of steel-string guitar music. He proved it over the years with several releases, though his talent was exposed to the world much thanks to the fantastic Tompkins Square compilation Berkley Guitar (this year they released the sequel - Beyond The Berkly Guitar). In both [...]
+יאיר יונה קופץ לבקר עם מיקסטייפ אורח משירי אוקרביל ריבר - הלהקה המעולה שתופיע כאן ממש... מחר בערב!,
With an overt love for Fahey, Basho and Jansch and a refracted kinship with latter day string pickers from Chasney to Rose; Israeli guitarist Yair Yona seems to draw much more from the American Delta and British Hills than from Israel's musical tradition. But Yona's immersion into the styles of these two continents strikes a fitting tribute, with a fluid style and simple touches of sadness trickling from his fingertips. Occasionally Yona's influences play very far from the chest, with songs like "Pharaoh" practically screaming Fahey, but when the instrumentation is layered; with moans of slide sidling over the picking, [...]
