The increasingly prolific Berkeley-via-Jersey pop experimentalist Yalls just released a brand new digital EP called The Voice (no relation to the shitty singing competition), and you can pay what you want on Bandcamp to download the album's eight, mostly sample-driven electronic cuts. Dan Casey a/k/a Yalls has been writing and producing electronic pop music in Oakland, California for a few years now. In 2011, he released a self-titled tape with MJMJ, followed by a second full-length last year. At first I didn’t want to listen to it because the cover art is yellow and I hate yellow, but I am glad I hit play because the first two tracks blew my mind. Oakland, California’s brightest gem, the one man production show behind the always animated concoction of funk-stained beats, Yalls , debuts the first single off his forthcoming EP, The Voice . Murmuring indecision flutters and sighs across almost auto-tuned, chopped up pitch shifts and carefree percussion. Though the mastermind behind Yalls, is solo producer, Dan Casey, he is able to create this full band feel out of gurgling distortion, digital effects, soothing vocals coos, and buzzing bass that bleeds through the track, tying it all together.

It's always nice to see one of your favourite bands of artists release something out of the blue; an 'oh, cool' moment. We got one of those yesterday when Yalls unleashed a new cut from a new EP that's out, well, next week (so consider this your warning). Said EP is called Voice , and lead track 'Dark Wing' is a nice change of pace for its creator, Dan Casey, seeming to take things in a darker direction, something which we hope the EP itself continues to explore. The Oakland electronic project Yalls seems to have very few dull moments. Dan Casey has released numerous records out of his apartment studio, while simultaneously actively working on his more indie rock side project, Steezy Ray Vibes . "Dark Wing" is perfectly indicative of the direction the live Yalls sets have been moving lately - darker, less vocal-driven, with song structures that seem to fold back onto themselves. Trails and Ways have been prepping the release of their upcoming debut album, Trilingual , due out sometime this year. To make the wait a little bit more bearable, the band put together this remix EP titled, Detornar-se . In case you were wondering, Detornar-se is Portuguese reflexive verb that double translates to "un make" as well as détournement, which is a variation of a previous work of media. Trails and Ways was one of mt favorite great indie surprises of 2012. After finding out about them from Ghost Beach through the remixes they had done together , I went in to discover I really loved their genre of dream pop, especially their song "Border Crosser."
