SHOW REVIEW: Yann Tiersen at the Regency Ballroom

SHOW REVIEW: Yann Tiersen at the Regency Ballroom I entered the slightly packed Regency Ballroom with minimal knowledge of what Yann Tiersen is like in a live setting. All I knew were his heartbreaking and simplistic compositions for the films Amélie and Good Bye Lenin . I did have a few tracks from 20102s Dust Lane , but I don't remember if I particularly enjoyed it enough to return to it. After carefully doing my research on his recent album, Skyline , I realized his non-soundtrack material is significantly different but no less engaging and cinematic. Like a Villain [...]

Les métamorphoses de Yann Tiersen

Yann Tiersen - The Gutter (Skyline)

Live Review: Yann Tiersen at Los Angeles' Fonda Theatre (5/13)

Live Review: Yann Tiersen at Los Angeles' Fonda Theatre (5/13) Though Yann Tiersen is perhaps best known in the US for his highly imaginative film scores—the 41-year-old French multi-instrumentalist was responsible for the whimsical piano- and accordian-based soundtrack to Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2001 cult hit Amélie —his talents extend far beyond gorgeous instrumental soundscapes that made him famous. On his latest LP Skyline , Tiersen moves further away from his early classical-leaning works, committing himself to a more dynamic post-rock tinged sound that translated into an incredibly compelling live show at the Fonda on Saturday night. Tracks from Skyline dominated Tiersen's [...]

Live Around Town This Week Ghostland Observatory will lazerize WaMu this weekend / photo by Christopher Nelson We've got another great week of shows in Seattle, with a ton of variety. Starting on Monday night, we've got some great Northwest connections back in town with former Fleet Fox Josh Tillman's new project, Father John Misty , performing at Neumos. [Record Store Day 2012] Yann Tiersen at J&R, 4/21/12

I've participated in Record Store Day each year since its inception in 2008. This year, ahead of two New York shows promoting his new album, Skyline, Yann Tiersen played a short set at J&R. I, like most girls who can't speak French, loved the movie Amélie in high school. The soundtrack, by Yann, is one [...]

Yann Tiersen played MHOW & Irving Plaza with Felix (pics/setlist)

Yann Tiersen played MHOW & Irving Plaza with Felix (pics/setlist) photos by Joe McCabe Yann Tiersen @ Irving Plaza As [opener] Felix 's set ambled to a close, the arrival of synthesizers, an electric bass, and guitars led to some murmurs in the audience. The crowd erupts into applause as four, lanky, forty-something men gathered on stage and equipped themselves with their distinctly 'rock' instruments. The most distinct of them all (gaunt, stubbled, and smoker's-lunged) was Yann Tiersen , who nestled in the corner of the [...]

Yann Tiersen: Skyline

Yann Tiersen - Monuments
Anti- gives the adventuresome composer's latest piece an official US Release, proving that Skyline has lost none of its charm since its initial UK Mute release last year. Yann Tiersen is somewhat of an anomaly and has been placed under heavy scrutiny since exploding onto the world's radar with his soundtrack for Amelie. He's never considered himself a composer yet continues to compose for films and create albums worth of songs that play out like legitimate scores and compositions. Skyline is no exception to this, and it's stronger for it, showcasing Tiersen at the current height of [...]

Review of Yann Tiersen's Skyline and giveaway

Review of Yann Tiersen's Skyline and giveaway Facebook Whilst perusing the shelves at Soundscapes on Saturday, was a little surprised to find Yann Tiersen's latest Skyline - released last year in Europe and last week in North America - filed under "World Music". Looking a bit closer, I saw that it was actually in a World Music subsection marked, "French Pop" which I suppose is technically accurate, but also not really. In fact, I'm glad it's not my job to try and file Tiersen's records because it's something of an impossible task. Sure, [...]

Yann Tiersen – Comptine d’un autre été: L’après-midi (Benedikt Hammer Cover)

After sharing my mix, some people asked me who did this cover for Yann Tiersen's "Comptine d'un autre été". Well, I have been listening to it for ages. In fact, I found it via Benedikt Hammer's soundcloud a couple months ago and at the time I blogged it. Once again, for the ones who missed [...]
