Yarn Owl - Go In a sea of shimmering folk music with the likes of Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses, MMJ or John Vanderslice, Yarn Owl a PNW band, glimmers and shines much like these predecessors. Yarn Owl has released a beautiful sounding album in 'Montaña y Caballo'. Their jangly guitars and ethereal vocals create an intimate and very lush sound that will have fans coming back to again and again. Definitely worth the $5 tag they are putting on the album. Get over to their bandcamp ... and buy it. [...]

If you like your indie rock as majestic as the Cascades, as life-giving as a strong cup of coffee (black) and as lush as the towering pines along Puget Sound - well, you'll want to check out Seattle's Yarn Owl. Montaña Y Caballo, the band's impressive debut, shares soaring bombast (and a band member) with vintage Band of Horses, plus the pastoral earthiness of Fleet Foxes. Suffice it to say that if you're a fan of either of those bands, you'll find something to like here. Album opener "Go" starts on the folkier [...]

Good Tuesday to everyone out there in internets world. To celebrate the long week ahead, here's a newish track from Seattle based band Yarn Owl entitled "Embrace Our Place". The band, featuring former Band of Horses member Tim Meining, recently released their debut LP Montaña Caballo last month and are currently playing shows in support. Ironically enough, the band sort of sounds a bit like Band of Horses , but with a much stronger foot stopping rhythm section. You can also stream the band's entire new LP over on their sweet bandcamp page [...]
Bandcamp foraging can be a fruitful endeavor. From Pullman, Washington comes Yarn Owl, another dynamite entry into the ever-growing Northwest folk scene. Bands like Fleet Foxes, Blitzen Trapper and Band of Horses have been among the gems to come out of the flannel-wearing, beard-sporting genre. The band's first full-length album, the 10-song Montana Y Caballo, [...]

I've known Yarn Owl 's Ted Powers (drums) and Timothy Meinig (bass) since, well, probably 2005. Javier Suarez (vocals and guitar) I met in the years after my 2006 departure. In fact, the only band member I have yet to met is Tyler Armour. So yes, I've been following Yarn Owl, virtually, since the beginning. With their first full-length now available, and a planned west-coast visit this coming weekend (see them at Columbia City Theater in Seattle on March 26 and again at Sunset Tavern on the 31st), I sat down [...]

6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day. Consider it your jam of the day — a sweet, sweet gift from me to you. I love you, dude. I'm really digging Yarn Owl. I think you will too. Yarn Owl :: Dark Air [MP3] [...]

What better way to kick off your Friday than with a selection of the best tracks from the It All Started archives? If I'm honest though, this is really just an excuse for me to repost all those tracks that I love and that you may have missed the first time round. It's high quality stuff, and there'll be more this time next week. Enjoy! Alter Ego - Jean-Louis Aubert Spaceships - Patchwork [...]

You Should Know Washington-state band Yarn Owl creates music that not only evokes imagery of the Pacific Northwest but they do so without skimping on the pop sensibility. Their 2009 limited edition cassette release Tiny Dots masterfully combines a lo-fi aesthetic with sweeping reverb-heavy guitar play, echoed vocals sure to please anyone keen on Fleet Foxes and Band of Horses, and a knack for catchy harmonies and smart arrangements. On Tiny Dots opener "Yarn Blues," lead singer Javier Suarez's understated vocals interplay gorgeously with [...]
Yarn Owl - Single Cell Found this in my inbox the other day and it definitely got my attention. By "it" I mean the band Yarn Owl; a four piece out... (Visit my blog for more!)

Not surprisingly, this list is filled with EPs by quite a few bands you know and quite a few you probably don't. Of the ones you don't know, many are likely from Washington; a quick count leaves me with five bands, or 1/4 of this list. Many of these bands I consider among the most promising artists to surface in 2009. All are worth checking out, and you'll want to keep an eye on them as we head into 2010. I titled the above image of my cousin Danny [...]

I think I've told you this before, but I often download songs without listening to them first. Usually, it's the words that accompany the song that convince me to grab it, although exceptions to this rule include songs by bands I'm already familiar with or covers. Once I've got a bit of a stash happening, I'll load them all onto my iPod and listen to these unknown songs all in one go, quite often while I'm exercising. I've not been running as often as I used to because I got my bike all fixed up so I've been [...]
Yarn Owl - Bicycle. It isn't until the refrain in the back third of the song that it really wins you over. The beginning, begging to be sound in a round, or at least with some harmonies, is the kind of mossy, woodsy thing we expect and love from the Pacific Northwest. It reminds you of hitting sticks against trees in the woods behind your house, all damp, all covered in rich soil. But the final part, where the harmony kicks in and they sing about the girl coming home from her library is the what makes you really...

Yarn Owl - Yarn Blues I found these guys after skimming from one MySpace profile after another and they make for a fine discovery: poppy multi-harmonies from Pullman, Washington, with a tape entitled Tiny Dots out on Leftist Nautical Antiques and a six-song release called Stay Warm due in the new year. FensePost is excited to provide you with an exclusive sneak peek off the new Yarn Owl EP, Stay Warm , scheduled for release early next year. "Bicycle" is the name of the song, and it's their catchiest track since "Yarn Blues". Yarn Owl's jangly guitars and dreamy folk-pop is emphasized by harmony vocals that echo in the band's foreground. This song comes with Yarn Owl's first music video, featuring stop-motion photography. The concept is simple, mimicking blinking lights or spinning wheels. I like to think [...]
