This was my first time to a show at The Daily Grind Art Cafe on July 26, 2012. It was kind of a nice intimate show. Playing at the show were: Factory Owl Yellow Jacket Avenger I was suppose to see Plumes play but they added another act which made things delay more. Anyways here are the photos from the set

Well, the timing on this one is perfect. As a result of rain, logistics and shitty prep by us, we didn't head up to Sappyfest yesterday and ended up missing most of the bands we added to the latest installment of the Canadian Mixtape project. Oh well. Such is life I guess. So, where do we stand with Quebec. Montreal is often called the epicentre of music for Canada - and maybe outside of Brooklyn, the biggest spot for huge indie bands - but we tried to stay away from some of the bigger names. So [...]
I like to read Susan Sontag's diary entries from when she was just turning 26. She's neurotic and impetuous, wrapped up in the imagined details of others. Here is this thinking giant of the Western canon, suddenly reduced to an ordinary, self-obsessed 20-something. (Okay, so Sontag is anything but ordinary--even in her journal, she is a powerful, potent writer and thinker.) Still, it's nice to be reminded that all of us contain (and struggle with) this selfish, hot humanity. "Smells Like Teen Spirit (Cover)" - [...]
Yellow Jacket Avenger - "The Special Fate" Behind all of the well-manipulated old machines, the austere perfection of synthesized sound, is a tender-hearted creature with a penchant for touching melody. The backing track could be Bjork's and the bridge's vocal David Byrne's, but there's also Peter Gabriel here - an unabashed, if otherworldly, sap. "In summer with my old friends/we swam by the moon/Through the grass we'd creep/on the shore we'd leave our shoes," Yellow Jacket Avenger reminisces over the wheezy, unnatural sounds of his dance music nearly too slow to dance to. [Buy YJA's lovely and [...]

A while ago I read an article in The Coast about Halifax's Yellow Jacket Avenger , aka Geoffrey Pye, and thought "this is an an interesting fellow, make mental note to check him out further". But like so many of my mental notes ("learn Flemish", "learn to play the Theramin", "further explore the films of portly martial arts expert Sammo Hung"), it got lost for awhile in the many crevices of my brain. Luckily, Paul from Wolves, Hawks and Kites mentioned him recently and that jogged my memory. Originally from Ottawa, the man [...]

Alright, so this song isn't officially a part of Yellow Jacket Avenger 's excellent debut album, Double Nature , but I can't stop listening to it anyway. Flowing like the sly waterway that graces its lyrics ( " The river is following me " ), "Hiding Out" is a smooth and fluid tune complete with a driving rhythm that assures you'll be carried downstream (cheesy, I know, but I'm too busy enjoying this track to really care). Yellow Jacket Avenger - Hiding Out [...]
Yellow Jacket Avenger - "Little Thief" 1. Among the bands that list Yellow Jacket Avenger as an influence on their MySpace pages are Kepler, the Wooden Stars, and Clark the Band. 2. Yellow Jacket Avenger lists Joan Armatrading as an influence on his MySpace page, and in the chorus of "Little Thief," this influence is unmistakable. 3. Sometimes YJA's music is fierce, mathy post-punk; sometimes it's easy instrumental. Sometimes his music is entirely organic; sometimes it's exclusively electronic. At its core, however, there is always a pure, delicate, pop sensibility. 4. Several years ago I was driving to Halifax, where [...]
