Filed under: News , Exclusive Tom Hines Despite their synthy, somewhat retro sound, Brooklyn pop duo Chairlift insist that they weren't intentionally influenced by the music of the '80s. In fact, they weren't even listening to a lot of music from that decade when they made their debut album, 2008's Does You Inspire You . It wasn't until the record started eliciting comparisons to acts from the era that singer and synth master Caroline Polachek [...]

It seems that everyone is loving Yellow Magic Orchestra at the moment. I've been trying to figure out why there's such an explosion of YMO related tunes floating around recently, but all I can settle on is that Japanese tunes are in vogue as the next, relatively untapped source of rare grooves and beats due to language differences. Italo and Euro beats are naturally more comfortable to mine through, but Japanese music history has been seemingly left untouched. Regardless, here's some tunes from solo ventures from Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto (both of YMO) if you haven't stumbled [...]

Sandii Zoot Kook Formerly Sandy & The Sunset Gang, Kook is a nice slice of left-field disco from Hawaiian-born Sandy O'neale, produced by Yukihiro Takahashi, Haruomi Hosono, & Ryuichi Sakamoto from Yellow Magic Orchestra, from her LP Earthly Pleasures . Besides the gold-to-my-ears production (anything that seems like it could be part of a video art performance from 1983 I love, really), it's a solidly built song, and Sandii's voice has many of the same characteristics that make Allison Goldfrapp so endearing. [...]
Yellow Magic Orchestra have been making boundary pushing electronic music and ElectroPop since before you know what a synthesizer was. Show some respect! 'Rydeen' is from 1980, by which time they were already comfortable making big Electro jams while much of the rest of the world was on Tomorrow's World complaining that synthesizer music wasn't somehow real. This week's podcast is brought to you by someone from a very special place for me, Singapore. For a beginner, originating from a city or country (in this case, both) where the musical scene is tiny and has no international influence, sure doesn't help getting attention from the right people and labels. It can be argued that when [...]

For those who think the Germans had a monopoly on visionary robotic synth pop, here's a track for you. Some crispy, groovy music for a car chase on a highway of the future. Yellow Magic Orchestra - Solid State Survivor

Since our previous guest, Das Moth (as fantastically interviewed in depth here ) mentioned a few of his influences, I thought I would just touch on one key artist. Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) began as a 'one off' band, with Haruomi Hosono taking Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto on board as session musicians for a cover album of Martin Denny's Firecracker, which ended up being more popular than expected, exploding the three onto the 70's Japanese electronica scene. Seen as synth pioneers, alongside Kraftwerk etc they produced some gold, and admittedly some awful, dinky shit. This taster [...]
Like many children of the '80s, I grew up idolizing Michael Jackson . In fact, some of the earliest surviving VHS footage from my youth showcases my attempts at the moonwalk. Despite many of his later accusations and odd behaviors, Jackson's early influence on my own musical upbringing always remained, so I was taken aback when I heard of his passing. To his fans, it was the end of an era. Naturally, I was a bit hesitant to embrace [...]

yellow magic orchestra - "mass" (download) Great single from Japanese electronic pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra. Released in 1981. A real head-nodder. These guys were WAY ahead of their time. website

Things usually fare well for film geeks when they show a passion for making music. By film "geeks", I'm not referring to that friend who can name every David Lynch or Lars von Trier film. They might know every underground film in existence, but if they have no knowledge of production or the film aesthetic [...]

Yellow Magic Orchestra - Computer Games (Extended Version) by loudersoft I never stop loving the idea of the great Ryuichi Sakamoto being in this band. Go with it, and wait at least a full two minutes for the groove to kick in. Yellow Magic Orchestra - Computer Games (Extended Version) [119 BPM] [ Yellow Magic Orchestra info on Discogs ]

Yellow Magic Orchestra - X∞Multiplies Nice Age Behind The Mask Rydeen Day Tripper Technopolis Multiples Citizens Of Science Solid State Survivor Talk about a band that's criminally underheard (in America anyways). Yellow Magic Orchestra is one of the synth-pop bands. As far as I'm concerned they're one of the first bands to perfect the [...]
