Yellow Ostrich performs "Elephant King" live in-studio for HearYa.com on 8/5/12. The session was recorded in downtown Chicago at Shirk Music + Sound Studios. Listen and get free downloads of their album at their bandcamp page

A couple of years back when Yellow Ostrich (aka Alex Schaaf) released his excellent debut, The Mistress , I read about how it was self recorded at his home using laptops, loops, etc. When laptops enter the picture, I usually head for the door so I initially ignored Yellow Ostrich. Fast forward a year or so later and Yellow Ostrich was preparing to release their second album, Strange Land . Alex Schaaf, now had two-full time bandmates in Jon Natchez and Michael Tapper and there was something about this album's description that made me check out [...]
The title track from Yellow Ostrich's Ghost (Barsuk) has a new video. The clip was directed by the Brooklyn-based band and Frank Larson. Watch it below.
Here I am, left to go last once again with my favorite songs of the year. I feel as though I listened to more in 2012 than in any other year, and my musical experience was all the better for it. More music means more candidates, which admittedly makes lists like this one tougher. But [...]

15. Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan - Always known for their superbly creative music, Dirty Projectors were back at it this year with Swing Lo Magellan, a stylistically eclectic record that is highly danceable (surprisingly enough) with pop hooks that will grab you at the throat. It's a record that feels spontaneous, featuring polyrhythmic elements that delight your ears from every angle. This may be the most accessible music they've created to date, it's a fun album to listen to in just about all situations. Listen: Dirty Projectors - Gun Has No Trigger | Buy: [...]
2012: The year that the world was supposed to end, or so the Mayans said. 2012 has been a whirlwind of a year. However, when I look back at it, it wasn’t that much of a whirlwind. It seems like a big blur, the longest stretch of a year. Granted, we did get an extra day with it being leap year and all. In 2012, I visited friends and family in some cities that I’ve never been to before, I went to a fair amount of awesome shows, and I spent quality time with loved ones-though not enough quality time. [...]
The Brooklyn based, indie folk band, Yellow Ostrich, have a warm folk sound entwined with the surprising element of synyth, electronic melodies. read more

2012 - the year in which the Mayans saw it fit to end all days would make a pretty nice conclusion to all things, or well when it comes to music at least. I would gesture it's been a good year from the fact that I had particular difficulties in narrowing down my favorite releases, and it really has been a good year. Never mind even ranking them, just whittling down to these 10 was a challenge enough. This past year was great in that it saw plenty of newcomers take hold, and even better, the new guys from last year firmly [...]
Another year, another great crop of songs. Some of you might be surprised to see a handful of radio smash hits on here, but I'd be lying to myself and you if I didn't include them in a list of my favorite songs of 2012. There's a Spotify playlist (with a few extra songs) to [...]

10. GROSS RELATIONS Gross Relations [autoprodotto] Brillante esempio di garage pop made in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn based band Yellow Ostrich is prolific as ever, recently releasing their fantastic six song EP , Ghost. The indie rock trio – frontman Alex Schaaf, drummer Michael Tapper (Bishop Allen, Fool's Gold, We Are Scientists), and multi-instrumentalist Jon Natchez (Beirut, Camera Obscura, Okkervil River) – continue in their vein of solid rock, building layers of sound upon instruments, vocals, and reverb for a set of songs that fully envelope the listener into their own world. Check out standouts like the lo-fi title track and “Here Today.” – Written by SMarx httpvh:// [...]

Considering I listen to roughly ten new albums each week on Spotify, it’s not easy narrowing down my list of top albums to just five. While my favorite album was determined months ago, the rest of the top 5 and my honorable mentions list has fluctuated greatly. However, after much internal debate, shuffling of positions, and a far amount of procrastination, I present my top albums of 2012. 5. Imperial China – How We Connect The [...]
