A couple of years back when Yellow Ostrich (aka Alex Schaaf) released his excellent debut, The Mistress , I read about how it was self recorded at his home using laptops, loops, etc. When laptops enter the picture, I usually head for the door so I initially ignored Yellow Ostrich. Fast forward a year or so later and Yellow Ostrich was preparing to release their second album, Strange Land . Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan - Always known for their superbly creative music, Dirty Projectors were back at it this year with Swing Lo Magellan, a stylistically eclectic record that is highly danceable (surprisingly enough) with pop hooks that will grab you at the throat. It's a record that feels spontaneous, featuring polyrhythmic elements that delight your ears from every angle. This may be the most accessible music they've created to date, it's a fun album to listen to in just about all situations. 2012: The year that the world was supposed to end, or so the Mayans said. 2012 has been a whirlwind of a year. However, when I look back at it, it wasnt that much of a whirlwind. It seems like a big blur, the longest stretch of a year. Granted, we did get an extra day with it being leap year and all. In 2012, I visited friends and family in some cities that Ive never been to before, I went to a fair amount of awesome shows, and I spent quality time with loved ones-though not enough quality time. 2012 - the year in which the Mayans saw it fit to end all days would make a pretty nice conclusion to all things, or well when it comes to music at least. I would gesture it's been a good year from the fact that I had particular difficulties in narrowing down my favorite releases, and it really has been a good year.Never mindeven ranking them, just whittling down to these 10 was a challenge enough.
