On Saturday night, Bob Weir, the Grateful Dead legend, played a show at his own TRI Studios in San Rafael, California. At the show, he was backed by a one-off band called the Bridge Session. As Rolling Stone reports , that group included the National's Aaron Dessner and Bryan and Scott Devondorf, as well as Doveman and members of the Walkmen, Takka Takka, and the Yellowbirds. About 100 people crammed into the tiny room, and the band played a bunch of Dead classics, as well as covers of Bob Dylan and, of all people, Cass McCombs. [...]

If you missed last night's The Bridge Session webcast featuring Bob Weir and a backing band of indie musicians including members of Yellowbirds and The National, or if you just want to see it again, Yahoo! Music has shared four full segments from the two-set concert . China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider Daughters of the Soho Riots [...]

Months in the making, last night Grateful Dead/Furthur guitarist Bob Weir performed with members of The National , Yellowbirds and other Brooklyn-based musicians as part of a free live webcast called The Bridge Session put together by HeadCount and held at TRI Studios . The 10-person ensemble performed two sets that included plenty of Grateful Dead classics, a pair of The National's songs and even a few choice covers. Of particular note was the first version of Weir's My Brother Esau sung by Bobby since the Grateful Dead last played the Barlow/Weir chestnut [...]

If you're looking to catch great live music tomorrow in NYC on the cheap, we've got a suggestion for you. Relix and one-time HT contributor Sam Davis of Dog Gone Blog fame has teamed up with Bowery Presents to bring two of Brooklyn's best budding acts to The Mercury Lounge on Manhattan's Lower East Side tomorrow night for a mere $10. HT faves Yellowbirds , whose exceptional debut album The Color scored a spot in our staff's Best Albums of 2011 list , will take the stage at [...]

Tweet vaso link If there is one band I miss it is Apollo Sunshine. Guitarist Sam Cohen has gone on to find success with his new band Yellowbirds, who put out one of the best albums of 2011. And now bass player/wild man extraordinaire Jesse Gallagher has put together a band of his own. If Yellowbirds has staked claim to the prettier side of Apollo Sunshine's sound, then this new band has apparently taken the dirtier end, and appropriately (if [...]

Things are finally picking up here in New York City as the indie music world waiting until Valentine's Day week to start pulling all the punches. For the second straight week, you can join us for a "The Wild Honey Pie Presents" gig, this time over in Brooklyn at Park Slope's Union Hall where we'll be celebrating a special occasion on Saturday night. What is this special occasion you ask? You Won't is celebrating the release of their debut record, Skeptic Goodbye , and ringing it in with the gorgeous ladies of Lucius [...]
Here at Hidden Track, compiling our end of the year list of the 25 best albums has been eerily similar to the process of devising another top 25 list - the college football top 25. When we started four years ago, we attempted to devise a quantitative methodology that systematized the rankings and took the individual biases out of the equation, while still incorporating the collective views of everyone involved at HT. Well, that was sort of our BCS. This year we're going back to the old school and running it AP Top 25 style. In other words, every writer [...]

On Friday, November 11, we're taking over the music venue Pianos in lower Manhattan and celebrating the 2nd birthday of The Wild Honey Pie . In planning our b-day bash, I couldn't think of a better way than bringing 5 of my absolute favorite bands together and inviting our friends and readers out to party down with me and the rest of the team. Having this blog/website has been an amazing time and gets better every day. Thank you for all the continued support and I hope to see you on 11/11/11! [...]
Filed under: Video of the Day Artist: Yellowbirds Video: 'Beneath the Reach of Light' Highlight: "The song is about bringing some sort of truth back from a dream that illuminates your waking life, so, first we talked about different ways dreams have been portrayed in film, then got a little pretentious and carried away, tried to rein that in, and kind of rode these waves of proposing really ambitious ideas and figuring out what we could actually pull off with no money," [...]
We just got hit with the first snowfall of the season here in NYC. Even though the weather's starting to chill out, the live shows are keeping up the heat. Check out my preview of the week's shows with some videos of my top picks, including Ween, Battles, and Steve Kimock & Friends. Monday's all [...]

Sam Cohen has released a new video for Yellowbirds, his solo project. "Beneath The Reach Of Light" is the latest single off of this year's album, The Color . Check out the video.
Yellowbirds' video for "Beneath The Reach of Light" was directed by Erez Horovitz. Give some time for Yellowbirds on Daytrotter .

Apparently, it's Sam Cohen week on the ole blog. Tuesday, I posted about the former Apollo Sunshine musician's psychedelic-infused solo project Yellowbirds . Now today, we have The Bandana Splits: a doo-wop flavored girl-group project produced by Cohen. The trio of singers is comprised of Brooklynites Lauren Balthrop, Annie Nero, and one of Everybody Taste's favorite folkies, Dawn Landes. Try a single serving of the fabulous debut via "Sometimes"—an irresistibly upbeat harmony and tambourine smothered gem that immediately lifts the spirits. The album, Mr. Sam Presents The Bandana Splits , is out now and you can snag your [...]

It's funny that when we first heard the Yellowbirds back in March we described them as a mix of My Morning Jacket and Wes Anderson. Turns out we weren't too far off judging by the wonderfully Anderson-esque video for stand out single "Beneath The Reach of Light". The video does a fabulous job recreating a talk show from the golden age of TV, full of vintage camera effects, retro typography, and a hell of a wardrobe. But just as things seem to be going as expected, the two characters suddenly find themselves on beautiful beach making use of [...]

Sam Cohen, formerly of the great Apollo Sunshine, released his solo debut The Color as Yellowbirds this past February. However, solo is a bit of an understatement, as this is no one-man band: pedal steels sparkle, drums pound, walls of guitar wail, and psychedelic washes of warm tone permeate through every second of music. Yet, this grandly produced work is also a surprisingly intimate one thanks to the steady voice of Cohen. As far as the music pushes and travels, Cohen remains in place as the even-toned voice of reason and only ticket out of Wonderland. Below, check [...]

This past Sunday, Vetiver (@vetiver) fans packed The Bell House in Gowanus, Brooklyn for an intimate set from the San Francisco band. It was my first time seeing them, and, while their musicianship was on full display, I couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed by the overall pace of the show. Andy Cabic's distinct vocals and Hindman's tight guitar playing, though, were truly sounds to behold. Opening the evening was Meg Baird , followed by the always amazing [...]
