As Kraig and I were sitting in between bands at the What Laura Says/Dear and the Headlights show, the "set change music" came on and it happened to be a super-Coldplay mix. This, of course, got us talking about the new album and Coldplay in general. Kraig espoused the theory that everyone, whether they will admit it or not, likes Coldplay. Even Chris Rock . Not like that that proves anything (no offense Chris Rock), but I kept pondering his theory and what I can't get past is the simple fact that I can't [...]

Bodies Of Water, A Certain Feeling (Secretly Canadian, 2008) MP3 : "Under The Pines" Most bands fail miserably at describing their own sound - even when the music is good, they bog themselves down in unhelpful hyperbole. Bodies Of Water are smarter than that. Included in their concise, self-description is the line, "They play loud, intricate songs and sing very emphatically, usually all at once." Then they site influences like "the metaphysical intensity of gospel, the earnest [...]
There's just something about the 80's that inspires great cover songs. So great, in fact, that this series is gonna be a two-parter. First up: Rock. All the excesses of the 80's – big hair, ten-minute guitar solos, and Jon Bon Jovi – are all well represented below by artists who aren't afraid to find the good songs amidst the novelty. And stay tuned for some 80's pop next week. Jessica Will - For Those About to Rock (AC/DC) When AC/DC titled this [...]

Despite the volume of whiskey and other things ingested at the prompting of my high school pal Noel to better "get" Yes -- it just never happened. He became a Yes-aholic, and me? Well, I preferred tunes that weren't 8 minutes long -- or a whole album side long. Sheezus. What torture. Make mine punk or new wave. But a funny thing happened -- Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman left Yes and the Buggles - the f'n BUGGLES - joined! What th'? I was in clover and Noel was in--censed. And you guys get guilty pleasure/embarrassing post #3! [...]

Buffalo 66 - Simply awesome film. If you haven't seen it immediately stop what your doing & go and watch it. Vincent Gallo's first feature film sees him donning many hats (He wrote, directed and starred in it & also composed much of the soundtrack). He plays the brooding Billy Brown who has just been released from jail for a crime he didn't commit: Those first 24 hours are quite a ride.. The soundtrack is excellent: As mentioned, Gallo provides a lot of the musical accompaniment himself. The tune that augments the climatic final scene's comes from prog [...]

Yes - " South Side of the Sky " from Fragile (1972) Edmund Hillary died yesterday. By all accounts he was a pretty great guy, always emphasizing his normality despite the astounding thing he did. Speaking of astounding, the musicianship on this Yes track about mountaineering blows my mind each time I revisit it. Yes? No? Yes Posted by Jordy

Back in the early punk years, there was nothing more hilarious than the sight of a dinosaur prog act clawing desperately at relevance by cutting their hair, sporting skinny ties and attempting to write more concise, less grandiose rock opera concept albums. Funnier still, picture Yes convincing themselves that lyrics about winged horses and "dancing with the spirits of the age" would be perfect fodder for their 1978 LP Tormato , believing it would resonate with the angry youth culture of the era. For reasons I'm still working out via weekly shock therapy treatments, I [...]

we were barely out of the midtown tunnel when ione decided she has had enough. "daddy, i want to get out," she declared. good thing daphne and i had anticipated this, albeit closer to the end of our drive than the beginning. like well-drilled commandos, we immediately launched into our pacification routine – a mix of facts and improvised distractions. "you can't get out now because we're driving…would you like mommy to tickle your legs?" "i want to get out…now," she said, clearly unimpressed and more [...]
Yes: Going For The One [1977] I kind of really want to go to this . Tonight is sold out, so I'm just sitting around listening to Tormato , wondering if I actually want to pull the trigger on tix for tomorrow...
