It's no secret that we here around HT HQ have been giddy with anticipation to hear Move Like This , the first album of new material in over two decades from influential New Wave act The Cars . While it seemed unlikely that that band was going to play any live dates, especially after Ric told Rolling Stone that he was "leery of touring," last week the reunited act announced that they would in fact be heading out together in support of the new record. [...]
It sort of seems hard to believe, but it's been ten years since Jack Johnson put out his debut album Brushfire Fairytales via the small indie-label Enjoy Records (which is now known as Everloving ). When the pro-surfer turned musician's record was picked up for wider distribution, the label's co-founder and album's producer JP Plunier struck a unique deal with Universal, in which they could only have the masters for ten years. With masters tapes back in the hands of Everloving, the label has announced that on April 12 [...]
Over the last five nights, Yo La Tengo has been holding court at the tiny rock club/restaurant Maxwell's , their home away from home in Hoboken, NJ, with their mostly annual Hannukah run. After taking 2009 off from the tradition, the indie-rock trio have made up for the lost year in a major way, by recruited an impressive roster of heavyweight talent to open from them, ranging from singer-songwriter M. Ward to Wilco front man Jeff Tweedy, as well as comedians like Jim Gaffigan, Todd Barry and Eugene Mirman, with the details of who's playing [...]

As Yo La Tengo gears up for the start of their semi-annual eight-night Hannukah run at Maxwell's , which gets underway on December 1, the Hoboken-based band has announced a unique twist for their winter tour. The iconic indie-rock trio will split their nights into two sets, with the first 45 minutes of music to be determined by a spin on a Wheel Of Fortune. The wheel will feature eight distinct themes, which include The Freewheeling Yo La Tengo, Condo Fucks, Sitcom Theater and Songs Starting With S - full descriptions of each can be [...]

Frank Yang If there's an upside to getting a full night's sleep after turning in at 5AM, it's that it eliminates a lot of the decision-making around what to do with one's day. Hauling my ass out of bed at almost 1PM meant that all I had to do for the last day of Matador at 21 was shower, cram myself with enough food to get me through till the wee hours of the morning and stand in line waiting for the doors to the Pearl to open. Easy peasy. The weekend's [...]

As we previously reported venerable indie label Matador will celebrate their 21st anniversary in style with a three-day festival in Las Vegas which they have dubbed The Lost Weekend. The NYC-based label recently revealed the initial details for the festie, which will take place from October 1-3 at the Palms Resort & Casino , with a bill that features a veritable who's who from the label's 21 year history. Headlining will be the formidable foursome of Pavement, Sonic Youth, Belle & Sebastian & Guided By Voices - with their classic '93 - '96 lineup. Among [...]

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Miles Davis' landmark jazz-fusion album Bitches Brew. While the legendary double-album is getting a full deluxe reissue treatment that includes a 4-disc package of the original album on CD plus an audiophile vinyl pressing on 2 LPs and previously unissued material, we may be even more excited about what will be arriving later this summer from the fine folks at Dogfish Head . The Delaware-based brewery, who is known for their 60, 90 and 120 Minute IPAs, will be putting [...]
As we previously mentioned , venerable indie-jam rockers moe. are in the midst of celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. As part of this year-long festivities, the band will release their first greatest hits album entitled Smash Hits, Volume One on June 1 via their own label Fatboy Records. Putting the moe. twist on a compilation record, the one-time Buffalo-based act went into the studio and re-recorded several of their older tunes giving them an update from the original versions, as well as laying down the first ever studio version of [...]

Frankly, just being able to talk and about this show in the months leading up to it, not only with friends, but on emails, and with all the people on HT, made the whole thing so exciting. I've seen a lot of standout concerts and a lot of monumental sporting events in my day and nothing will ever come close to the energy level in the crowd that night. I think this one might just end up on top of my all time list. You could probably argue that musically, this one doesn't hold a flame to some other stuff, [...]

I love the setting that La Blogotheque puts their Take Away Shows in and how great they capture the essence of the moment. Thanks to Ryan from Muzzle of Bees for the heads up, because I'm still grinning from last Saturday's show. It seems sort of easy to take indie-rock Godfathers Yo La Tengo for granted when you live in and around the band's home base of Hoboken, NJ. The husband and wife fronted trio don't often seem like the band that easily fills large rock halls around the country, especially when you can catch them during their Hannukah run at their tiny hometown club Maxwell's . The band, who has been making music for 25 years, will impressively release their 13th studio album Popular Songs [...]
After a thirty-plus year hiatus from touring and recording the influential Brazilian-psychedelic band Os Mutantes will return to the road this fall to tour behind their first album of new material since 1974's Tudo Foi Feito Pelo Sol . The band, who will release their Anti Records debut Haih Or Amortecedor on September 8, has penciled in a couple of festivals appearances this summer, including a stop at Outside Lands, before heading out across the country for a full slate of headlining shows. [...]

Photo by Frank Yang How strange is it that of the three shows I've got lined up this week, all feature double-bills with acts that could each easily headline on their own. Of course, last night's show featuring Yo La Tengo and British Sea Power at the Berkeley Church doesn't technically count as a double bill since they were being recorded for separate episodes of Beautiful Noise but from the POV of the audience, it was a pretty terrific few hours of music without having to [...]

I picked this shirt up at the insanely awesome Yo La Tengo Hanukkah Night #3 show at Maxwell's in Hoboken, which also featured The dB's, Eugene Mirman, and Jim James of My Morning Jacket. Genius, no? And t-shirt sales profits at these shows go to charity. The dB's were fantastic, and I thought much better than when I saw them on the same stage last year. I was thrilled to be able to hear one of my favorite Christmas tunes, their [...]

The Special Pillow Genre: Rock / Pop / Psychedelic From: Hoboken, New Jersey United States The music industry is littered with young bands that burst on the scene gaining immediate critical acclaim and sell a few records before disappearing equally quickly. There are other bands that hover below the critical radar for years before coming to the attention of a wider audience. [...]
Monarch Genre: Indie / Folk Rock / Experimental From: Baltimore, Maryland United States Despite their relative youth (but then most bands are youthful to this old devil) Andy Stack and Jenn Wasner are veterans of the Baltimore scene having been involved with Caleb Stine and the Brakemen [...]

Okay, I'm late to this party. I just got Yo La Tengo's new album, I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass . I was just hangin' at the CD Cellar, looking for something new, and remembered how lots of folks I respect had put this on their best of '06 list. I'd heard a couple tracks before, but I didn't care for them. Still, I gave it another try. And I'm so glad I did. I don't know what I was thinking the first time around. This [...]

In need of a great excuse to not put off doing your taxes till the last minute? Yo La Tengo will be playing the Barrymore Theatre on April 14th. Tickets go on sale Friday, February 23rd at 10am and will be $20 in advance and day of show. Yo La Tengo's I'm Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass garnered them plenty of high praise, and as a long-standing presence in the indie scene this show is a huge addition to those [...]
