photos by PSquared Photography Yo La Tengo @ Maxwell's, 6/15/2013 "This band does not exist without this club," singer-guitarist Ira Kaplan announced during Yo La Tengo's final appearance at the sainted Hoboken, New Jersey locale Maxwell's last Saturday. (The venue is set to close on July 31.) Kaplan's concision was emblematic of the night, during which the trio were tasked with wrapping up a 33-year-long relationship with the room in two 45-minute sets. That they did so with a good [...]

Frank Yang Though generally referred to as a reunion, the return this year of The Postal Service to active duty is unlike most others in that it's to mark a very specific occasion - the 10th anniversary and reissue of their only album Give Up - and comes with no promise or expectation of carrying on after the occasion is past. And as much as people might think they want a second Postal Service record, I suspect that the truth is they don't. Much of the magic of [...]

You've already heard the news: The Replacements are playing Riot Fest Chicago , Toronto , and Denver . But perhaps lost in the shuffle of tonight's breaking news was the announcement of the other bands playing the Denver and Toronto offshoots (the lineup for Riot Fest Chicago was revealed last month). Riot Fest Toronto, set for August 24th-25th at Fort York, will feature The Replacements, Iggy and the Stooges, Rocket From the Crypt, Dinosaur Jr., and Best Coast, among others. Meanwhile, Riot Fest Denver, set for September 21st-22nd at May [...]
Former San Diegan Liz Godoy makes good with her new band
Maybe James McNew, the longtime Yo La Tengo bass player, feels anxiety listening to his remix of "Rose," but it actually alleviates mine, its ceaseless fuzz filling in the scatterbrained spaces around things to do ... read more

So after a whole month of not posting anything, it seemed like the right time to to compile one of my mixtapes. I've tried to keep it quite current, however I couldn't help from posting some stuff from the last ... Continue reading

We're at the halfway point of 2013 and it's time to take a look at the best of the year so far, according to me. Let's face it. Critics live for year-end lists....

Shervin Lainez If it were as recently as last year, I would be spending this post - hell, yesterday's post - talking about how after arriving in Chicago last Saturday, I went almost straight to Beat Kitchen to see Laura Stevenson and Field Mouse play, on account of missing the Toronto show of their tour this past Tuesday because of this little vacation. But because I've grown as a person and am no longer spending all my time and energy trying to make it to shows and write about them, I have nothing to [...]

Yes, it's a bit odd that the week after I moved to Hoboken, NJ, I had to travel all the way across the country to see Yo La Tengo, a band that is from none other than Hoboken, NJ. But such is the fate of the craziest few weeks I've had in my life, where I sold my house, found a new place in a new city, packed all my stuff, and moved in less than 10 days. Then 5 days later I was on a plane to Los Angeles. Where I got to see Yo La Tengo at the [...]
