Ken Stringfellow at The Drake Underground in Toronto

Ken Stringfellow at The Drake Underground in Toronto Frank Yang It seems ages ago, but early 2002 was still an era where the magazine was still a vital medium for music reviews and general discovery; I still clearly recall a live writeup in issue 49 of The Big Takeover wherein editor Jack Rabid gave Ken Stringfellow a glowing review for a show at New York's Mercury Lounge on September 20, 2001, and how it served as a powerful musical anodyne for those in need of some healing just a week after the World Trade Center attacks. It was [...]

Watch Fred Armisen, Marnie Stern, members of Yo La Tengo & Les Savy Fav cover TLC’s “Waterfalls”

Watch Fred Armisen, Marnie Stern, members of Yo La Tengo & Les Savy Fav cover TLC’s “Waterfalls” Perhaps overjoyed by the news of a forthcoming VH1 biopic , Portlandia star Fred Armisen and a slew of notable guests covered TLC's classic "Waterfalls" during his show last night at NYC's Bowery Ballroom. Armisen was joined by Les Savy Fav's Tim Harrington, Marnie Stern, Yo La Tengo’s James McNew, Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws, Telekinesis’ Michael Lerner, and Sixpence None the Richer’s Leigh Nash (?!). Together, this rag-tag supergroup kept things straightforward, albeit with noticeable blues-funk undertones. Spoiler: Armisen may very well be the best frontman/band leader in the history of popular music. [...]

Today's Hotness: Big Deal, Youth Pictures Of Florence Henderson, The Nimbleines

Today's Hotness: Big Deal, Youth Pictures Of Florence Henderson, The Nimbleines >> [Photo Credit: Malia James] Internationally sourced and London-based indie rock duo Big Deal disclosed earlier this week that it will release a sophomore set, June Gloom , June 4th. Which, you know, thank God it's actually being released in June, because, duh, am I right? If the spelling-challenged preview track "Teradactol" that first appeared online in November is any indication, the new collection promises a new, noisier and louder sound for the heretofore relatively reserved pair of Kacey Underwood and Alice Costello. June Gloom was produced by Rory Attwell, whose credentials include [...]

Live Review: Yo La Tengo at D.C.’s 9:30 Club (2/15)

Live Review: Yo La Tengo at D.C.’s 9:30 Club (2/15) Yo La Tengo' s songs run the gamut, as if Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and James McNew are perpetually fingering through a rock lexicon Rolodex filled with names from the far reaches of (mostly) good taste. With the band, "You Can [sort of] Have it All".  Whether that's a good thing or not is your decision. The general Yo La Tengo live experience reads something like this: bossa nova grinding gears with noisy funk, a Velvet Underground drugged up rock song, then a whisper, then a shriek, then the most spastic guitar playing you have ever witnessed, another whisper, then [...]
