Generation Records had one of the most stacked Record Store Day lineups with performances by Obits (pictured above), The Jay Vons, I Hate Our Freedom and Spa Castles along with DJ Sets from Yo La Tengo (who also performed a song with Obits), Eric Davidson of New Bomb Turks, Tom Scharpling of WFMU's Best Show, Bill Dolan and more. Most people give crap to Monday, and deservedly so. Who wants to go back to work and/or school and mourn the passing of yet another weekend? But when it comes right down to it, Tuesday might just suck more in the long run. At least with Monday, we've all known it sucked since we were kids (thanks Garfield!) Tuesday, on the other hand, is just as bad, yet it perpetuates the myth that being one day closer to Friday is soooo much better. Well, it ain't. So, in a way to win back the day that breaks even [...]

photos by Jason House West Village record store Generation Records celebrated Record Store Day 2011 by releasing two new records (Off! and Bouncing Souls, both "Live At Generation Records"), and with a day full of in-store performances by Obits , I Hate Our Freedom , The Jay Vons , and Spa Castles . There were also DJ Sets from Yo La Tengo , Tom Scharpling (WFMU's Best Show), and Eric Davidson [...]

With Yo La Tengo back on the road spinning their magic wheel it seemed like a good chance to Rewind back to one of their finest records (perhaps their finest?). 'Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-out' was released back in 2000 (title taken from a Sun Ra quote??). It was brimming with heartache as much as it was filled with chunks of noise and distortion (hear moments within 'Cherry Chapstick'). Yet it was tracks like 'You Can Have it All' that made it pretty clear that the New Jersey band had their reflective hats on - just hear the [...]

Do you remember shuttle runs? They were the single most unpleasant fitness exercise I ever remember being forced to do, and I was quite fit as a young 'un. Anyhow, today I am charging back and forth from Carluke, where we are getting some mastering done for the label, to the house, to the printers to collect some promo material, to the house to get them couriered down to London and then back to Carluke once more. I don't know if I'll need a pint or a nap more desperately by the time all this shit is done. [...]

In an age of bleeding edge , split-second cooler then you, bands blow up and burn out before you even knew who they were and had a chance to love/hate them. Blogging is not the lone gunman for this environment of near zero point, dubious obsolescence of new music . The villain/hero of this story, to a larger degree, is the ability/desire to have every bit of raw information lubelessly jammed into our every greedy orifice at 18g speeds before it happens while we are 5000 ft below the Atlantic ocean or on the surface of Mars. This call and response for omniscience has irreversibly changed the face of music. [...]

It's no secret that we here around HT HQ have been giddy with anticipation to hear Move Like This , the first album of new material in over two decades from influential New Wave act The Cars . While it seemed unlikely that that band was going to play any live dates, especially after Ric told Rolling Stone that he was "leery of touring," last week the reunited act announced that they would in fact be heading out together in support of the new record. [...]

SB has already noted the rich and surprisingly varied career of Yo La Tengo , a band that keeps getting better with every chance they take. At the same time, there's a lot to like in their juvenilia, when it seemed they would fit neatly into the indie boxes that their influences telegraphed. Here's one such early gem that will jangle around your head for longer than you'd expect. Yo La Tengo - Fog Over Frisco

Yo La Tengo during Chanukah 2010 ( more by Chris Gersbeck ) Yo La Tengo have scheduled a new round of dates, and they aren't Jewish holiday-themed benefit shows or to raise money for Japan , but they will, like the upcoming Elvis Costello shows , contain a special aspect. The band writes: "For our ...[ upcoming ] tour dates, we've decided to take the advice of Blood, Sweat & Tears to "ride a painted pony/let the spinning wheel spin." And just in [...]

Yo La Tengo have announced some additional 'Spinning Wheel' tour dates . Most of which will take place in either the UK (actually 'Reinventing The Wheel' tour dates) or Midwest.

Waddupwiddit? Been oot and aboot frozen in carbonite(seriously Wisconsin winters are as fun as reading drunk) for a hot second but I figgered it was high time the Wiz dropped a mix tape. A little bit more then a lot jazzed to be back in the coop! At least until INS tracks me down... hahaha but seriously... shhh! mums the word aye?.. er I mean.. ok? I am not even going to banter about the state of the world atm since I last was here, but basically I wouldn't be surprised to hear invisible C.H.U.D.S have over run [...]
Yo La Tengo reenacting Seinfeld episodes has proved so successful that they'll continue to do so into the summer. The Hoboken, NJ-based indie rockers have just added another batch of "Spinning Wheel" tour date, beginning with two shows in Brooklyn on May 10th and 11th. The formula remains the same: the band will determine the first-half of their 90-minute set via a giant spinning wheel, with possible outcomes ranging from acting out a classic sitcom to playing songs that only begin with the letter "s." The second half with then feature songs of [...]
Yo La Tengo head the list of new additions to this June's Forbidden Fruit festival, taking place at the Irish Museum Of Modern Art over the bank holiday weekend. All the latest names will appear on the Saturday, with the New Jersey trio and The Phoenix Foundation, as well as Irish acts Spies, Bipolar Empire, Kid Karate and Bitches With Wolves joining the likes of The Flaming Lips and Aphex Twin on the bill. Early bird tickets are now sold out, but regular day and weekend tickets are still available.

Frank Yang This show was a week ago; I think this may actually be my longest delay between witness and writeup ever and, in fact, Jeff Tweedy's solo tour is just about over. So if you were waiting on some kind of report from opening night at Toronto's Queen Elizabeth Theatre to decide if it was worth picking up one of the few remaining tickets for a later date... I'm sorry. Sorry that you would allow anything I say or do to influence your decision-making - you know I'm drunk most of the time, [...]
As far as star-studded tributes go, the March 26th concert in honor of Big Star arguably shines as the biggest and the brightest. Featuring the likes of Mike Mills and Michael Stipe of R.E.M., The dB's Chris Stamey, members of Yo La Tengo and Teenage Fanclub, Matthew Sweet, Matt McMichaels, and surviving Big Star drummer Jody Stephens, the event at NYC's Baruch College celebrated the music of the band's "lost" album, Third . If doubters or curious fans needed proof said concert was going to be memorable, then check out the clip [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Daniel Coston On Saturday, an esteemed gathering of musical stars -- among them R.E.M. 's Michael Stipe and Mike Mills , Matthew Sweet , Yo La Tengo 's Ira Kaplan and Tift Merritt -- paid tribute to influential '70s power-pop band Big Star through a performance of the group's album, 'Third/Sister Lovers,' in New York City. It was a very poignant [...]

Making its UK debut this summer comes Yo La Tengo's much talked about Reinventing The Wheel Tour. A show of two halves with no support act where anything goes… so long as the wheel has the final say. A single spin of the wheel dictates the first half, guaranteeing it to be unlike any other on the tour. The second half will see Yo La Tengo perform a Yo La Tengo show. Given that they never play the same set twice, that too will be [...]
