It's a Christmas miracle! When the holiday season had begun, the Flaming Lips established a new website dedicated entirely to streaming Lips related Christmas tunes 24 hours a day, from their spacious and haunting version of "Silent Night" to the remotely unheard-of Imagene Peise projects of 2007. It was a pleasant surprise to all Flaming Lips fans when Wayne announced via Twitter that Yoko Ono would be joining them in the studio to rerecord vocals for the Imagene Peise tune "Atlas Eets Christmas." But the real icing on the cake was another edition to the Flaming [...]
You all know and love the Flaming Lips. From their strange album titles to their weird psychedelic tunes, to the whole gummy skull thing , Wayne Coyne and Co. never fail to fall on the bizarre side of things. The band's annual New Year's Eve Freak Outs, held in Oklahoma City, are legendary and the most recent event (No. 5) featured performances from Sean Lennon, Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band. Not to be outdone, the Lips served up some tasty covers of Beatles tunes, including this version of "I Want You [...]

The Flaming Lips had many collaborations throughout 2011, but one of the most interesting was their collaboration with Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band in the form of a four-track limited edition EP, which was limited to 2,000 copies that were pressed on glow in the dark vinyl. Hear all four songs from this unlikely collaboration.

Psych-rock kings the Flaming Lips did a shit-ton of collaborating in 2011, releasing EPs with Neon Indian, Prefuse 73, and Lightning Bolt. And they ended their year with another one, releasing an extremely limited-edition extended-player with a group of fellow experimental explorers, Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band. The group only pressed up 2000 copies of the EP, selling them all at their Oklahoma City New Year's Eve show, which the Plastic Ono band opened. But thanks to the magic of the internet, we can still hear all four songs from the EP. Stream them below. Read More...

Much of my 2011 was dedicated to travelling to various locations around the world and seeing as much music as I could. As a result, I saw a lot of music, and tried to write about as much of it as possible, but of course a number of great shows fell through the cracks for various reasons - laziness, distraction, or simply not knowing what to say at the time. The end of the year is a perfect time to revisit some of the "ones that got away." Now their stories can be told ... Hazel Dickens, March [...]

Forty years ago, John Lennon and Yoko Ono released their Christmas song, "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)." It was originally a protest song but has now become a holiday classic. Ono is celebrating the anniversary with a website where you can download posters like the one above, and spread the message of peace this holiday season. War Is Over (If You Want It) website YouTube: War Is Over (If You Want It)/"Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" [...]

I love the Flaming Lips despite the many weird things that they do – musically and professionally. However, I can't get behind their recent decision to work with the vocally challenged Yoko Ono, even if it's just one song. And it's a Christmas song, no less!
