Over the years, I have hear a lot of people talk mad shit about Yoko Ono; whether it be about her breaking up The Beatles or making intolerable music. When she announced her dates at the Orpheum, I was slightly interested in seeing her, but had written them off due to Tom Petty being in town. Yoko Ono and John's record label are not letting the occasion pass quietly, as they are using the date to promote a series of reissues and repackagings of Lennon's post-Beatles music. No surprise about more overpriced Lennon tat emerging - limited edition models of Lennon's Imagine guitar coming from Gibson. What's interesting, though, is that Gibson have announced that it wasn't their idea: Gibson Acoustic's director of sales and marketing, Robi Johns, said Yoko Ono asked the company to release a limited number of the model of guitar that her husband played. I thought this was Jay-Z! What are these zero's?! Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band performed at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles on the first October evening. Ono, Sean Lennon, and the 'Plastic' band performed and hosted acts by numerous guest stars which appeared for a multitude of songs, a-la a hip-hop show with constant "surprise!" guest rappers. Iggy Pop, RZA, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Perry Farrell, Carrie Fisher, The Tune-Yards, Harper Simon, Vincent Gallo, and Haruomi Hosono were the accorded invitees of the show. The Plastic Ono Band's two-night stand over the weekend at the Orpheum Theatre was a star-studded spectacle that slithered uneasily between concert, tribute and variety show. People went gaga over guest turns by Lady Gaga (on Saturday) and Iggy Pop (on Friday), but for my money the performance with the most artistic merit was the interpretation of Yoko Ono's "We're All Water" by Merrill Garbus and Tune-Yards.
