Sean Lennon on Singing John's Songs, Making Music and Yoko Ono's Legacy

Sean Lennon on Singing John's Songs, Making Music and Yoko Ono's Legacy Filed under: Exclusive , Q + A The public's first impression of Sean Lennon was as the precocious young progeny of music's most infamous pairing. Two critically acclaimed solo albums and nearly 35 years later, he's given up fighting the inexorably long shadow cast on him by his father , John Lennon -- who would have turned 70 this Saturday, a birthday he shares with [...]

'Woman Is the N----- of the World,' John Lennon: I Freakin' Love This Song

'Woman Is the N----- of the World,' John Lennon: I Freakin' Love This Song Filed under: I Freakin' Love This Song , Guest Blogger Editor's Note: Singer-songwriter Ben Lee has contributed an I Freakin' Love This Song on a John Lennon track in which Lennon employs a racial slur to make a point about the plight of women. Below, Lee performs a video version of the controversial song that also contains the incendiary word, which we deem appropriate to present in this context. ' Woman is the N----- [...]

Ep.406 – Yoko Ono @ The Orpheum Theatre – Los Angeles,CA – 10/01/10

Ep.406 – Yoko Ono @ The Orpheum Theatre – Los Angeles,CA – 10/01/10 Over the years, I have hear a lot of people talk mad shit about Yoko Ono; whether it be about her breaking up The Beatles or making intolerable music. When she announced her dates at the Orpheum, I was slightly interested in seeing her, but had written them off due to Tom Petty being in town. A month or so later, she announced a slew of special guests that would be performing with her (Perry Farrell, Iggy Pop, Sean Lennon, Lady Gaga, Mike Watt, Vincent Gallo and many more). None the less, Petty was still at the top [...]

70 Years Out: John Lennon

70 Years Out: John Lennon On Saturday, John Lennon would have been 70 years old. Yoko Ono and John's record label are not letting the occasion pass quietly, as they are using the date to promote a series of reissues and repackagings of Lennon's post-Beatles music. I suppose if Lennon were still alive, he would be participating in this promo blitz to some degree - after all, he was an instinctively popular artist. Of course, John Lennon was much more than just a pop artist. One of rock and roll's true originals, Lennon was a cultural revolutionary who sought to challenge his audience's [...]

John Lennon's Life in New York City Featured in New Documentary

John Lennon's Life in New York City Featured in New Documentary Filed under: News , Exclusive , Movies In 'LENNONNYC,' a new documentary about John Lennon 's New York City life in the '70s, it's apparent that the former Beatle really felt at home in the Big Apple. For example, there is footage of Lennon and Yoko Ono casually walking outside with no entourage and no paparazzi following them. With the exception of encountering a female autograph seeker, they're pretty much acting like typical New Yorkers. The [...]

Imagine no possessions. Now, imagine those no possesions, but limited edition no possessions

No surprise about more overpriced Lennon tat emerging - limited edition models of Lennon's Imagine guitar coming from Gibson. What's interesting, though, is that Gibson have announced that it wasn't their idea: Gibson Acoustic's director of sales and marketing, Robi Johns, said Yoko Ono asked the company to release a limited number of the model of guitar that her husband played. I don't think I can recall an instance where Yoko's instigation of a tacky cash-in was quite so publicly acknowledged. -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain [...]

Yoko Ono's pièce de résistance at the Orpheum Theatre

Yoko Ono's pièce de résistance at the Orpheum Theatre I thought this was Jay-Z! What are these zero's?! Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band performed at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles on the first October evening. Ono, Sean Lennon, and the 'Plastic' band performed and hosted acts by numerous guest stars which appeared for a multitude of songs, a-la a hip-hop show with constant "surprise!" guest rappers. Iggy Pop, RZA, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Perry Farrell, Carrie Fisher, The Tune-Yards, Harper Simon, Vincent Gallo, and Haruomi Hosono were the accorded invitees of the show. The concert was broken up into two parts: the Plastic [...]

Lady Gaga and Yoko Ono

Lady Gaga and Yoko Ono - The Sun is Down (HD live at the Orpheum Theater 10/2/2010)
[ via ] With Lady Gaga in a glittery, butt-baring catsuit and Yoko Ono sporting a statement hat, the pair performed two songs, backed by a Plastic Ono Band featuring Sean Lennon, Yuka Honda, and Cornelius. Watch the duo take on Plastic Ono Band's "The Sun Is Down" after the jump.

Review: Plastic Ono Band at the Orpheum

Review: Plastic Ono Band at the Orpheum The Plastic Ono Band's two-night stand over the weekend at the Orpheum Theatre was a star-studded spectacle that slithered uneasily between concert, tribute and variety show. People went gaga over guest turns by Lady Gaga (on Saturday) and Iggy Pop (on Friday), but for my money the performance with the most artistic merit was the interpretation of Yoko Ono's "We're All Water" by Merrill Garbus and Tune-Yards. Check out SPIN.com for my review of the proceedings . Photo via imaginepeace.com [...]

Lady Gaga And Yoko Ono Make Some Noise At L.A.'s Orpheum Theatre On Saturday night, hair-raising pop diva Lady Gaga joined Sean Lennon, RZA and Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore in helping Yoko Ono and her Plastic Ono Band celebrate what would have been John Lennon's upcoming 70th birthday at Los Angeles' Orpheum Theatre. (Lennon was born on October 9, 1940). Gaga and Yoko took to the stage and performed a set of songs for an audience of Beatles fans and plain old musical thrillseekers alike. Check out the craziness below! Yoko teaches Lady Gaga how to properly sing the blues—by [...]

Neil McCormick is actually sort-of right

Sometimes, we point and snigger at Neil McCormick, the Telegraph's friend of Bono music writer, but he's got a point this morning , listing the churning products of the Lennon Industry: This is the latest offering from a posthumous, multi-million-dollar Lennon industry, partly fuelled by his widow's sometimes suspect desire to keep the flame burning. It has led to such dubious tributes as a TV commercial for the Citroën DS3, a Mont Blanc fountain pen retailing at $27,000, a limited edition Gibson Imagine guitar ($10,748), alongside the usual array of Lennon-branded mugs, clothing, books, calendars, prints and [...]

Potent Quotables: John Lennon 2.0

Potent Quotables: John Lennon 2.0 Filed under: Potent Quotables "I think he would have been very interested in playing [on] the computer because he always jumped on some new media and that is a very interesting new media." -- Yoko Ono on John Lennon During an interview on 'The Andrew Marr Show,' Ono claimed that her late husband would have been a fan of the internet.
