Last summer Northwest String Summit headliners Yonder Mountain String Band brought out Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann , who was on hand with 7 Walkers, and famed violinist Darol Anger to jam with them on Shakedown Street at the 2012 edition of the fest. Yonder, Billy and Darol turned in a jamgrass-flavored version of the Dead classic and recently a pro-shot clip of the NWSS Shakedown Street popped up on YouTube. Take a look...
Yonder Mountain String Band is a new breed of Blue Grass! There is Blue Grass, there is Blue Grass fused with Rock, and then there is YMSB rocking it out on all strings! No one goes to a YMSB show to sit on their "grass" (had to fit in a pun.) There are no slow melodies, people come to dance! This was YMSB's first show of a very extensive tour; they were joined by Head For The Hills who I would go out of my way to see again! Such a perfect kick off to their tour! Go to [...]
This past Saturday and Sunday, I made my way to the latest installment of my favorite local festival, the 10th annual McDowell Mountain Music Festival , this year taking place for the first time at Margaret T. Hance Park in downtown Phoenix. To set the scene, the park sits on top of Interstate 10 just north of downtown proper (the aptly named Deck Park Tunnel runs right under it). It’s a nice expanse of green in the midst of the concrete jungle. On the outskirts of the park were a few vacant lots, a fair share of [...]
Yonder Mountain String Band @ The Pageant - March 8 and 9 Words and Photos : Rex Thomson Looking out on a capacity crowd at St.Louis’s venerable music hall The Pageant, the members of Yonder Mountain String Band had to be gratified to see their hard work so well rewarded. It’s said that it’s better to work smart than to work hard, but Yonder took the road less traveled and did both, and it’s gotten them where they are today, playing sold out shows to diehard fans. [...]
We've got some exciting news from our friends at SiriusXM's Jam_ON channel as they've just revealed that they will air live broadcasts of two concerts this weekend. On Saturday night starting at 10PM ET, Jam_ON will simulcast the Bowlive IV finale live from Brooklyn Bowl. For this show, Soulive will be joined by Alecia Chakour, George Porter Jr. and The Shady Horns. Plus, you never know who will turn up. Hidden Track editor-in-chief Scott Bernstein will be a guest on Jam_ON's broadcast. Then, on [...]
Yonder Mountain String Band will play back-to-back shows this weekend at the Pageant (6161 Delmar Boulevard, 314-726-6161). Friday and Saturday's shows both start at 7:30 p.m., and the Deadly Gen... Continue reading "I Have Eight Tickets to Yonder Mountain String Band at the Pageant: Win Them" >
Once again DelFest will return to Cumberland, Maryland over Memorial Day Weekend. The Del McCoury Band will headline and host the four-day festival and they've invited some of the usual suspects like Yonder, The Travelin' McCourys and The Infamous Stringdusters. Event organizers have also scored a surprise in bringing the Trey Anastasio Band to DelFest for two sets. Anastasio is seemingly returning the favor of when the Del McCoury Band played at Phish's Camp Oswego festival in 1999. There's plenty of other HT faves on the [...]
If Kim Deal was simply known as a member of the Pixies , she probably wouldn't have much too complain about, as the band cemented themselves as more of the more influential alt.rock of the last thirty years. But it's Kim's "other" band, The Breeders , that actually brought her mainstream success, thanks to their 1993 release Last Splash , which sold over a million copies and included the breakout single Cannonball. The band's classic line-up of Kim & Kelley Deal, Jim McPherson and Josephine Wiggs have announced that they will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the LP [...]
The Northwest String Summit returns to scenic Horning's Hideout in North Plains, Oregon from July 18 - 21 for what will be the event's 12th year. Event organizers shared a taste of what attendees can expect at the fest with the release of the initial lineup. Yonder Mountain String Band will headline and perform for three nights at NWSS. Also on the bill are David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, Greensky Bluegrass, Keller Williams and Friends, Danny Barnes, Darol Anger, Deadly Gentlemen, Fruition, Shook Twins, Milkdrive, Polecat and Betty [...]
Arizona's own McDowell Mountain Music Festival marks its 10 year anniversary in just a couple of months (March 22-24) with a stellar lineup - arguably the strongest lineup in its decade long run. I've made it very clear over the years that MMMF is hands-down my favorite music event in old AZ. I've attended every one of them since 2007, when I watched in awe as Aaron Neville and his brothers belted out "Tell It Like It Is." From its earlier years at Scottsdale's spacious Westworld complex (2004-2009) to the [...]

While full album shows have become something of the norm in recent years, we haven't seen too many bands outside of My Morning Jacket attempt to do what Deer Tick will do with their upcoming three-night residency at Brooklyn Bowl next month - tackle their entire body of recorded work. Over the course of three Wednesday nights, the raucous bar-rock band will tackle almost all of their studio output - LPs and EPs - in their entirety sans their much-beloved debut War Elephant. The run will kick-off on December 5, with the pairing of Born [...]
HT faves Yonder Mountain String Band have announced a four-night New Year's Run at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado that's set to take place from December 28 - 31. A pre-sale will begin next Wednesday, September 5th, with the general on-sale set to take place Saturday, September 8th. VIP and travel packages, four-show ticket options and more details about the home-state Yonder run will be revealed soon.
The third annual Catskill Chill Music Festival is going down in just a few weeks, September 7th - 9th. Over 40 acts are making the trip to Camp Minglewood in Hancock, New York including Yonder Mountain String Band, Lotus, Conspirator, Soulive, Lettuce, EOTO, Break Science, Zoogma, Rubblebucket and many more! Nestled perfectly in the Catskill Mountains, where the beauty [...]
If you were wondering why Grateful Dead / Furthur bassist Phil Lesh only performed on the first two songs at last night's Move Me Brightly webcast , it's because he had a show of his own at Terrapin Crossroads with jamgrass stalwarts Yonder Mountain String Band . For the first of two sets Yonder took the stage by their lonesomes before Lesh joined them for the majority of the second set. [Photo via Terrapin Crossroads Facebook ] Lesh sat in [...]
Patterson Hood sure likes to keep busy. After releasing albums in back to back years with his full time band the Drive-By Truckers , the front man for the hard touring Southern rock act will release his third solo record Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance on September 11 via ATO Records. Hood, who showcased material from his upcoming album earlier this summer with a handful of dates, will head out with his backing band the Downtown Rumblers for a full-on North American tour this fall. Starting off with an [...]
We've been psyched to see many incredible videos from last weekend's Gathering Of The Vibes have already popped up on the festival's YouTube channel . While Vibes wasn't webcast this year, event organizers had multiple professional cameras on hand and have turned around a handful of performances for our viewing/listening pleasure. We picked our five favorite to share. 1. Zappa Plays Zappa - Camarillo Brillo > Muffin Man Dweezil Zappa and Co. tackle this centerpiece of [...]
Telluride Festival favorite Sam Bush does an all-star, all-bass cover of Spinal Tap's 'Big Bottom'.
For those music fans who are looking to keep their mid-week July 4th festivities going straight through the weekend, the fine folks at Bella Familia have the perfect festival for you. Weekend At Har
I'll keep it short as Brown Bird's set was exactly that. If you haven't heard of the RI/Maine duo, it's about time you put down that Mumford & Sons album and list to what gritty folk rock can really sound like. With David Lamb at acoustic guitar in hand and cellist Morganeve Swain, the band displays passionate and intelligent songs of adventure, tear jerking stories of loss, and psychedelic journeys through the human mind only a seasoned mountain man would understand. With the foot stomping grandeur of Bilgewater from last year's Salt to Salt , the fierce [...]
