Why? has constantly changed their sound and explored new areas. They are now on tour for their new album yet to be released where they are playing small venues and breaking down the performance boundaries. Recently, Ryan of DUDES had a chance to talk to Yoni Wolf about what's been going on in the world of Why? Ryan: In fall you're going to hit the road with new material. What influenced the decision to play smaller, more intimate venues? Yoni: We wanted to get out there and give [...]

telephone jim jesus - "dice raw (feat. yoni wolf & pedestrian)" (download) Somehow this record from one of my best friends and bandmates, Telephone Jim Jesus , has come up twice this week, so I thought I'd post one of my favorite tracks from it. "Dice Raw" features Anticon's Pedestrian and Yoni Wolf of WHY? on vocals, as well as a couple of tasteful "record drop-ins" from myself. I play drums on a few of the songs from [...]

The trio of Cincinnati natives collectively known as WHY? have been cooped up in a Texas studio recording for a new album as well as for some lucky fans . Come September, though, the Wolf brothers Yoni and Josiah along with the multi-talented Doug McDiarmid will stretch their legs on a newly announced tour. The 15-date trek opens in their hometown on September 14th and sees the indie folk-hop group playing some off-the-beaten-path venues, sticking largely to fine arts theaters like Boston's The Paramount and two shows in one night at [...]

Tonight Hop Along will be playing back to back shows inside the intimate chapel of the First Unitarian Church with Why? frontman Yoni Wolf. In fact, she is playing back to back to back shows, with a third show added on Sunday after the first two sold like hot cakes. Frontwoman Frances Quinlan's manic and delicate voice will be especially entrancing in this resonant space. Unfortunately, Hop Along had to cancel their SXSW tour this year due to financial difficulties, but with a new album set to be released by the end of the year, we will [...]

FRIDAY, APRIL 15 Many of The Mountain Goats ' 13 studio albums have specific themes—like The Life Of The World To Come , in which every song is named for a bible verse, and We Shall All Be Healed , which details the lives of meth addicts. Singer-songwriter John Darnielle's most recent record, All Eternals Deck (released last month), has no obvious theme (though there are songs about Judy Garland, Neanderthals, and Goya paintings), but Darnielle has said that the album is tied together by the theme of survival. That would [...]

Tweet Live This Month: April 2011 In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. April has a number of big artists with recent albums coming to town, including Kurt Vile, The Rural Alberta Advantage, and Akron/Family. Meanwhile, some great local artists are either concluding tours (like Papercuts) or kicking them off (like tUnE-yArDs). All told, it's another busy month for rock and [...]

Tweet Yoni Wolf (of WHY?) - "Shoot the Singer (1 Sick Verse)" (Pavement Cover) Yoni Wolf (of WHY?) - "Brook & Waxing" For WHY? 's last two records, 20092s Eskimo Snow and 20082s Alopecia , the band drew from sessions recorded in February 2007. Four years later, what's next for the group? That's a question that might be at least partially answered on Yoni Wolf 's [...]
Almost a year ago to the day, WHY? drummer Josiah Wolf released his debut album through Anticon. Now his older, more familiar sibling is going out on tour by himself. Yoni Wolf frontman of WHY?, is heading out on a handful of U.
If you're familiar with the band WHY? , you'll probably know that the outfit began as a one man show and stayed that way for several years. Before picking up his bandmates for their 2005 album release, WHY? was simply comprised of the Cincinnati-born artist Jonathan "Yoni" Wolf . Six years from bringing on new members to the project and two years after their most recent LP, Eskimo Snow , Wolf is bringing himself back to his roots with a set of solo concerts. The mini-tour itself is more of a short stint than anything, [...]
The trio of Why? is heading back into the studio this May to record their first album since 2009's acclaimed Eskimo Snow . But before they begin working on their fifth project together, frontman Yoni Wolf is heading out for a series of solo jaunts. These will apparently be very intimate performances. And they are set to include Wolf covering some of his favorites and playing sketches of new tracks from his band's forthcoming album. You can also expect to hear some classic Why? tunes in stripped-down form. View the tour dates below. [...]
I hastily cancelled any plans I had for Tuesday 16th as soon as i found out Why? Were rollong into town yet again. Regular readers of this blog will know the band have been featured on these pages more than a fair few times. The band had been outstanding the first time I saw them back in November [...]
Yoni Wolf comes across as a pretty inimitable character on his records. Neurotic, sarcastic and cynical, loving, sweet and innocent, sometimes all in the one song. Wolf began making records under the name of WHY? way back at the beginning of the decade, with his first LP proper Oaklandazulasylum appearing in 2003, and the development of his own unique style has been one of the most interesting musical character arcs of that time. Now on album number four, Eskimo Snow , WHY? are an established five-piece band and a well worn touring unit. After spending [...]

These Hands (acoustic) - Why? Twenty January Something (acoustic) - Why? Against Me (acoustic) [...]

Last week, Stereogum posted a new one from Rogue Wave 's upcoming album Permalight (above album artwork via Spinner ). "Good Morning" is more electronically-oriented than the band's past releases, but there's a familiar infectiousness at work: Rogue Wave - "Good Morning" The Dodos played Letterman on Friday. Dave's introduction is priceless ("Their album is entitled Time to Die . Well, Happy New Year!"), after which the band launches into "Fables": [...]

For a little while I thought there was no chance this album would ever make this list such was the level dissapointment I felt after a first few listens. For most of 2008 and the start of this year I waxed lyrical about Why?'s masterpiece 'Alopecia. With the knowledge that the tracks on 'Eskimo Snow' were recorded [...]
There's a lot contained below the surface of Eskimo Snow and what's underneath is not entirely an uplifting affair. The album, which was released in late September on Anticon Records , is almost completely devoid of the hip-hop sheen that glossed both Elephant Eyelash and Alopecia and what is left settles with much more heft and weight. Much of the the humorous subtext is gone as well, though the wordplay left behind is no less clever. The album [...]
