The Nightcast. Yes, night. I am recording this at about two in the morning for the simple reason that for all I aim to do these once a week, on the weekend, once again it has been just plain impossible to actually get the damn thing done on the weekend just gone, so here I am squeezing it into the ungodly hours of Tuesday night. Well, Wednesday now. And of course I am off to The Great Escape in the morning. Actually, it already is the morning. Oh all right then, by the time this is [...]

Bos Angeles - in the process of looking for a label to put their music out - have dropped new track "Pretend For You" and it would be fair to say it's a bit different from their usual style. continue reading >>

Yoofs , the loveable rogues with upbeat pop songs sounding like they've recorded it on a dictaphone are back with Love At 140 . It's the first track from their upcoming mixtape that has been mixed and mastered by Rich Board of Bos Angeles, and is a perfect lo-fi summer jam. Yoofs - Love At 140 was originally published on The Blue Walrus

Recorded in their ever reliable caravan, "Love At 140" is another new cut from Bournemouth's slacker surf-pop duo Yoofs . continue reading >>

Yoofs ' excellent recent single Hazy Dayz ( mp3 ) is the musical version of how you feel after a balmy summer afternoon and too many beers in the park: hot, woozy, a bit desperate for something, someone, you don't know what. Scroll to Top
Rather than a single coherent post this afternoon, I have a collection of bits and pieces of interesting news all looking for a home, so I reckon one big jumbled post of stuff was probably the way forward. PAWS: First up, that video above is a new song by well-established Toad favourites PAWS. Phil apparently wrote and recorded the song one night when he couldn't sleep, and the footage is all stuff shot in the woods around Tain, where he's from. Apart from the rather scrappy genesis, what I like about the [...]

Bands who write would-be pop songs, but with that lo-fi aesthetic that sound like they recorded the whole thing on a dictaphone have always made me swoon, and Yoofs ( facebook / twitter ) are just such a band. Their carefree songs are full of the exuberance of youth and the lo-fi underproduction will make you nostalgic for a time before people bothered with such things as a recording studio. The Bournemouth-based band were previously known as AC Slater after everyone's favourite muscles in Saved By The Bell, but after the DJ with that name kicked [...]

I'm not surprised that a crop of bands from Bornemouth (sunniest place in the UK!) bring to mind so much sun, shade and relaxation, most notably YOOFS , here with Hazy Dayz . This languid, floating jam is just right for laying on a day bed in a haze. Fact. This little cut is available for the price of just 50p from The Sounds of Sweet Nothing . If you're in Brighton, though, this weekend, YOOFS & YRRS will be at the Green Door Store on [...]

The first of 'Soundcloud session' ran by The Sounds of Sweet Nothing label, sees Bournemouth band Yoofs take centre stage to debut new song "Hazy Dayz". continue reading >>

Check out the shimmering glide pop of Bournemouth's Yoofs . (I would love to know where that name came from). New single, "Hazy Dayz" is drenched in heavy reverb, but the pop melodies still shine brightly and make this a giant of a song. The crunchy guitars perfectly balance the ever-pleasant vocals as they become a lovely dynamic duo. Enjoy. Check out more material from the band, at their bandcamp .

Bleeding Knees Club 1st January A duo make up of two dudes from Australia's Gold Coast, the songs they make are unmistakably brash, but in a playful way, like a hateful puppy http://thepigeonpost.wordpress .com/2011/01/01/bleeding-knees -club/ Hourglass Sea January 4th The work of Dean Bentley, this is a project that sounds like Solar Bears being played on the wrong speed setting, a hyperactive mass of noise that doesn't quite seem certain where it's going. http://thepigeonpost.wordpress .com/2011/01/04/hourglass-sea/ [...]

11.David Thomas Broughton - Ain't Got No Sole The first song we heard from DTB's fantastic album, and perhaps the poppiest of the lot. Catchy, unusual and immensely hummable. 12.Kurt Vile - Baby's Arms Another album from which it is tricky to extricate just one song as a highlight, but for some reason I'm giving this the nod above Jesus Fever or Puppet to the Man . I think it's the most late night and glass of red winey song on the album, but it's close. 13.The [...]

Here's the first installment of the Song, by Toad Festive Fifty for 2011 - a collection of the fifty songs I have been enjoying the most this year. The fifty themselves and the precise order can hardly be described as definitive of course, because you know how fluid things like 'favourite' songs can be, but roughly speaking this is the stuff I have been enjoying the most in 2011. Just as a note, in order to make it a broader representation of the bands I've liked the most, I have made it harder and harder for bands to [...]

One of our bros, Michael James Dent from your future favorite band YOOFS , is doing a really cool project to benefit Cancer Research. He's planning an EP of covers to sell around this holiday season (read: SEASON OF GIVING, y'all, GIVING!) and hopefully you will buy one for a great cause. The first cover is of Real Estates Younger Than Yesterday , and is amazing. Check it out below and I'll keep you updated on where and when you can buy this (sure to be) amazing covers EP and benefit some people who [...]

Yoofs - 12 My friend Mike, from Bournemouth blog This Scene Isn't Dead (who put on Bos Angeles ' first show in the Spring), also has a lo-fi project, by name of Yoofs . They've been turning out some glistening 60s numbers these past few months, enough to have earnt them shows with Real Estate and Spectrals last week. All from the comfort of Bournemouth's famous blackwater caravan, that's some pretty nice work. This latest track, '12', which they wrote and recorded over the weekend, has really won me over. [...]

Myself and Nathan Horror Show Tunes have decided that Kingston-upon-Thames could do with some more gigs, and we've taken the responsibility on ourselves - under the name Zeitgiest ( feel free to go 'like' us on Facebook to be kept up to date with future shows). Our first show will take place in Kingston , at The Cricketer's pub, with Woman's Hour and Yoofs on Wednesday November 16 . Of Woman's Hour, Nathan said: "the bordering-on-tropical [...]

This is called the Changecast because, in an absolutely stunning turn of events, it is not packed full of lo-fi garage rock for a bloody change. Considering the racket you've had to put up with for the last year or so, it seems I have kindly granted you the respite of three songs you'd probably vaguely describe as Americana and a couple which are most unmistakably pop! I know! Get me! Tonight is of course the Rob St. John album launch down at Pilrig St. Paul's in Leith. He will be joined on the bill by Viking Moses, [...]

Hmm, not sure exactly what's going on here, but I like it. Yoofs sent me an email a while back, when they changed their name from... er, whatever it was before. I don't know much about them, apart from a handful of rough songs on their Soundcloud page , but I most certainly like what I've heard so far. It's a little tricky to pin them down though, because through the half a dozen songs or so already out and about on the internet, the core of the band's sound seems to be quite uncertain. [...]

Although we just featured them the other day , I feel really compelled to share the excellent new Yoofs jam that we got in. John Actor Is Monkfish comes to us off their forthcoming EP WE USED 2 BE FUN which will see a November release via the up-and-coming Art Is Hard Records . It's a really refreshing little song that has really pretty melodies and they're covered by tons and tons of glorious noise. I'm [...]

The Bournemouth-based bros in Yoofs debuted a new track online today, the oddly-titled "John Actor is Monkfish", which is rife with a dank, lo-fi punk feel. The kind of track that has enough evident rage contained within it's sadness to make you contrastingly invigorated and bummed out. Check it out below, and more melancholy over at their soundcloud . It's part of a very limited cassette run soon out (Nov 15th) on the South-West Region supremeos - Art is Hard Records STREAM/DOWNLOAD : Yoofs - "John Actor is Monkfish" [...]
