The adrenaline-fueled folk-rock of L.A. quintet Escalator Hill draws as much influence from the big indie collectives of this era as the past's purveyors of Americana. The band's debut collection of sepia-toned meditations and clattering celebrations, "Poplar Hill," was produced by David Newton (The Little Ones, the Henry Clay People, among others) and will be out next month. Escalator Hill — like the Lonely Wild — rose from the ashes of You Me & Iowa , with singer-guitarist Tony Benedetti teaming up with string-playing triple threat Nancy Kuo (violin, viola and cello), guitarist Andrew Schneider [...]

Tweet I think there's something particularly special about music that's really evocative of a time or place. It's why I never grow tired of Guillemots ' "Through The Windowpane" - every time I listen I actually feel like I'm on a train to Brazil, and end up heartbroken in São Paulo. Pretty epic. The Lonely Wild have just the same touch, only in their case it's the Old West they conjure up. Formed by Andrew Carroll and Ryan Ross from the ashes of [...]

Songwriter Andrew Carroll's previous band You Me & Iowa never got the respect it deserved — but to hear his new music, that's the least of the world's problems. Carroll, with former YM&I bandmate Ryan Ross, guitarist Andrew Schneider, singer/keyboardist Jennifer Talesfore and drummer Edward Cerecedes, are now doing business as the Lonely Wild . Later this month, the quintet unveils its first EP, "Dead End," which in five songs of aching Americana takes on politics, poverty and social malaise. While showing Carroll has lost none of his pop chops, "Dead End" (recorded by the band with [...]
It was apparent that the band's sudden break up was an amicable one. On stage the members of You, Me, and Iowa treated the show more like a victory lap than a funeral. Each song was played with the enthusiasm and confidence of a band that had been together long enough to be comfortable in its own skin. The night was bittersweet and everyone in the room knew they were watching a band that was going out at the top of their game.

The quintet You Me & Iowa is retiring. But the news isn't all sad. The band is happy to announce they are giving away their final album Aquarium for free on their website . [A batch of local stuff you should be paying attention to ...] The latest in the (almost) monthly songwriting series from Hello Dragon might be its best yet. "1073 paints a sad little picture from downtown L.A. that will bring a smile to the face of anybody who's surveyed the scene at Bar 107 on any given night. Principals Julie Chadwick and Chris Zerby got an assist on this song from Jeremy Wilkins (programming) and Mike Eisenstein (mixing). ||| Download: [...]

It'll be a bittersweet night Saturday at Spaceland. Local pop quintet You Me & Iowa is splitting up after six years — and releasing their new (and final) album, "Aquarium." "We feel we've reached a point where we need to explore new musical territory that cannot be achieved as the ensemble, You Me & Iowa," says a note from members Tony Benedetti, Andrew Carroll, Tizoc Estrada, Ryan Julio and Ryan Ross on the band's website . They promise their swan song will be "a night to remember." The new album will be distributed free at [...]

File under synchronicity: Over the course of a 24-hour period this week, I was e-mailed, or stumbled upon, three cover songs performed by Los Angeles bands. All are interesting takes on the originals, so I thought I'd share. First, indie-pop quintet You Me & Iowa [pictured] delivering a surprisingly harmonic version of the Troggs' hit "Wild Thing." It makes everything groovy. Meanwhile, via You Ain't no Picasso, Michael Orendy — whom you know as Frankel — has released a gorgeously fragile cover of Nick Drake's "Know." And finally, while wondering what my favorite desert-dwellers Gram [...]

[Blogging may be light the next couple of days as your faithful scribe embarks on a little road trip. I'm pretty distraught over missing tonight's battery of shows too, especially on such a special day — the birthday, as it is, shared by Jack White, Courtney Love and John Tesh.] The "Also I Like to Rock" series continues at the Hammer Museum, and this week's free show is headlined by Everest and Red Cortez [pictured]. ... Excellent local bill at the Silverlake Lounge too, where [...]

[Kylie Minogue celebrates a birthday today, and on a more modest scale I submit to you a celebratory list of fine shows tonight ...] St. Vincent , the nom de tune of Annie Clark, returns to L.A. for a show at the El Rey Theatre behind her new album, "Actor." Should be good: The Times spent some time with her in April when she performed at Hollywood Forever, and some friends aren't reserved in their praise — I mean, "the saint herself?" ... It [...]

Brainy and bouncy, spunky and fun, You, Me & Iowa gyrates kaleidoscopically round Byrne-esque vocals, lyrically packed within a universe of tightly orchestrated, bright instrumental arrangements, cleverly fashioning a polished carnival of tunes. The band's frenetic flair insists that you come over and play. Falling on happy ears in LA, You, Me and Iowa would be a refreshing musical oddity in any scene. The line-up: Tony Benedetti - drums; Andrew Carroll - vocals, guitar; Tizoc Estrada - guitar, glockenspiel; Ryan Julio - bass, vocals, percussion; Ryan Ross - keyboards, trumpet. [...]

[One in a series featuring new sounds from SoCal bands:] Long Beach quartet Parade of Lights — featuring former members of Polus (before drummer Anthony Improgo departed to play with Metro Station) — is readying its debut five-song EP. This early taste from Ryan Daly, Matt Frey, Randy Schulte and Mike Nielsen features a heartsick anthem, sweetly melodic and deftly arranged, the kind of pop-rock for the night after date night. ||| Download: "Cityscape" ||| [...]
You Me & Iowa (Los Angeles, CA) Remember once upon a time when Rock Insider used to do a bunch of fabulous presents shows in LA and NYC every month? We took a hiatus from party throwing last year to focus on our new little label JAXART and several dozen other projects. Well the long break is over!! Rock Insider will be presenting it's first show in over a year at Spaceland on Saturday April 25th with performances from You Me & Iowa , [...]

Spunky, uplifting and fun, You, Me & Iowa presents their music on an artistically sweeping canvas dashed with bright instrumentals and heady lyrical topics. Energetic and distinctive, the group has their own bold, saucy verve which they dish out in a busy style ala Talking Heads. The intro to All In Good Time sets the stage for a good, clean party involving lots of joyful moving about. You, Me & Iowa on Myspace
Black Ships released the gnarly (is it ok to say that?) four-song Low EP earlier this year, and it sounds like a loud and thunderous combination of Coalesce and Killswitch Engage. This is excellent lifting music if you time your rest periods to the breaks. MP3 | Black Ships - These Nights In These Places Low EP You, Me, and Iowa are not from Iowa. They play poppy indie rock that sorta sounds like Aloha playing Jimmy [...]
