Brock Potucek The Young Evils Foreign Spells Previous efforts from Seattle’s the Young Evils—see Enchanted Chapel—have been as sprinkled with sunshine as the Emerald City is with raindrops. But while the four-song Foreign Spells EP features a darker tone and more minor keys, boy-girl harmonies and sparkling pop melodies remain the band’s defining qualities. On “Dead Animals,” the first single, Mackenzie Mercer might be singing “Dead animals/that’s what we’ll become” but the bouncy undercurrent and questioning lilt in her voice communicate she hasn’t given up quite yet, [...]

Father John Misty / photo by Morgen Schuler The time has come for another addition of Friday on My Mind . This is our weekly post where we look at videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News. Fall is the start of a lot of things here in Seattle. We have hope for the Seahawks, the schools open their doors, a ton of new releases come out and the start of 7 solid months of rain and darkness gets started. We thought it [...]

photo by David Estep Photography The Young Evils have a far from evil stage presence, even despite their not always so sunny lyrics. Known instead for their infectious melodies and nearly deadpan male/female vocals, via fronting duo Troy Nelson and Mackenzie Mercer, the Seattle band brought trget="_blank">Bumbershoot Music Lounge a typically youthful energy to the Bumbershoot Music Lounge as they performed songs from their most recent album, Foreign Spells , plus a new song from their forthcoming album, due out in January. If you missed them at the Bumbershoot, [...]

All photos by Dave Lichterman Seattle's The Young Evils excel at creating infectious and darkly-tinged pop music that balances the dichotomy of a singalong chorus with sinister lyrics. Led by singer Mackenzie Mercer and singer/guitarist Troy Nelson, the duo's boy/girl harmonies contain equal amounts of sweetness and sting while the tight punch of the rhythm section propels the pair's musical chemistry into the forefront. The quintet have spent the summer playing West Coast shows in support of their latest EP, Foreign Spells , and as they've traversed the Pacific Coastline (including a stop [...]
