I spent about two hours watching the NFL Draft last night. My beloved Donkeys were slated to pick at 25. They traded that pick, and traded down to 31. The second to last pick of the night, and they traded again. Out of the first round. A total waste of a night, but there are six rounds left, and by all accounts, they're armed with plenty of picks to make some interesting moves. On the bright side, the Nuggets are in the playoff and they got hot at the right time. Gotye [...]
SXSW 2012 - Bands to Watch #2 - Young Galaxy Back in 2007, I was part of a small promotions/online radio/webzine/venue called Little Radio. One of my fondest musical discoveries that year was a new Arts & Crafts band called Young Galaxy . They had reportedly just moved from California to Canada, and the Arts & Crafts roster was the hottest at the time. I think I can remember describing their sound in a review as something like "Laura Branigan meets Slowdive" — sounds awkward right? But if you [...]

I could've made this list twice as long but I capped it at 50. Most of these are actual singles. The rest should be. Beyond the top ten, ordering is fairly arbitrary. Metronomy - The Look ( MP3 | Video ) I first heard this song back in February and I have yet to tire of it. I wish the keyboard solo outro lasted forever. Exlovers - Blowing Kisses ( MP3 | Video ) Rocking shoegaze pop of the highest order. [...]

Once again it's time for our summary of the best music that has been around us during 2011. As always, it's a tricky game to play, some tracks are obvious on the list and some had to be outside the list because there are only 25 tracks listed. But this year we will solve this small dilemma by also giving you a Best Of list in Spotify in a couple of days. But the list below is the real deal, that summarizes my year in music. See you in 2012 again, Happy New Year! #25. Oxford [...]

(photo by cubagallery ) After what felt like an explosion of great albums last year, 2011 seemed a bit less monumental to me. On the plus side though, the shortage of heavy hitters in the indie rock genre did allow ample opportunity for diversification. Looking over the year's best, there's much more representation from music of the electronic, folk, pop, and experimental persuasion than in previous years. Another theme seemed to be awesome sophomore albums with bands like Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Lykke Li, The Antlers, Girls, and Smith Westerns all producing albums that break the sophomore [...]
The race for Vague Space song of the year was incredibly tight between the top four tracks on this chart (which also nicely mirror the top four albums of the year) but alas a decision had to be made and since I fell one way for album, I fell the other way for song so without further ado, here's my favorite track of 2011... 1. "Barnes' Yard" The Rural Alberta Advantage This track was actually also [...]
What more is there to say about Shapeshifting that I haven't already? Any regular reader won't be surprised to Young Galaxy 's latest at the top of this list- to date they've been the most blogged-about artist on Soft Signal. They produce music that I connect with at a very deep level; music that resonates inside and stays with me for weeks, months at a time. It's fitting, then, that Shapeshifting takes the top spot on my list. This is a bold record. It's a risky move for a band to abandon its identity and carve [...]

1. M83 - " Hurry Up We're Dreaming" 2. The War On Drugs - " Slave Ambient " 3. Bon Iver - " Bon Iver " 4. Youth Lagoon - " The Year Of Hibernation " 5. Washed Out - " Within Or Without " [...]

So...I suppose I'm a tad bit late to the year-end-best-of-lists party but oh well. Josh already offered up his favorite tracks in the year-end best-of playlist and, while our lists have a lot of crossover, I thought I'd offer up my favorite 50 tracks from the past year. I've struggled with the idea of trying to put a 'best-of' stamp on anything I listen to based solely on the fact that I'm not all that comfortable with the idea of ranking all the tracks I love. This is more a representation of all my favorite tracks from [...]
