A month ago, Chicago's Young Man released their farewell album, Beyond Was All Around Me , to conclude their creative pop trilogy. After starting off with YouTube covers four years ago, Colin Caulfield has grown into an entire band effort to emulate a stronger creative expression. A sad farewell to see, but those doors will remain open for Caulfield. Watch the video for "In A Sense" taken from Beyond Was All Around Me below.
It looks like we slightly missed the boat posting this one by Minneapolis based five-piece dream-pop outfit Young Man , as it premiered a few weeks ago, but we're happy to bring it to our Ninjas late rather than never. The first single to be taken off of their latest long player, which is the third already in the young band's artistic career, "In a Sense" is a lucid, atmospheric cut laden with front man Colin Caulfield's intimate, but cryptic lyrics. Drawing on analogous influences like Beach House, Deerhunter, Panda Bear and Atlas Sound, it [...]
Maps & Atlases came to town to awe those in attendance with an absurd display of musicianship.
Everybody socialized with the reserved excitement of a freshman orientation. Fun was to be had, sure, but to what degree was the procession supposed to fall backwards in trust. Nobody had an answer in Rickshaw Stop, San Francisco's nook of clamoring dynamite, for what to expect from Maps & Atlases and company. Neither the crowd's [...] The post Show Review: Maps and Atlases, Young Man, Cannons and Clouds at Rickshaw Stop, 4/26/2013 appeared first on Spinning Platters .

Caveman headline Johnny Brenda's tonight in support of their self-titled sophomore effort. The Brooklyn band turned heads with their 20112s CoCo Beware debut, an album that displayed an affinity for theatrical synths and instrumental phrases threaded and revisited throughout the tracks. The four-piece employs that cohesiveness again on the new LP, with guitar riffs in lead single "In ... Continue reading

Plenty of today's artists worship the surreal sound texturing of Bradford Cox (Deerhunter, Atlas Sound) and Panda Bear (Animal Collective), but few do it as religiously as Young Man' s Colin Caulfield. Caulfield began his career performing YouTube covers of those artists' work and his four-year old project, Young Man, is informed by those same sounds and all their accompanying philosophies. For example, the 2009 Atlas Sound track “Walkabout” is a single-verse song about growing up that Cox and Panda Bear co-wrote. It’s a lovely nugget of everything that’s made the pair so successful, but the simplicity of [...]

To call James Blake 's second LP "greatly anticipated" may be a bit of an overstatement, but only because it's been hardly two months that we've even known that a new album would be available some time this year. Despite the short time to process the news, fans certainly were eager to hear what the angelically voiced young songwriter would do. To their delight, the album's first single, "Retrograde," took a rather forward looking view on sounds of the romantic 802s (do I hear a trace of Talk Talk's "It's My Life"?) and 602s soul, as filtered through electronic [...]
