FLR's first single – released on my birthday, no less – is classic indie rock, opening with an easy mix of acoustic and electric guitars and then blossoming into its catchy chorus. <!--[endif]-->Zach Toporek sings with conviction and a refreshing throwback sense of passion – far more Fogerty than his emo contemporaries. The power-pop burst of "Come On The Cross" is tempered by the B-side "Our

Yesterday, the Euphoria of being offered a rare press pass for now sold-out V Festival , Chelmsford lasted roughly twelve minutes, a relatively short period of time for overwhelming happiness I know. The amused, then slightly threatening expression on my wife`s face was the memory jolt I obviously needed, we have a family holiday booked in the South of France. For a split second in between me trying to devise a cunning escape plan and her going all Clint Eastwood on me, wires were well and truly crossed. Anyway, some tracks below for your audio delight. Artists I`ll be [...]

Good news for vinyl lovers. Musician and producer James Tritten of the newly founded Fort Lowell Records kicks off with a single by the Young Mothers , a duo from Tucson, AZ. Songwriter Zachary Bennett Toporek has come up with two pop songs that can stand the test of time. Come On, The Cross is driven by a Pixies styled guitar and vocal parts that explore different tempos. The flip-side Good Swords is slower with Sixties West Coast harmonizing. "Come On, The Cross" [...]

While it seems like everybody is looking for an excuse to celebrate something these days, it's quite refreshing to attend an event that celebrates something that is truly worth celebrating. Ten years of the Toronto Wavelength Music Series is no small feat, and one could even say that it's directly responsible for making the local music scene the thriving beast that it is today. Having exposed the talents of acts like Junior Boys , Cuff The Duke , Meligrove Band and even Feist and Broken Social Scene at a time [...]

Jeremy R. Jansen A birthday party is a bit of an odd time to announce a memorial, but such was the case this past February when, at the end of the successful 9th anniversary bash for Toronto's venerable Wavelength weekly music series, it was announced that the 2010, 10th anniversary shows would also mark the final edition of the showcase... at least in its present form. While the weekly showcases are ending, the Wavelength marque and ethos will continue on via monthly showcases and one-off events, thus ensuring that the stages that gave [...]

Thanks to Amy for pointing out Young Mothers - a music act that hits the sweet spot of some things I love like one-man bands and music dealing with the state of Arizona . Young Mothers, the musical work of Zachary Toporek from Tuscon, is the simple intersection where a moody Elliott Smith guitar crashes into the chipper sounds of a Weezer melody. The guitar pop/rock combination works well on "Transnational", the single from his soon-to-hit-iTunes debut Arts & Crafts (label hint?), but Toporek's nasally voice (e.g. Donovan Woods) on folk-pop [...]
