This week's show featuring the lossless noise pop from San Francisco band Young Prisms, I Don't Get Much from their debut Kanine Records release 'Friends For Now'. Also the spiritualist rework of Matthew Dear's Slowdance by German producer How To Dress Well, and a track from High High's upcoming record due 2011. A submission: we have StaG's beautiful 'Tired', which I describe in full detail on Resonance this week, followed by a reminder of just how incredible Burial is in light of recent album announcements, and closing this week with New Beat from Toro Y Moi's wonderful 'Underneath [...]

I'm pretty proud of the music scene in my adopted home by the Bay. Indeed, San Francisco has consistently maintained a seemingly endless pool of talented young musicians making some of the best, forward-thinking music of their time; we have great studios where bands can record their masterpieces; we have great venues for watching bands [...]

Local Picks is my attempt to cover the enormous amount of music being created in the Bay Area. As Pitchfork has called SF "a location that's quickly threatening to eclipse Brooklyn in the ranks of regional talent", I've got my work cut out for me... Weekend Weekend - Coma Summer by Slumberland Records The introduction to "Coma Summer" is what dreams are made of. A driving drumbeat with [...]
And so it begins. Every year, we bring you our picks for the best of the South By Southwest festival. This year, we will be presenting you with a series containing fifty bands, that will run right up to the beginning of SXSW. We selected bands that we think the average TDOA reader will adore. With each entry, we've listed like-minded bands as a reference point, but we recommend listening to each no matter what. As always, it's difficult to put some of these bands in a neat tidy, descriptive box. Your ears will [...]

Many thing have happened since CMJ, both in my life and the rest of the world, but I guess in the age of the internet the blogs don't wait. That's not going to stop me from sharing some of my CMJ highlights with you. these photos were shot on a diana mini, and there is something special about that...because i've switched to shooting almost exclusively with LC-A+...so these might be the last small square photos for a while. This was the first time I actually did CMJ, and it was a blast...good friends and good times. hanging out [...]

Tweet If you can rationalize heading out to Austin twice in two months, then we advise catching both SxSW and the Austin Psych Fest 4 (April 29-May 1 at the Mexitas Event Center). There's a broad definition of psych music in the bands serving as the main attractions at APF4 this year: The Black Angels, Roky Erickson, Atlas Sound, Crystal Stilts and Black Moth Super Rainbow. The latest round of festival additions included Lumerians , The Soft Moon [...]

[Henry Rollins turned 50 on Sunday, and the party is tonight at Largo ...] Top shows to ponder while you listen to Daniel Lanois' Black Dub at 11:15 on "Morning Becomes Eclectic:" ► Coachella-bound Swedish trio the Radio Dept. , whose 2010 album "Clinging to a Scheme" clung to plenty of indie-pop hearts and who followed it in January by releasing the best-of "Passive-Aggressive: The Singles 2002-2010," play to a sold-out El Rey Theatre. Radio Dept. and Young Prisms at the Crocodile, Seattle | 12 February 2011 As the Radio Dept. left the stage after their main set, I wondered did we really need the band here? Thy had left the stage, but crackling and frayed recorded backing was still blasting from the PA. The song continued to Ebb and flow without the band even there. A minute passed and it peaked and then faded out, and I thought to myself, wow that sounded [...]

Home movies from a family of youthful spectrums? No. Rather a new video from San Fran's own Young Prisms playing their beautiful brand of resounding psych-shoegaze overlayed with prisms and charming but practical special f/x. "Sugar" actually plays more like two songs, halfway through a dreary, jangle-pop drawl the song hits an upbeat and the vocals begin to drown in oceanic reverb - the band's live performance as dichotomous as the song. Directed by Fred Velez and Jared Silbert. Friends For Now is available now through Kanine . previously : [...]
