Today's a long-awaited one. It finally sees the release of The Young Republic's Balletesque. Not that I've been waiting all this time though; I've been lucky enough to had a copy for a while, and long-time readers (are there any of these?) will have heard me enthusing at various points ...

Released 12.10.09 End of the Road records The Young Republic met at music school in Massachusetts; they now reside in Nashville, Tennessee and Balletesque is an amalgamation of classical training and folkloric storytelling. Opener Introduction flows into The Alchemist and is a suitably bombastic beginning for this musical journey; swooping the listener up on the waves of a string crescendo. It is big, and bold and multi-directional; almost like prog, although, thankfully not too much. There is a lot going on in this record: Julian Saporitti's [...]

It was all the way back in February that I first talked about The Young Republic 's new album Balletesque . It's taken a further eight months for the album to be ready for release to the masses, but in an odd sort of way, this could work in it's favour. The album has very much of an autumn feel to it, even if that is difficult to articulate. These are the kind of songs that suit the mood of a chilly room as the light disappears earlier and earlier. There's [...]

As a few of you know, I have a few musical projects that take up a lot of my time, and one of them is the indie-folk band Bro. Stephen which just finished up a month-long tour and which will keep me out of Louisville for quite some time. Now, you will have to excuse the shameful self-promotion because this really isn’t about me. This is about all of the bands that I’ve met and will meet along the way and who you should check out and support in hopes that we can lure a few [...]

From Nashville by way of Boston, The Young Republic visited the Lounge for their fourth session in as many years. Currently signed to Britain’s End Of The Road label, the sextet treated us to a complete set of unreleased material including tracks from their upcoming Balletesque CD, due for an October release. The Berklee College of Music grads honed lead singer Julian Saporiti’s songs in their home studio, and finished recording earlier this year. Relocated to Tennessee for over a year, TYR plays an eclectic mix of pop, rock and folk that creates their [...]

Erin Hill and her Psychedelic Harp w/ The Space Rats CG: Although a New Yorker these days, Erin Hill is originally a Louisville girl and was glad to be back in town with her gang of diverse artists, from JP "Thunderbolt" Patterson originally of seminal NY punk band The Dictators to the gorgeous Meena Cho who Erin met while on tour with Kanye West, and several other incredibly talented artists with side-projects galore. While hip hop wouldn't immediately come to mind with a harpist [...]
While at Forecastle this weekend, I listened in on a radio interview that my friends at WFPK did with The Young Republic . I'd heard their name and some song snippets, but frankly I'd gotten them all jumbled up with the other "republic" bands floating around nowadays. But after hearing frontman Julian Saporiti speak at length about not considering himself an artist (rather just a dude who plays music), how his favorites are all session musicians and how the band has a genuine apprecation for anyone who'll listen, I was hooked. Especially [...]

It's been a while since there's been any Young Republic on here, but that's about to change because they've got a new EP out this week. It's a nice little taster for their new album Balletesque (previously touted on this blog here), previewing three songs plus a couple of extra ...

My showcase pick for Friday is the Great Escape showcase that will be taking place at Maggie Mae's Rooftop. That title may sound like some sort of revoluntionary political movement, but of course regular readers of this blog will know that it's just me getting excited again by new stuff from The Young Republic. This time it's a bit special though, because we're talking about a whole new album. The ...

The Young Republic have been pretty quiet since the release of their debut album a couple of years ago. That record was less of a coherent whole and more of a greatest hits collated from several years of self-recording, so it's actually a miracle it hung together as well as it did, frankly. In the intervening period the band have lost three members, released an EP and fairly comprehensively changed their sound. It's not been a smooth process, honestly. They had already begun to drift away from the whimsical indie-pop which dominated their early sound before the [...]
It's been just a tad over two years since I last wrote about the indie-rocksters called The Young Republic . Over the last four years they've dropped a handful (or more) of excellent EP's and singles and are finally releasing their proper full length debut album Balletesque . Don't let the "Americana" tag fool you; this prolific six piece can do it all; orch-pop, folk-rock, dreamy dark ballads and deep blues. Here's something new from the forthcoming album, and then something a [...]
