I've fallen for drummers, singers, keyboarders and oh-so-many guitarists. But last week, I fell for the first bassist: John Smith. John is from the Canadian trio Young Rival, and the introduction of singer Aron D'Alesio couldn't describe their style any better: they're here to play some rock'n'roll. Raw, energetic, sharp, shredding guitars, giddy riffs, with [...]

Baem!

By Rob Crozier May 23, 2013 Welcome to Brighton and The Great Escape . 3 days, 30 venues, 350 artists. Living locally we knew the venues pretty well but still managed to find new ones to explore and others we would not normally venture into that had been transformed by the festival's presence. Thursday lunchtime saw the festival kick off in bright sunshine, so what better place to start than a dark almost cellar-like venue known as The Haunt? We popped in to the see [...]

"Wherever you hang your pigeon-holing comparison hat, there's no denying that there's something sleek, catchy and stylish about these three Ontario natives. New single 'Two Reasons' (out now on Sonic Unyon) is a taught set of angular melodies, tinged with joyful regret, Sort of like Franz Ferdinand without the smugness. There's an album called 'Stay Young' on the way and it's probably fair to expect the serious business of having fun to loom large on that as well. The 'must see' video is a collaboration between the band and Michigan artist James Kuhn. 'Stay Young' was written and recorded as [...]

Los canadienses Young Rival han publicado esta semana Two Reasons , su nuevo single, y para celebrarlo la formación de power pop está ofreciendo en descarga gratuita Time , otra de sus canciones. Aquí puedes disfrutar de los dos temas.

Frank Yang Who: Young Rival What: Hamilton-based garage-rocking power trio who released their second album Stay Young - always solid advice - last Fall. The first video from it made the inaugural shortlist for the Prism Prize , created to recognize the best music video in Canada. Why: They just showcased their goods last month at Canadian Musicfest , and are now playing this "J.D. Presents" showcase before embarking on a Spring European tour . [...]
Today, dive into videos from Young Rival , Big Deal, The Boxer Rebellion and Choir Of Young Believers . First, watch the most inventive video we've seen all year from Young Rival for their track Two Reasons , which takes face painting to a whole new level (especially the baboon's arse at 26 seconds in). Next we have Big Deal's trippy, surreal road trip for In Your Car , and indie rockers The Boxer Rebellion's stark and emotive film for new track Diamonds , and lastly the orchestral [...]

Introducing Young Rivals. They make music for lazy afternoons and boozy evenings...from the press release its clear that this band is maybe tired of being compared to The Beach Boys, The Beatles and other such guitar wielding counterparts...but their music does demonstrate a youthful exuberance, like the rock and roll of the 602s, a real passion for the guitar. The cheery melodies on Two Reasons really does have something Mcartney/Lennon-esque about it, the swagger of ' Better Things ' screams Jagger and the solo on said track sounds like its blasting from Dave Davie's AC30 amp. Yes its [...]

Frank Yang If you're ever debating what to do on a given evening of either Canadian Musicfest or NXNE , you can always do far worse than to simply post up at either The Horseshoe or Lee's Palace for the entire evening. These Toronto anchors always host a solid bill of bands, both local and international, buzzy and unheralded, covering a swath of genres that will surely have something to delight the ears. Granted, I was there with a more specific mandate than to just take in some music - I wanted to see [...]

Words by Neil Wood Young Rival are a trio from Canada that create surf-ready songs punctuated with hooks, harmonies and sing-along choruses. Two Reasons – their new single set for release on May 6th through Sonic Unyon – is an example of the band’s ability to channel summer into a sub-3 minute pop song as the reverb drenched guitars and Beach Boys style vocals wash you up on a sun-soaked beach for the tracks duration. What’s more; there’s a brilliant video to accompany the track too. [...]
I am going to Toronto for Canadian Music Week / Festival from March 20 to 23 (Leaving on the 24th). So I am going to try and make a list on who to check out for the event. This is for March 22nd. (If I have forgotten someone please make a comment) The Icelandic Airwaves Showcase is happening at the Drake Underground and starts at 7:30pm 12:30pm Folly & The Hunter @ Church of Holy Trinty - 10 Trinty Square [...]

(Noah Pink) Not many people would say that th ey like being summoned for jury duty, but it's a task I take great joy in, especially when it means I get to listen to hours of music (as a member of the Polaris Music Prize) or watch reels of music videos as part of the inaugural Prism Prize from Canada's best music video. Like all good art, music video making has been on an evolutionary track. In its infancy, videos were nothing more than gimmicky, label-driven [...]

Claire Boucher Whereas the Polaris Music Prize already has a seven year track record of honouring the top Canadian album, the Prism Prize is new on the scene - unaffiliated but sharing a similar mandate, but focused on the art of the music video rather than the album. And while some may have assumed the art form was on the decline due to the fact that their traditional medium - broadcast television - no longer plays them, the internet as well as the low cost of entry to powerful high-definition recording equipment [...]

Here’s Motorama ’s brand new video for Calendar standout, and my favorite album track, “Young River”. Calendar is also one my favorite albums of 2012 so this post was a no-brainer. Great pop music from these Russian dynamos.
Nova Scotians Young River have a new video. The clip is for the track "Ultimatum" from their recent self-titled album. Watch it here: Look for the band to make an appearance in Toronto in the near future.

Young Rival have eschewed the current trend of their fellow Canadian countrymen, many of whom find themselves in multi-instrumental ensembles or hard-rocking duos, instead forming a power trio consisting of guitar, bass and drums. They released their full length, Stay Young via hometown label Sonic Unyon this past October. Produced by Jon Drew ( Fucked Up , Tokyo Police Club ), you can easily hear a newfound tightness and confidence compared to their 2010 debut. Each song clocks in at less than 4 minutes, which serves to enhance their easily-digestible, pop sensibility. They’ve [...]

The following are a list of some of my favourite releases from 2012. Although there are twelve albums listed here there were many releases in 2012 that I enjoyed (you can see a more expanded list in this weeks radio program/podcast downloadable below). I have also included my top three EPs and singles from this year too. Top 12 albums of 2012 1. Young Rival – Stay Young [...]
