I know, I know... I have a new favorite band just about every week. Or every DAY lately. But last night I met this band Young Rival *. Let me start at the beginning, shall I? I went to Mercury Lounge to see the always wonderful A Brief Smile . My mandals wearing friend Seth Kallen greeted me in front of the venue, mostly just because the doors weren't open yet, and gave me some popcorn that someone said had drugs in it (this was untrue). A Brief Smile were awesome and their sound [...]
Slide guitar brought a touch of the blues to many of the rock songs it graced in the 1960s, but Beach House more often use the technique to add silvery textures to their languorous dream-pop torch songs. Covering " Master of None ", arguably the defining track from the Baltimore duo's excellent 2006 self-titled debut , Canadian quartet Young Rival bring back some of the Southern twang that will probably be forever associated with slide guitar ever since Duane [...]

Who : Young Rival (formerly The Ride Theory) from Hamilton. What : More new material from this great foursome (only Aron and Noah pictured above) from Hamilton. Many are anticipating the new record from this group which I've heard is ready to hit ears in Sept. Some tourdates into the end of summer including ones with King Kahn and The Shrines. Song : Your Island (via Stereogum ).

In "Eagle On A Pole" Conor Oberst sings "I never could get used to happy sounds," but his new self-titled album is actually plenty full of happy sounds. Take the brief clap-a-long march of "NYC - Gone, Gone." With a title like that you wouldn't be wrong to expect some sort of 9/11 ballad, but the rock 'n' roll Oberst delivers is anything but maudlin. It's not that Conor Oberst is a laugh riot, but it definitely finds Mr. Bright Eyes and his Mystic Valley Band on a road trip and a rambling lyricism less in the realm [...]
In a lot of ways America is becoming more and more like a third world country. For a nation that is supposed to be a leader in technology, democracy, and free-market efficiency, we still handle certain vital institutions with the bumbling ineptitude of a night manager at Kinko's. Take, for example, airport security. I know this old trope has been talked to death, but still. After getting to the airport two hours early, after taking off your shoes, your belt, your watch, after chugging any water you happen to have on you and showing your ID to twelve different senior [...]

I've been rather derelict in my blogging lately- life just hasn't been condusive to a lot of writing. But I've managed to keep up with the mixtapes, and new music. In fact, this week I'm packing in the new stuff. New demo/leaks from Weezer, Coldplay and Oasis... New Fratellis, new pigeon Detectives, and new Futureheads... New artists Collin Herring and David Kitt... as always, download, listen, enjoy, and comment... or don't. Tracklisting: Coldplay - Viva La Vida Collin Herring - Punches [...]
The Good: Track of the Week!!!: Young Jeezy (feat. Kanye West) - "Put On"; It may be a bit repetative. It may be Southern rap to the extreme, which is kind of getting lame. But it's got Kanye, it's got a sick beat, and just try not bopping along with this track. This is sick to the next degree! Grade: A Bun B. (feat. Lil' Wayne) - "Damn I'm Cold"; Oh man this beat is freakin' hot! No really,
A friend sent me this nice little song on AIM today. Young Rival apparently used to be known as The Ride Theory (a band equally as unknown to me), but have switched up their name and just posted this demo to their myspace page. MP3: Young Rival - 4:15 There's a lot rattling around in this song. [...]

dances to Michael Jackson (in this Case Bad - Mowgli Remix ), likes to shake his cardboard head to the funk of Chromeo ( Feist - Sea Lion Chromeo Rmx ) and makes his women shiver with the beautiness of Young Rival - 4:15. please mr. paperman, let us share your towel

We don't know too much about Hamilton, Ontario quartet Young Rival, but "4:15"'s been sounding good on repeat listens, so we wanted to post it. We do know they recorded their forthcoming album with Emery Dobyns, a Grammy winner who's also turned knobs for Antony, Battles, and Patti Smith. Also, they went on tour with the Sadies in Canada last fall and Born Ruffians this spring. Not bad, Young Rival. But whatever, the background's not that important. Just take a listen to "4:15," a smoothly dark, refined Zombies-esque pop with a great guitar sound. That's what hooked us first.
