As we filed in to catch Mississippi-based Young Buffalo at an Austin shot bar, the gentleman next to me leaned over to divulge his excitement about the set. Unsolicited stranger love generally bodes well for new acts, so my enthusiasm jumped from like a 5 to a 7 immediately. Turned out the stranger was actually the band's manager or something, but his predictions proved correct regardless; by the last song, I was pretty close to a 9 (which, to be fair, usually requires a laser light show). I kept thinking about how familiar the band name sounded, and [...]

The Outlaw Roadshow Austin, TX - Saturday 3/17 19 Acts & Completely Free! Confirmed to Play! One of the Best Breakthroughs - There are very few acts I would rather see on our stage in Austin than Oxford, Mississippi's Young Buffalo (Fat Possum) who were one of the hottest sounds [...]
Heycoolkid! 100 Best Songs Of 2011 - (26 - 40) . . 40. Hey Rosetta! - "Bandages" Before saying anything about this song, I fully realize that "Bandages" was not released in 2011. It was though new to me this year and the video they put out over the summer for it really impressed me. [...]

While there were an insane number of great albums released this year, much of the excitement and buzz of new music and artists came instead from EPs. Often released as a precursor to an LP, the extended play (or EP) prepares fans for what they may find on a full length. For many of the releases in 2011, though, the EP was able to stand alone as a full musical composition. With the rise of Foster The People , Gary Clark Jr. , Alabama Shakes , Reptar , and followup releases from Surfer [...]
For anyone that's been to Chicago's Subterranean, they know it's a unique, multi-floor space with a cozy, rectangular wraparound balcony. For anyone that's ever seen Chicago's Bailiff play live, they know that the band's sound is a cyclone of blues and bass that often overwhelms whatever location they play. (more...)
On the night of December 3rd, a group of men stood outside Glasslands for a quick smoke before the show. These men saw me as what Jim described as "galloping" across the empty streets. My urgency was to make an appointment with Young Buffalo . Jim Barrett is one member of this upcoming indie rock duo, along with Ben Yarbrough . They spoke with Earmilk and here is our in depth conversation about the band, inspirations, and life. Download: Young Buffalo - Baby Demons EARMILK: As an [...]

Sometimes, I cruise the internet when I'm jonesin' for new music. Sometimes, you just need something different than that album you've been listening to since you found it in a record bin. When I'm not switching between Fitz & the Tantrums' Pickin' Up the Pieces or the self-titled album from The Head and The Heart, I lurk on Youtube. That is exactly where I happened across Young Buffalo , a duo of twenty-somethings hailing from Oxford, Mississippi. These cats draw influence from diverse sources: from San Francisco garage bands to Bowie, with [...]

Young Buffalo (@youngbuffalo) started the night with a rousing set of power pop tunes. Delivering a collection of songs almost in the style of Brian Jonestown Massacre's standout album, Take It From the Man , they drew from past psychedelic rock 'n' roll and contemporary indie rock influences. They energetically banged out both older tracks and new songs from their recently released EP, Baby Demons , such as standout single "Catapilah", a driving indie rock tune with soaring harmonies and psychedelic reverb on the vocals and guitar. Their live performances are well worth seeing and [...]

Long ago hypeworthy'd and subsequently signed to Cantora Records (MGMT, Francis and the Lights), Oxford, MS natives Young Buffalo have been chugging through the last couple of years, trying to focus their sound in preparation for a debut LP. After I was wowed by a few songs and they started working on their debut EP, they put out a song that showed a direction that I really, really wasn't a fan of (and felt the need to email them my thoughts, whether that was a good decision or not). Now they're back [...]

After releasing the excellent Young Von Prettylips EP earlier this year, Young Buffalo is back with a brand new track to win you over today. The duo has just released a new single that we've got here for you today, titled "Baby Demons." There's a bit of an angular jaunt that kicks off the track, but the distance of the vocals really give this track an old school sort of [...]

One of my favorite releases this year was from a band I was only introduced to this year, Young Buffalo . The trio from Mississippi signed to Fat Possum, toured opening for Arctic Monkeys, and released their phenomenal EP Young Von Prettylips . They were originally scheduled to play CMJ, but one of their members left the band due to his wife having a baby. Imagine my excitement when opening my [...]

24 years ago today, the Earth shook, mountains crumbled, seas swelled, and, as a result, Eric Weiner was born to save us all from mediocre music. Tirelessly taking over car radios, making mix tapes, and sending out hordes of links for new bands, Eric has always done a fantastic job of spreading the word. As a way to say thank you to him, and make sure you've got some great tunes to listen to as well, each person at TWHP has shared a couple of our favorite songs that he's given us this year. Thanks for everything [...]
I owe an apology to everyone for slacking last week and not having a playlist up. I'm now part of the Listen Before You Buy family doing "New Music" posts and this is my first week involved with them it's something I'm excited about. Having never cared about editing or formatting and only about getting [...]
![BROOKLYN WELCOMES YOUNG BUFFALO [BUZZSESSION]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3656902_lg.jpg)
When I got ahold of Young Buffalo's recently released EP, Young Von Prettylips , I knew they were a band I had to film with. Luckily they were down for a session, and we decided to meet and record in Brooklyn's McCarren Park. Something you might not have known about me - I'm a huge fan of the TV show Dexter . So much so that I decided to set this particular Buzzsession in a fashion reminiscent of a blood splatter analysis crime scene on the show [...]

Only We Can Keep You From Harm - Young Buffalo African drum styles, polyrhythms, banging percussion and very complex multi-member harmonies are the characteristics that truly make me stop and listen when I'm searching for new music. With these standards in mind, Young Von Prettylips , the new EP by multi-instrumentalist group Young Buffalo (@youngbuffalo), left me with a huge smile on my face. The whole album is positively drenched in gorgeous harmonies, ridiculously complicated vocal parts, big, deep, pounding drums and jungle rhythms. The feeling of energy that this EP [...]
