Big thanks to the Astro Nautico crew for bringing this young wizard to my attention. Youngteam is a 20 year old producer (and magnificent guitarist) based out of NYC, and offers a dazzling, uniquely crafted mix of eloquent guitar work and ~140 BPM half-time beat engineering. My ears usually tend to err on the side of snappier and punchier vibes, but Youngteam 's atmospheric, spacious, and crystal clear tracks have me deeply embedded in this dude's sound. Check out his bandcamp for a few downloads or check [...]

Youngteam From: Stockholm, Sweden What is it with Scandinavian bands and hazy, shoegazy dream pop? Is it a compulsory part of the national curriculum? Is it up there with maths and science as a key subject on the school syllabus? Are they forced to study the collected works of Ride, My Bloody Valentine and the Brian Jonestown Massacre to graduate in Scandinavian colleges? If so then it's a fair bet that Swedish quartet Youngteam passed with flying colours. [...]

Tweet Even though they've been lauded from wherever you are now, to your antipode, and even though they're from same fair land as I, Mogwai were just never a band I spent much time with. Maybe in my formative years as a teenager I was more concerned with Blink-182, Bloodhound Gang, and the back catalogue of Kris Kross that I never paid them any time. Since I started this site I've been given more than enough reasons to put in [...]

Aside from having the most epic album name ever post-rock giants Mogwai have really developed into one of those bands that will forever be imprinted as one of the greatest. Consisting of Dominic Aitchison ( Bass ), Stuart Braithwaite ( Guitar, Vocals ), Martin Bulloch ( Drums ), Barry Burn s ( Piano, Guitar, Flute ), and John Cumming ( Guitar, Keys ) the bands seventh [...]

Some bands become so inextricably linked with their city that it's hard to think of one without the other. For instance, The Strokes = New York, Pulp = Sheffield and Mogwai definitely = Glasgow. Despite being a largely instrumental band, they have managed to reference their home city and its culture in their song titles, album art and videos remarkably often. To name but a few examples, there is "George Square Thatcher Death Party", "Glasgow Mega-Snake", "Kappa", "Young Team", the album art pictured above, and so on. Their new video [...]

Let's get one thing out of the way: Mogwai has definitively won the crown for best album title of 2011 with the forthcoming "Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will," due on Sub Pop on February 15, 2011. The album title alludes to a more aggressive Mogwai (one that was sorely missed on 20082s meandering "The Hawk Is Howling"), and they deliver on that promise with "San Pedro," "Hardcore's" second single. "San Pedro" hearkens back to the days of Mogwai's classic "Like Herod" in terms of intensity, but whereas "Like Herod" relied on a slow-build to its eventual [...]

Faunts Feel.Love.Thinking.Of. Friendly Fire Recordings Release Date: 02.17.09 Nearly four years ago now, Edmonton quintet Faunts came out of nowhere with an album of blistering, mercurial post-rock/shoegaze that ranked right up with greats like Young Team and Nowhere , that left pink-pop/noise aficionados slack-jawed and awed in its wake. They'd taken the baton of The Lassie Foundation and sped off at light speed, carrying the same natural influences ( MBV , Hum and Smashing Pumpkins ) towards new sonic vistas that combined their raging-yet-angelic bombast with [...]

yes, i was indeed a long way from home last night when i decided to walk. haven't done that in a while, and this time round, i had mogwai 's debut album young team with me as my companion, at times gently guiding my every step, and at other moments yelling in my ear and grabbing me by the neck, refusing to let go. it's funny how the first taste of the band is read out to you at the start of the opening track, taken from a concert preview someone had written: if someone said [...]
