Filed under: Monthly Mixtape Flickr March is over. The trees are budding early, the flowers are blooming into a bounty of spring colors, Valdimir Putin is the president of Russia again, Rush Limbaugh called a respectable human being a "slut" and the earth ticks ever closer to the end of times. So what better way to await the arrival of the alien drone destroyers than this kick-ass mixtape. After you buy extra water and batteries, unplug [...]

On Valentine's Day, Brooklyn's Your 33 Black Angels returns with their fifth full-length installment of psychedelic rock, Moon and Morning Star . Known for their rowdy live shows, this band of self-described "musical lunatics" can range in size from a core group of eight (with appropriately strange names like S. Sunshine, J. O!, and D. Zots) to "countless others." The organs backing Y33BA's rock and roll texture coupled with singer Josh Westfalt's languid delivery recall the early psych-rock of Roky Erickson and The Seeds. Check out the album's first single, "Patient Love", below. [...]

This evening on the Local Beat we are having another jam-packed show with three hours of local music goodness. One of my favorite bands in the area, Mandolin Orange , is starting off the program at 5 p.m. to chat about their new double album that is being released at Cat's Cradle on Saturday, Sept. 24. The album is entitled Haste Make/Hard Hearted Stranger and was recorded at two different studios in the past year. According to their website , [...]

Its of interest how what used to be easily dismissed as nutcase conspiracy can no longer be written off so easily. How about that missile off California? With absolutely none of that in mind release yourself with "Persistence of Vision" from the forthcoming album, Songs from the Near Bleak Future . http://www.facebook.com/your33 blackangels http://www.myspace.com/your33b lackangels http://www.y33ba.com/

Chicago's own glam rockers the Maybenauts have a special treat for you fine people. The band has released its cover of the 1971 David Bowie single "Moonage Daydream." The song is apparently a VERY popular among Chicago (ahem Local H) artists, but the 'Nauts do it up in style. Singer Leilani Frey belts out the chorus with brutal feminine force and grace. Guitarist Vee Sonnets blasts each guitar solo with keen precision. You can listen to a stream of the cover below, but be sure to get your free track by [...]

Watching a large portion of the world scratching it`s head after learning how all flights through UK airspace were cancelled for a week at the beginning of this month. Financially and emotionally crippling for those desperate to fly, airlines losing millions and our international postal system reduced to a donkey and cart. Iceland, not content with sending us the musically cryptic Bjork and an equally confusing Sigur Ros in past moments of goodwill, obviously a huge volcanic dust cloud was at the top of our wish list that week. The Deer Tracks : Blessed [...]

I found an old iPod while I was at home over the holidays. My favorite playlist was entitled "Blogs," which contained tracks from blogs that I was following at the time: My Old Kentucky Blog, Aquarium Drunkard, I Am Fuel, You Are Friends, Some Velvet Blog, Gorilla Vs. Bear, The Late Greats and Berkeley Place. Good stuff. West Indian Girl - To Die In LA The Black Angels - Black Grease The Ponys - Fall Inn Alela Diane - Pieces Of [...]

As every music loving listmaker knows, December is a month for lists, and my thrill of culling together a year's best predates this here blog by at least a solid 15 years or so. Of course, the year end lists of my 9 year old self would no doubt be a little embarrassing if unearthed these days which makes me glad that the blogging phenomenon didn't happen until I was well into my 30's. Part of the fun that comes with creating such a list is the reworking of said list when something else comes to mind or, better yet, [...]

Despite having basically one of the death-y-est band names around, Your 33 Black Angels' sound falls closer to the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club/Pete Yorn territory. If you dig either of those sounds, Y33BA will likely be right up your alley (I'm looking at you, Kraig). The album, Tales of My Pop/Rock Love Life , is 22 songs long, and is out now. Buy some: iTunes | Amazon Visit them: Official | Myspace Note: Their new album is only [...]

Local garage band Invasions are set to release their debut EP Magic sometime in mid October, but I've been privileged to hear it ahead of time and I've got to say that it's pretty dang good. I saw them perform at Rancho Relaxo a few months ago , and I was entirely blown away by their authentic 60's rock sound, as well as their clear grasp on how to successfully capture an audience and completely put them under your rock 'n roll spell. Besides the obvious 60's bands that they clearly emulate, they also do [...]
Your 33 Black Angels of Brooklyn are putting out a new album on October the 14th. Their last album, Lonely Street , got praise from Rolling Stone , HARP , just to name a few . Unlike the set standard of LPs being 10-14 tracks long, Tales of My Pop-Rock Love (great album name, huh?) is set to be a great 22 tracks. Awesome. I feel let down when my only complaint about a great album is that it's too short. In their own words, they describe Tales of My Pop-Rock [...]

After a day of cross-country driving through the night with the family, I eased into Shirk's studio with my oldest, Teddy, to catch Brooklyn's Your 33 Black Angels lay down a session. I had anticipated hearing mostly tracks off one of our favorites from 2007 Lonely Street . Much to my surprise I was handed their follow up, a 22 song opus titled Tales of My Pop Rock Love Life . The boys fired out three of the new tunes in the studio and one outside on the street which unfortunately didn't [...]

New Yorkers 33 Black Angels have returned with a new record called 'Tales of My Pop-Rock Love Life'. Look out for it on October 14th. David Fricke from Rolling Stone called their last album, 'Lonely Street', "one of the year's treasures." The new album is 22 songs long. The band themselves called it "florid, visionary rock and soul about girls, death violence, daises and true love." They sorta sound like a modern version of Pavement (at least to me.) I dig lead singer Josh Westfal's calm voice directing the mood. This song is pretty mellow and [...]
