Silence is golden. I think that's how the saying goes. Sometimes, I want to shout out at the world but then I catch myself, realizing that silence is probably a better approach. To be silent takes courage and patience. But, in the end it usually pays off. Especially in delicate, emotionally charged circumstances. Silence allows you to catch your breath, to think, and to calculate your next move. It is definitely something that takes some practice and is not always easy to do. For me, learning to be silent at certain times has been a real challenge. But, the times [...]

It's not that uncommon to see a band change its name. Many get to the point where once they start to garner some attention outside of their hometown, they find out there is a band in Latvia that has dibs on their moniker, or there was some obscure 60's one hit wonder whose last remaining member vehemently defends the rights to their former glory. But unless your name is Prince, it's rare to see a band have a name change after seven years and four albums. So I was a bit surprised earlier this week when I got a myspace [...]

Late breaking news... I hate when the news channels say that. I just found out that Your Black Star is playing the Nach Bar tonight at 11 with Parms from Tokyo, Japan. Go see some local and not so local music tonight.

Come to the Nachbar this Saturday for a "surprise" show with Your Black Star and Parms from Tokyo, Japan. You may remember Parms' Satoshi (singer/guitarist) from his band Drumkan who has played Louisville several times in the past. Your Black Star will be playing all new songs from their forthcoming record, Workers , and Parms will be celebrating recording their first full length album at the Funeral Home with Kevin Ratterman . Should be an awesome show in one of our favorite bars. Your Black Star "The Louisville, [...]

Your Black Star - Beasts A few months ago (July to be exact), Your Black Star released their fourth CD, the mini LP Beasts . After the year and a half wait it took between recording and the stateside release of their last album, Sound From The Ground ( reviewed here ), it had to be a relief for them to put out their latest a mere six months after recording it. Musically, the [...]

4th Street Live may suck for music (unless you really dig on some bad 80s stuff). But Every Friday night this November it might not be so bad. Each friday night local bands will be playing for free. This Friday November 2nd features Your Black Star , Follow The Train and The Fervor . Show starts at 7pm. [...]

W hy does so much good heavy-ish rock music seem to come from Lousiville? Perhaps there is something in the water. If there is, you know that the hard rocking trio Your Black Star has been drinking it in huge quantities. Their latest mini-LP called Beasts is full of driving atmospheric rock that isn't afraid to get a little (or really) noisy and way up in your face. Image U2 and The Cult vs. Sareena Maneesh and Mastodon. Beasts is heavy without being metallic and atmospheric without being [...]
I'm moving to Austin in a week! To celebrate the start of my last seven days in East Texas I bring to you a ramble on Your Black Star. I actually did some PR work for the band when I was involved with Riot Act Media, and it just so happens that the nice guys from Kentucky selected my ticket number at a SXSW party that landed me a Rocky Horror Show 3D Picture. In other words, we sort of go way back. Formed in 2001 the trio has seen in a lot of success in [...]

I had intended to get my best of 2006 posts up while I was at my mom's house between Christmas and New Year's. That was silly. One should not try to blog while on vacation. Then I got back into town and have been busy with job stuff, and family stuff, and band stuff, and football stuff. I thought about just abandoning this post, but I'm pretty sure that if you write a music blog, you are required by law to do a post about your favorite albums of the year. So here is mine... better late than never. [...]
Time for the Louisville love. Your Black Star have been causing some waves internationally, but will always be hometown heroes to me. Their new album, Sound from the Ground, comes out tomorrow, but here's a preview. MP3: Your Black Star - Oh Jesus There must be something in the water around here. ...

Your Black Star - Sound From The Ground For Louisville three-piece Your Black Star , today has been a long time coming. After a two year wait, their new album Sound From The Ground is finally available in their own country. It was released in the summer of 2005 to great reviews in Japan, Australia and the UK. After spending the past year touring the far east, then hitting the British Isles with The [...]
So, what the hell is going on with me lately? Updates have been sporadic, I know. I've been a bit overwhelmed the past few weeks for a number of reasons, most of them related to my real job. I really don't anticipate things slowing down at all, but I'm going to just muddle through. Since I'm so behind it's ridiculous, I decided that rather than spend hours and hours trying to catch up, I'd start out by posting a little mix of some great stuff that's found its way into my inbox in the [...]
Comin' atcha first thing every Monday morning, it's The Pony Track, a super-fantastic long distance dedication to BadmintonStamps Collective founding member Aaron "Pony" Child. No fancy links, no clever write-ups, 'cause these awesome songs don't need no splainin'. So c'mon, ride the pony!

Prophet Omega is the DIY-one-man project of Brooklynite Joe Magistro, a man with a beautiful afro who has played drums with the likes of Darlahood, Graham Parker and Kate Pierson of the B-52's (to name a few). It's a unique blend of funk, surf, rock and soul with Magistro performing almost of all the instruments himself, while trying his best at being vocal for the first time. Comparisons are hard for me to come by when listening to these tracks, but " Get By " has a similiarity to a more raw sounding Kenna. At least to [...]

Your Black Star- The Gauze Above the Lights Step back, Interpol and She Wants Revenge. Since you’ve already picked over the bones of Joy Division, Louisville boys Your Black Star are feasting on the carcasses of Echo and the Bunnymen, the Teardrop Explodes and October -era U2. And the pickings are delicious. Songs like “Oh Jesus...†sound like they’re pulled directly from their cherished resting spots between Ultravox and [...]

We're not in Kentucky anymore... oops, sorry, that was Kansas! Anyway, indie rock band Your Black Star wasn't in Kansas either. At least not in the last few years. They took an unusual way for a band by first promoting their material outside their homeland. Extensive touring through Japan, Australia and the UK must have been quite an experience, but now, the band has returned to the US and plans to conquer their own turf by releasing their album, Sounds From The Ground , on October 17th. The friendly [...]

I'll be doing a little guest blogging over at Muzzle of Bees while Ryan is out on the West coast getting some work and play in, so I hope you swing over to check out those posts this weekend and next week as well. In the meantime, let's clear out the inbox a little and see what gems we can find... Music from the Inbox Mark Mallman Between the Devil and Middle C [...]
