**** THIS IS A DRAFT**** 4-21-12 For any one who payed $250+ and endured the blistering heat at Coachella, I have a notion for you. A music festival conveniently located in down town LA that cost $5! Just like it's well-known brethen, Brokechella had multiple stages - well two actually. One located beneath the vaulted ceiling of Studio Six01 and an outdoor stage. The indoor stage featured danceable indie rock. The stand out performance was delivered by INFANTREE, who's frontman, guitarist, and basist worked up a sweat harmonizing together. Performances by Yoya and Das Tapes also stood [...]

There are a handful of unsung geniuses in the L.A. scene right now, but perhaps none more primed to soundtrack romantic CW montages and headline the Hollywood Bowl than yOya. The band's wonderful "Fireworks" video puts a new spin on found footage, pairing new videography with childhood VHS tapes and atomic test footage that dovetails with the track's lyrical bent. Stream/buy their debut album below. Nothing To Die by yOya

If you'll remember, I shared this song earlier in the year and told you to throw it on a mix labeled "SPRINGTIME." Hopefully you took me up on that. Here's the video for this great track as another reminder. MP3: yOya - Fireworks

Lord Huron / all photos by David Greenwald For the last 13 months, I've written a weekly column first for Brand X and currently the Los Angeles Times dubbed L.A. Unheard. The goal is to point out promising new local artists; during a short-lived concert series, we gave them the chance to play some cool shows, too. I've tried very hard to avoid hype and trends and go with my gut, which means the column's probably missed a lot of fresh electro and hip-hop, though we've managed to catch Foster the People, Hanni El Khatib [...]

Another busy Monday ... ► Tift Merritt won plenty of acclaim for last year's "See You on the Moon," her fourth album, and her recent turn in the star-studded Big Star tribute in New York City only polished her resumé. The 36-year-old singer-songwriter nears the end of a long tour with roots rocker Stephen Kellogg tonight at the Bootleg Theater. (It's an early show.) ► Rising indie-rockers Hands headline the RSVP-only It's a School Night at Bardot, but it's the EP release party for [...]

Augmenting acoustic pop music with a beat machine isn't revolutionary these days with the likes of artists such as Ellie Goulding propelling the "folk-tronica" genre. However, L.A. band yOya still writes playful songs of chipper guitar riffs boosted by complex rhythms that tug their whimsical lyrics in memorably pleasant directions. Falsetto harmonies from Alex Pfender and Noah Dietterich, who have been friends since their days in Corvallis, Oreg., before studying music together at USC, highlight the solid balance between their folk-rock roots from the past and urban influences from the metropolis they live in now. Their latest album [...]
