When she’s not playing bass in Yuck, Mariko Doi is busy with her own fuzzed-up ’90s-style project Parakeet. How does it differs from Yuck? Well, it is a much harder sound of wailing guitars and crunchy bass, while Mariko Doi's vocals are a sublime addition. Parakeet's first single 'Tomorrow' is a swirling guitar jam while their latest track, 'Shonen [...]

We've already heard Parakeet tracks like " Tomorrow " and " Paper, Scissors, Stone ," and the latest one is "Shonen Hearts," which turns effects-pedal roar into sugary pop. Listen to it below. Artist : Afghan Whigs, Yuck Venue : Alexandra Palace, London Date : May 27th 2012 Like several other noted alt. rock acts, The Afghan Whigs appeared on the Sub Pop label in the very early ‘90s and were soon claimed by a major. (Oh, that ever elusive Nirvana V.2, when shall your second coming be?) And again, as with many other bands, their major label days were not as rewarding as they might have been. Certainly it wasn’t [...]
Where were you when you found out SpaceGhostPurrp signed to 4AD? What did you tweet? Did you ponder the relative craziness of the label of Tune-Yards putting out an album by a guy with songs titled “Suck A Dick 2012”? Did you wonder how the advance money for 4AD compares to what Purrp could have gotten at a rap label? I’m seriously asking. Because I spent my time wondering what the fuck took so long. For years we’ve watched some of our most artistically vibrant rappers burn off their best shit on free mixtapes they release to MediaFire, with very little [...]
Listen to and download Highlands ' new song "Railroad" below. There's been a resurgence in the last couple of years of the wall-of-noise type of indie-rock that was inescapable in the 90s, perhaps most-notably brought back to life by Yuck and their driving, unforgiving guitars and melodies. California's Highlands may not necessarily being trying to bring that sound back, but they sure as hell have perfected it. "Railroad" has that pounding, swirling, sear that you've come to expect from the [...]
Chicago’s Like Pioneers bring catchy indie-pop melodies with their second album, Oh, Magic.

After taking 2011 by storm (at least in the world of Indiedom), Yuck returns with its newest material in the form of 'Chew.' The band continues its Ode to the Nineties tradition it successfully established last year by including a fair share of fuzz and reverb. Stream 'Chew' in the Soundcloud app below:

Contributed by Erin Shay UK-based foursome Yuck showcased their 2011 debut self-titled album and new single "Chew" during a relaxed late afternoon set at Coachella a few weeks back. The track comes from the band's forthcoming (little known-about) release and is booming and outrageous. Definitely a good sign on the horizon for the endearing young band. In general, Yuck are an extremely likable 90's musical omelet with a drawn out psychedelic vibe and just the right amount of raucousness, distortion and understated [...]

Given and Taken in Ink - April 2012 from gtimusic on 8tracks . April has been a surprisingly good month for music. Moonlight Bride was featured in GTI's March 2012 mix, but "Diego" has been in heavy rotation since then, so I couldn't pass it up here. Likewise, this month also saw Holy Esque release a new single, "Ladybird Love." I'm so glad to feature new music from the always-excellent Yuck and Joe Pug . There's the heartbreaking "Small Hands," by Keaton Henson," and Natureboy's intoxicating "Blow [...]

Wednesday's shows — are we spoiled, or what? ► Tonight is about all things Miike Snow . The Swedish/American indie-pop mind-meld of Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg and Andrew Wyatt is riding high after the late-March release of their second album, the eclectic "Happy to You," and their set Saturday night at Coachella was bonkers. They do the second of two sold-out midweek shows tonight at the El Rey Theatre, supported by Wolf Gang. Meanwhile, Miike Snow's strange video for "The Wave" might pique your interest; it continues a narrative started in the video for [...]
