Let me start by saying nothing in 2011 has come close to the affection I still have for my two favorite records of 2010: The Walkmen's masterful Lisbon and Blake Mills' so-good-why-the-fuck-haven't-y ou-listened-to-it-yet Break Mirrors . But that's not to say 2011 hasn't been a great year in music. In fact, I don't think I've ever discovered so many favorite new bands (Natural Child, Stone Darling, Breakfast In Fur, Marisa Anderson, Mikal Cronin, Bare Wires, Future Islands, Braids, etc.) in a single year. The internet has created so many minute niches catered by small communities, micro DIY labels, [...]

(photo by cubagallery ) These are 50 tracks that defined 2011 for us, presented in highly unscientific ordered list form, with Matt's songs marked with a "-MG" and my choices with a "-TJ" next to them. To better spread the love, there's only one song per artist. Click the links next to the track to download / listen to the song and go to our Spotify Playlist to hear them all. Enjoy y'all! 50. As it turns out, those pesky 2011 rumors that music is dead were greatly exaggerated after all.

So here we go, the top 20 albums of 2011 from Sound of The Overground... Accompanying each entry is a track to listen to a video to watch and a brief, Twitter-friendly pocket review... 20: Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Belong Pocket Review: A big debut to follow up but the fuzzed out shimmering melodies of Pains of Being Pure At [...]

Fuochino. Sono i miei dischi dell'anno. Ah [...]
30- The Black Belles - The Black Belles Jack White acertou a mão. Suas pupilas do The Black Belles , que lançaram recentemente seu debut pela Third Man Records, são provavelmente a melhor aposta do workaholic ex-líder do The White Stripes . Sombrias e delicadas, com um toque de anos 60 ali, outro toque de sanfona aqui, a música feita pelas meninas possui um resultado bastante charmoso, representado com maestria por faixas como Wishing Well e Leave You With a Letter . O trabalho mais impecável [...]

Tweet Listen to The History Of Apple Pie 's new song "Shelf Life" below. With 2011 drawing to a close it's a time when we reflect on the music we've heard so far this year, as well as some of the more unknown music we discovered and were treated to. The History Of Apple Pie are a band whom we covered back in 2010 but have really come into their own in 2011. [...]
Having already revealed Your Top 10 Tracks and Your Top 10 Music Videos , next box to be punched on the Gummys ' advent calendar is the Top 10 New Acts Of 2011 category, and, unlike the Grammys, Stereogum's readers did a nice job of representing 20112s singular breakout artists. And, based on post count, we were pleasantly surprised with who ended up on top. Check out the results after the jump. Read More...

Sure, a top songs list can never not be subjective, but these selections meant the most to us over the year of 2011. The following tracks brought every minute of joy to a new high, and every moment of heartache a bit of solace. These are the songs that kept us writing throughout the year, that brought us out to shows, lead us to meet so many wonderful people, and most importantly soundtracked a year of unforgettable memories. Pending the arrival of any global calamity, looking back at the songs of 2011 only builds our excitement to see what 2012 [...]

So these are not really in any order, in fact you could say they were "OUT OF ORDER!" I found myself listening to an album a lot, then not really listening to it again until I DID listen to it again. Here are the ones I listened to the most, and therefore I guess they are the best of the year, I guess. And again, let me stress that in true non committal Electric Mustache fashion, these are presented not in any specific order, and also with videos instead of album art/mp3s, because video are way way easier. [...]

11. Cold Cave - "Confetti" At one point the Cold Cave record was possibly my favorite of the year. It just got so many things right at the perfect time: we were due for a reexamination of 902s wide-eyed teenage apocalyptic romanticism via some kind of self-conscious, unsubtle goth/industrial/synthpop revival. Heavy monosynth moongazing that's simultaneously tongue-in-cheek hilarious and dead-fucking-serious. I'm not sure everyone got the high-wire act that Cold Cave was going for here. 12. Purity Ring - "Lofticries" This is the track that [...]
1. Coldplay 'Mylo Xyloto' - The happiest these have ever sounded results in yet another remarkable album, inhabited with fervency, bald-faced pop and one typically heartening concept. 2. Beirut 'The Rip Tide' - Stupendous effort from Zach Condon and his reliable trumpet. Rest of world music, over to you. 3. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds 'Noel Gallagher's High [...]

By Alex Brenner Best of 2011 (in no particular order) Well it's been a pretty good year for music I guess. Some real strong releases and of course some real turds, thanks Metallica. So here is my list of what I liked about 2011. 1. Wye Oak - Civilian . This band is phenomenal, live they are amazing. Great songs but also very dynamic and sonically always surprising. I guess a great mix between country and shoegazing [...]

10. Rise Against - Endgame I will always buy any album that Rise Against releases. I can't really say they're breaking any new ground with Endgame, but the ground that they've already broken is so rich in nutrients, that I could survive on it for many years to come. The track I've selected from Endgame is the one that I've listened to over and over. It features some good sampling from the film version of Catch-22. It may be the sampling, in fact, that makes the song for me. So, thanks, Joseph Heller! Rise Against [...]
