Here is how the headlines will remember the week. President of the Catholic League is so fired up at Bowie's "The Next Day" music video that he called the pop star a, "switch-hitting, bisexual, senior citizen", while the media hedgefund-scaled hype surrounding The Great Gatsby redux only further reminds us of our current-crap-economic conditions, that finds Santigold moonlighting on "The Office" along with Clay Aiken and Aaron Rodgers to find "The Next Grea...
It hasn't even been a month since I was last in Knoxville, yet sometimes there's no place quite like home. Yung Life are also from Knoxville and I hadn't heard from them since their self-titled LP dropped last summer. It's always good to hear from home. Yung Life dropped off "Solarbeats" in the inbox this morning, fresh off the presses and brimming with enthusiastic sounds. "Solarbeats" is a downhill roller - once it gets started it gallups, with rolling drums, keys and guitars all a-kilter, breaknecking to it's conclusion with tongue planted firmly in cheek. This track is [...]

Knoxville's Yung Life are in the midst of recording a new album, dropping the new 'Solarbeats' single in the process to tide fans over. Their self-titled debut came out last year, quickly followed by ' Rude Vision '. Up to now we'd labelled them a band who revelled in the sound of the 80s, but there was always more to these guys than some bounded homage to a previous decade. 'Solarbeats', a free download, goes gung-ho for spirit-lifting, semi-tribal exuberance. It absorbs all the energy of Yung Life's [...]

Gabriel White // “What v2.0 Do” Today Amdiscs dropped a new compilation of 71 fresh and exclusive tracks from new and upcoming artists. Among those artists are a few Cactus-Mouth regulars like Honeydrum , NUDITY , DannielRadall , and Horse Head . There is also a new solo track from Gabriel White , who also happens to be the lead vocalist for Yung Life . [...]
Yesterday I taunted Depeche Mode fans and the band's upcoming world tour...perfectly timed a friend texted me last night asking if we should go to the concert together when they hit Copenhagen next year ...now how exactly do one react to that one?...he's a real cool dude and I'm confident that we'll have a great time...but can I seriously go without losing my face?...but then again... Violator WAS a pretty awesome album...and some of the stuff dating back to 80's was pretty [...]

Yung Life - Hiding Girl Honestly, this album just won’t quite. Releases just keep coming and coming, and I’m so glad, because it is honestly one of the best albums of the year for me. Such crazy nostalgia oozing newness. Anthemic choruses, synths so old and new you are simultaneously launched into the past and future. Chill Mega Chill proudly released this bad boy on beautiful purple cassette back in August. Yung Life also just finished a string of CMJ [...]

Michael Avishay of Death Party Recs / Ghost Animal was kind enough to send over all the fixings for the Yung Life release he has coming up. Let's talk about this track "Breaker," an incredibly catchy tune, an incredibly nostalgic tune, but at the same time very fresh. I get (seriously) heavy Flight of the Navigator vibes from this track, the synths are ancient but the recording is crisp. And the harmonies, only something you could create with three brothers. Our bros at Death Party Records are releasing the (royal blue/magenta vinyl) LP version on [...]

Frankly, this first day of CMJ went a billion times better than I expected. What did I expect? To get lost, for sure, having not been in the city that long. To miss half of the bands I'd listed on some meticulous schedule/map scribbled in my notebook the night before. To be drinking far too much. Ok, maybe that did happen. It's one thing I had to learn, I guess: do not say yes to every drink that is handed to you, because people will be handing you PLENTY of them - that's what happens when you run a Marathon [...]

Knoxville based Yung Life dropped Yung Life earlier this year and you would assume the story ended there for them in the Year of the Mayan, 2012. Not so fast, my friend. Lee Corso and Sirens of Decay were excited to discover that they are already working on new material. A new album, even! "Rude Vision" feels good when you hear it. The keys are light, the rhythm is right where it needs to be, and it wouldn't be Yung Life if it wasn't meant to sink into your head and lips. I'm still sad [...]

When we began our Week in Pop column some three years back, the mission statement was both then and now to spotlight the ground shakers from all corners of the globe in the name of recognizing new sound dimensions regardless of representation or label. Since I'm still so ridiculously busy at work (and holiday coming up next week certainly isn't making things better), I've decided for the moment to dive into the pool of recommendations sent my way by the incomparable J.A. And rest assure; it's a well that won't dry out any time soon! Today's pick it this 80's sounding (and the video is quite 80's looking as well) electro pop track Isn't It by US band Yung Life . I'm currently streaming the self-titled debut [...]
The Impermanent 73 is the debut recording from WL , which features members of Blouse and Houndstooth . Death Party Records (home to Surf Club , Prescription Pills , and Yung Life ; run by Michael Avishay of Ghost Animal ) put out this 73 earlier this Summer. The WL sound has been described as "SHOEGAZE DROWNED IN A SEA FLOWERS." I'd say that's pretty apt. This right here is the B-Side. Listen. Downloadable: No Escape (mp3) [...]

Man I have to be the luckiest guy around to have Ryan Radler sending me a mixtape one week and Steph Lund another the very next. I mean, I hear mixtapes all the time, but not once in my online scavenger hunts have I run into such unique tastes and diverse quality. Cheers to the to the best, most eclectic and tasteful, mixtapes in the game. Every time I hear the the latest installment of LMDM it's my new favorite. Steph gets better every time so that makes sense, but Aout 2012 is something special. From top to bottom [...]

This weeks Top 30 sees Belfast quartet Girls Names take the number one position with their dark and lush new single 'A Troubled See' while Baltimore trio Dead Mellotron grab number two with the brilliant 'Making Up' off their new record Glitter. Columbia's cerebral groovers Believers leap into the Top 5 with 'Forward Forward Back while the best of the new entries 'VII Babies' by Montreal indie pop act [...]

I lived in Knoxville for a few years (until last year, actually). My wife is from Knoxville. I don't know how we missed Yung Life, but I definitely need to be smacked around a bit for overlooking them. The internet though...it never fails to find something. So, belatedly, I discovered Yung Life and their latest track "Isn't This". It's got that patented 802s synth sound that's been floating around, with a backbone of rock that makes for an enjoyable listen. "Isn't This" sparkles and pulses - you might find it hits the spot. Check out Yung [...]
