State Bird - The Golden Glowing Mask State Bird are a band from Ohio who make a glorious splash in the same sort of dynamic that Zach Condon's Beirut have been gradually building up. It has the lone ukelele, the marching trumpets and the stirring melodies, but it's also a sound full of of surprises alone the way... You can listen to their Daytrotter session here or pick up their new album Mostly Ghostly here . MySpace [...]
„Boban Markovic Orkestar" oder: Wer schon immer einmal hören wollte, wie der fiktive serbische Großvater eines 20 Jahre alten Zach Condon (Beirut) aus New Mexico klingen würde – wäre er in einer Band gewesen. Beim Pitchfork-Festival sollen die alten Herren übrigens schrecklich abgeräumt haben. Jedenfalls wisst ihr jetzt, wo Zach Condon aka Beirut seinen Most holt... Gone Flying... back on the 19th. Jamie. PLAY: Zach Condon - Venice

2007 was a bit chaotic in terms of new releases, I have to say. The choices of songs was overwhelming to say the least, and I was able to whittle down my "Best of" list to 100 tracks, and from these I narrowed them to the top 20. Happy New Years, y'all! 20. The Wombats - "School Uniforms" / Download A jangly, reminiscent romp through awkward adolescent fantasies and "Superbad" experiences. I wish I had an anthem like this to keep me [...]

I relish compiling lists. So much so that I ended up with a list of 75 songs from this year on a longlist. So for the sake of your attention-span and as recommendation reminders here are my top 25 songs of 2007. I'll talk about the track when it warrants it or if I've talked about it before, I'll be lazy and quote myself. Link to the MP3, stream or video can be found on the title of the song. 25. Modeselektor - Dark Side of the Sun My [...]

During college, like everyone else with and without their mother, I traveled around Europe and spent alot of my parents' dough in order to do so. One of the places I went to was Venice. Unfortunately, I went in March/April, which is the rainy season there. And when I say rain, it was torrents of rain. I only stayed there for three days. It rained constantly in sheets the whole time. I remember the city being a complete blur, a scene behind window glass while it poured outside. Piazza San Marco [...]

A new song has surfaced from ZACH CONDON, the forefront of theskyreport favorite BEIRUT. And solo, it's more of an electro affair. But all glory is not lost, as horns (a signature Beirut sound) deliver a profound punch on the second half of this track. The song, a gorgeous electro refrain titled 'Venice', appears on a new compilation for The Believer (Magazine) , compiled by Pitchfork Media's Brandon Stosuy. The collection also features rare tracks from GRIZZLY BEAR, DEERHUNTER, OF MONTREAL, YACHT, THE BLOW, THE TWILIGHT SAD, SUFJAN STEVENS, EXPLOSIONS IN THE [...]

From a free CD given away with Believer magazine comes this gem of a tune from Beirut's Zach Condon. The downtempo electronic tones may surprise you if you've been enjoying his Balkan ways but Condon has delved into this kind of stuff before as The Real People (see I guess I'm floating for samples) when he was just 15. The guy obviously has talent in spades but you know that already. The next Beirut gig will be in Tripod in Dublin on June 22nd before a Glastonbury appearance. Also featured on the Believer [...]
It's been a good week. So good in fact, we've been graced by indie-scandal on dual fronts, and the brand new June/July Believer magazine & compilation hit the stands. On the Jack-White-Needs-A-Decaf side of the world, we find him verbally assaulting a poor dj-girl who dared to (excitedly) leak Icky Thump to the airwaves: "At 2pm today, during my show, Q101 became the first station in the world to play the new White Stripes album, Icky Thump. It's awesome. It's really, really, unbelievably brilliant [...]

The Believer Magazine's 2007 Music Issue is on stands now, featuring the stellar "Cue the Bugle Turbulent" CD, compiled with care by Brandon Stosuy of Pitchfork / Stereogum fame. The compilation features Grizzly Bear, The Blow, Deerhunter, Of Montreal, and the not-very-Sufjan-like Sufjan Stevens song that Stereogum posted last week, as well as this gem by Beirut 's Zach Condon . I'm not sure if his contribution is a pre-Beirut jam or something new (anyone?), but the electronic flourishes are a good look for Mr. Condon. [...]

"Elephant Gun" from "Lon Gisland EP" 8/10 Zach Condon knows that his audience is still so charmed by "The Gulag Orkestar" that changing things up would not only be unexpected, but it would be disappointing. So he's is doing what any confident twenty-year-old indie troubadour would do in his place: the same thing he's been doing for the last year and damn well, too. "Elephant Gun" is signature Beirut: it kicks off with a churning uke accompanied by Condon's imminent, classic voice and, just before the song's nostalgia becomes almost too much [...]

For your viewing pleasure, a photo montage: A Hawk and A Hacksaw’s Heather Trost and Jeremy Barnes. The great Jeremy Barnes, former Neutral Milk Hotel drummer and the brains behind A Hawk and A Hacksaw. As you can see, he has drumsticks and bells attached to various parts of his body so he can play various instruments with each limb. Beirut’s band consisted of Zach Condon and seven backing members.
