This is one of the last big weeks for shows this year, and the biggest show is Broken Social Scene Wednesday night at Variety Plahouse. Tickets were still available at the time of this post, but I would suspect this will sell out at any moment. Friday has a ton of great concerts, but I highly recommend catching Castanets at The Drunken Unicorn. And while I rarely mention Athens shows in my listings, the Danielson show at the 40 Watt eclipses anything else going on in this state Saturday night. Best [...]
Sleepy Eyes is the first band since Hovercraft that makes me forget I'm seeing an instrumental band, makes me forget I'm seeing a band at all, and transports me somewhere completely else. read more
(Ed's Note: Not much coming through the pipeline this week so I thought I'd do a special edition of some tour EP's I've recently culled together. Hope you enjoy!) Who: The Mountain Goats & Kaki King Title: Black Pear Tree Release Date: available on tour & eMusic Label: Cadmean Dawn Thoughts: For some time John Darnielle has admitted to a loving adoration of Kaki King's music, so to take that

When you're dealing with a genre as intense, technical, and extreme as math rock, sometimes the the only way to get noticed is to be more intense, technical, and extreme then any other band out there. However, guitarist Marnie Stern takes these math rock modes and interprets them with a pop song sensibility. An interesting vocal delivery, odd time signatures, progressive lyrics, and the drumming of Hella's Zach Hill make sure this record complex and catchy. Read more... Who: El Guincho When: December 12th Where: (le) poisson rouge More Dates Thoughts: It was supposed to be a lovely Friday night at the Seaport seeing El Guincho, but word came that the tour had been canceled and the man had returned to Spain. Sigh. This time around he'll play the still new (le) poisson rouge, which is cool and all, but telling me enjoying his music wouldn't have been fun outside

Drums aren't exactly a compositional instrument. So when someone on the level of Zach Hill's percussive expertise steps outside of his comfort zone and starts writing music for everything from guitar to bugle, it's time to sit up and take notice. Having dedicated so much time to the drum, it's to be expected that Zach would view concepts such a melody and chord progression differently than others. Let's just say Zach's approach to songwriting is a lot like his approach to drumming: sporadic, dizzying, blatant, and unrelenting. Read more... [...]
Zach Hill - Stoic Logic It's only appropriate that if one member of a band does a solo record (Spencer Seim of Hella , who recently released sBACH ) the other member(s) should as well. Hence we have drummer extraordinaire Zach Hill (also of Hella) releasing his solo debut. Of course Hill has performed in numerous other bands (Flössin, The Ladies, Nervous Cop, Team Sleep, Goon Moon, Damsel, etc.) and mostly in his regular band, [...]
Leaping and bounding through scuzz coloured mountains Visual artist and champion of the skins, Zach Hill seems to like forcing himself out of static situations. As the previous drummer for Hella , he has rustled up some extra energy in the lower-leg department and taken to making his own schizted-out, flailing electro-limbs, hell-bent music, after his many stints in various bands. Since teaching himself how to drum in 1995, Hill has been part of the Holy Smokes , Nervous Cop , Team Sleep [...]
A lighter release week, but still a few goodies. The new Dragonforce record with the awesome cover is out. B.B. King proves he's still got it with some new material at the young age of 82. Delta Spirit , a personal California favorite of mine, is what I'm looking forward to. And if you're a Johnny Cash collector, the new 2-disc collection of material he did with George Jones should do you good. :: Alias , Resurgam (Anticon) :: [...]

This week on the show, synthesizers smashin' and rock with passion. New York's the Walkmen have just come out with their new album, You & Me . And the band is as colorful and poignant as ever in their music. We've also got some progressive synthesizer rock from O Soundtrack My Heart : the new album from the trio Pivot. We've also got new music from Peter Bjorn and John, Jesu, Man Miracle, and Zach Hill, so jump on these podcasts while they're still hot. The Needle Drop [...]

Pretty light week. Records that came out on 8/12/08: Records I've Heard: Zach Hill : Astrological Straits (Ipecac) – As you've probably noticed, I'm not a big fan of so-called challenging music. The older I get, the more I listen to music that makes me feel good. Zach Hill, however, is one of the exceptions. Better known as the drummer for Hella, his first solo record could be the soundtrack to your descent into drug addiction. [...]

Zach Hill, Astrological Straits (Ipecac, 2008) MP3 : "Dark Art" Question: How many drummers does it take to create an album that sounds like the work of Neil Peart and Mike Patton's impossibly conceived love child if said child was kidnapped and raised in the basement of a reclusive Ornette Coleman fanatic? Answer: One. His name is Zach Hill . Best known for his work with Hella, along with a heaping handful of star-studded projects over the years, [...]
:: Anne McCue , East of Electric (Messenger) :: Ben Weaver , The Axe In the Oak (Bloodshot) :: Bigelf , Cheat the Gallows (Custard) :: Billy Childish , Thatcher's Children (Damaged Goods) :: The Bug , London Zoo (Ninja Tune) :: Clutch , Full Fathom Five (Weathermaker) [...]
Like most drummers, Zach Hill has spent a good portion of his career toiling behind the skins while other folks got to prance around at the stage front, but thanks to his reputation and proven track record as an amazing drummer Hill has progressed to the point where he was able to call on a few friends and his own solo album. Now folks expecting the sound of Hella or something similar to what he
I asked the incredibly talented Chris Pell for some of his awesome illustrations, and lo and behold the astonishing triad he has summoned specially for us as they illuminate these black spaces in all their sublime and twisted glory. The strength of their psychedelic imaginery has dispelled the pseudo-writer's block ...
Zach Hill - Stoic Logic Zach Hill - Street People Hella's music has always been bursting with massive colours and on Zach Hill's new solo outing the splash of purples and greens and yellows and reds is more vibrant than ever. It alternates screams and ruptures with joy, a wacked-out frenzy of percussion and out of kilter vocals and everything; it's everywhere at once, though you wouldn't win any points for guessing that Hill's part in Hella was as their drummer, because Astrological Straits , his new [...]
I'm going to finish my tour coverage up tonight, but for now you can listen to Kebert Xela 's Athfest performance at Southern Shelter . He also has a Mastodon show up from 2003 . Grizzly Bear are debuting a new song on Letterman tonight, so set your DVR. Sunset Rubdown will be at The Earl September 24th. That is the same night as The Mars Volta , so I think I am going to try and catch some of both of [...]
I miss all of the cool videos. Pitchfork posted a shit ton and there's a bunch more from various sources. Instead of embedding all of them into this post and overwhelming everyone's browser, I thought I'd just link them instead. Good? Good. Zach Hill - Dark Art The video for Zach's (from Hella) new solo single, Dark Art, is him running through a suburban neighborhood in corpse paint. Fun stuff. Hella - Try Dis Typical Hella strangeness with a superhero [...]

What would you get if you extracted key members from math rock mega-group, Hella, gave their high-profile drummer the conductor's baton and let him flesh out his ultimate musical fantasies with the likes of Primus' Les Claypool; the Advantage's Robbie Moncrief; Deftones/Team Sleep's Chino Moreno; and The Smell royalty, No Age? If your answer was, "Fuck. A whole lot of noise?" then you're on the right track. Throw in The Flying Luttenbachers's, Jonathan Hicshke; !!!/LCD Soundsystem's Tyler Pope; and the phenomenal Marnie Stern, and more, and you've got the makings of something truly and absolutely fascinating, Pitchfork calling it, [...]
