Zach Hill (from Hella), who seems to start a new project every few weeks or so, has teamed up with Nick Reinhart (from Tera Melos ) to create a new project called Bygones. The pair's debut album, by- will be released by Sargent House on August 4. Check out below for an MP3 from the album, and after the jump for a tracklisting. MP3: Bygones - "Click on That (Smash the Plastic Death)" Tracklist for by- : 01) Cold Reading 02) [...]
Bygones are the guitar-and-drums duo of Zach Hill (Hella, Team Sleep, Marnie Stern) and Nick Reinhart ( Tera Melos ) joining together in one significantly thrashy affair. The guys are set to release their debut disc, by- , on August 4 with an Internet pre-order set to begin July 1. The notably wiry, angular, totally jammed out to shit songs are reminiscent of Hill's era with Hella but are equaled by none. Tracklist: 01 Cold Reading 02 Click On That (Smash The Plastic Death) 03 Not What It Is But What It's [...]

It's been one of those busy Mondays for me, so here's your fashionably late - yet still fresh and juicy, dripping with goodness - MAAAAG MONDAY!!! (I really should write these things beforehand and post them first thing Monday morning, oh well.) I checked out Pivot based on some positive reviews of their album, 'O Soundtrack My Heart'. Most described them as an instrumental band that sounded somewhat like math-rockers, Battles - and being a big Battles fan, I jumped on-board. What I found is a band that while having sections that sound very [...]

Camping in Times Square Colossal clusterfuck hardcore grunge/punk new wave band Bygones is releasing its debut album on June 23. Sargent House , home to These Arms Are Snakes , Maps And Atlases and Tera Melos are releasing the album, titled by- on CD and vinyl. Preorders are available on May 15 from Seargent House's Official Merch Store . Oh, and that is the swoonworthy Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors on the cover (above). The band features [...]

To say Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodriguez Lopez is prolific might be an understatement. Lopez not only writes every note for his primary musical vehicle, Mars Volta, but he also produces and releases countless solo and collaboration albums. Lopez's newest effort, Cryptomnesia , features members from both the Mars Volta and indie noise rockers Hella. While melodically lacking and structurally unsound, the album is a spastic mind bender that ends up a satisfying experience for your red bull induced hyper side once the initial thought of "What the hell is this?" wears off. [...]

If you guessed that I called on my little friend Babelfish for that headline, I'm not going to deny it. While I may a 8th grade Spanish dropout, I know enough to know that, from the title of this band, the Mars Volta/At the Drive-In/solo axeman Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has apparently put together a new group. Joining Omar in El Grupo Nuevo De Omar Rodriguez-Lopez , Zach Hill, Jonathon Hishke, Juan Alderete De La Peña, and Cedric Bixler-Zavala round out his new team and perform the music that he has orchestrated. On May 5, they will be releasing their debut [...]

Scott Herren: Note the sticker obscuring the Apple logo on his laptop. How many people do you know who do that? So, Scott Herren is now releasing music under three monikers: Prefuse 73, Savath Y Savalas and his latest project with Zach Hill, called Diamond Watch Wrists. All three tracks are continuing the Prefuse 73 pattern of straying from his original style to more rock influenced tracks with breathy vocals and mellow beats. Of course, Herren has released plenty of laidback tracks in the past, but he [...]
Diamond Watch Wrists is one part Zach Hill (Hella, Marnie Stern and sometimes L.A. Record illustrator) and one part Guillermo Scott Herren's (Prefuse 73) will be releasing their first album...
My friend and poet extraordinaire Tim Ramick just sent me a link to a post on Rick Moody's blog that mentions him along with a slew of other artists offering a respite from the instant consumption attitude of much of modern art and media. Congratulations to Tim. His work is mammoth. And while Rick's is a very thoughtful post that I'd love to compete with, unfortunately I'm just going to briefly riff on some reactions. First, start this video, watch it for a minute or so and then read the next paragraph... [...]
This same thing (above) happens to me whenever I try to go jogging: spit up blood, face changes colors, start to see flashing lights. And funnily enough this happens whenever I try to use Excel. Huh. Maybe every human experience can be related through a Zach Hill video. Who needs someecards! Zach Hill hits'em drums hard. So much so that he sometimes bloodies his drum heads. Zach Hill is friends with the equally intense Marnie Stern. You figure that when they play together the sheer power of [...]

MySpace Page Holy Smokes is a supergroup which consists of members of Hella, Flying Luttenbachers, Pinback and The Advantage. They were described equally "Voivod if they formed in 20843 and "barefoot shoegazing on a bed of hot coals". So far they produced two records, one of which came out on Suicide Squeeze label and the other [...]

Roseville, California math-rock trio Tera Melos have been quiet these past few months while they were busy searching for a new drummer. Not to mention Nick Reinhart's much talked about side project with Zach Hill . Turns out they were just planning a few more surprises. Luckily, Tera Melos did manage to find their new permanent drummer who goes by the name of John Clardy. Keeping it light while breaking him in, they decided to have some fun and record some covers of an interesting batch [...]

I am terribly sorry for the lack of posts lately, but I have been pretty busy with school and work… things should calm down soon and I can spend more time on thos blog. I recently came across this from various blogs: Flannel Graduate by No Age & Zach Hill. Flannel Graduate was a Japan tour CD-R featuring "three" songs from No Age and Zach Hill. The first two "Murder Burger" and "Crummmy Doug" are just seconds of sound that lead to the finale, "California Bird Dudes". This last track is 20+ minutes of [...]

Castanets I've begun compiling all the albums from this year I have yet to hear, but before I dive into that, I need to address the last few good albums I've already heard. The Castanets ' newest, City Of Refuge , is a weird hodgepodge of electronic bleeps and sounds combined with emotional folk jams. The juxtaposition of seemingly contradictory musical ideas could result in a gimmicky feel in less capable hands, but the original avant-folk record written and recorded by Castanets' Ray Raposa was tweaked with these digital overdubs by such [...]

It's not often when I get to say "man, you have gotta be at the knitting factory tonight," but for the sake of venues knowing what's up tonight is one of those nights. If you make your way out to Hollywood you not only have the chance to see Subtle, but Zach Hill as well and as far as music goes this is like listening to "Flight of the Valkyries" pre-Apocalypse Now. So close ableton, get your ass off your mac, and hop into your car or the worsening public transporation system towards The Knitting Factory. This will be Subtle's [...]
